Hi, I'm a newbie here. My Pathfinder lately has been stalling while driving normally. I pull over then it starts right up. I recently put new plugs and wires on it as well as running Lucas fuel treatment thru one tank of gas. This has just started happening over the last 3 weeks. I don't know if it's a fuel filter or fuel pump or something electronic. I'm not getting any error codes. I'd hate to spend $190 on a fuel pump and not fix it. Do you replace the fuel pump thru an opening in the truck? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

Thanks Animal & Headpeace, I'll give it a try. BTW, if it is the fuel pump can it be replaced from the trunk - if not how? Thanks again!

There's an access panel in the floor of the cargo area for the fuel pump. It's a little toward the pass. side from center and slightly aft of the wheel well center.

BTW, I didn't have any stuttering or other warnings when mine went, it just stopped working.

Thanks to everyone. Now, where is the fuel filter and can a non-techie like me replace or do I need special tools?

screwdriver and a wrench, you can do it, its on the passenger side towards the dash under the hood, its a litlle round canister lookin thing with a hose comin out of the top and bottom, undo your battery to lessen the chance of a spark cuz when you pull those hoses off they will leak some gas, as well as the filter; and you dont want any sparks around that ;)

Hey guys - well, I put in a new Wix fuel filter last night and the problem remains - the engine will shutter and then it dies but starts right back up again. A mechanic friend seems to think it is indeed the fuel pump. Is the fuel pump an external or internal one? I got two prices from O'Reillys auto parts - one was $189 the other was $40. The clerk could not tell from the parts list whether it was internal or external one. Please give me some opinions on what do to next. This is my daughter's car and I'd like to fix it quick but I'd hate to blow $189 plus labor on a fuel pump if that's not the problem.

Thanks

Joe

It's an internal one. www.rockauto.com lists one for about $75 and they have a 30 day return policy. Just match it up to the old one before you install it.

BTW, be prepared to hack at the screws holding the access panel down. The ones on my '87 were so rusted I had to rip the panel out and make a new one. Aside from that it's really not that difficult to replace. If you can change your spark plugs, you can probably change the fuel pump.

Good luck.

JJ - there is one for $74 and one for $154. What is the difference? Do I need the gaskets and strainer etc? Can you point out the p/n's I need? Thanks

The difference? $80?

Seriously, it's most likely the manufacturer. Don't automatically think the higher priced one is better. Some manufacturers charge more for less. Usually the supplier can tell you which one they have had less returns on (speaking from experience).

Before replacing the pump, I'd have a pressure test done. Your problem may be something totally different, like a clogged cat.

If you do need to replace the pump, a new gasket and screen is a good idea. You may be able to flush and reuse the old screen, but they typically don't cost much and the old one may be beyond cleaning.

I had a clogged cat once (before I became a dog-person). ExLax is NOT a good thing to give to a cat. The necessary proximity of the litter pan dramatically decreases while the cat's wandering habit does not. At least now, with my dogs, if one of them has an accident, the other one eats it.

Once again someone has managed to take a completely on topic, and seemingly innocent suggestion/comment, and turn it into something only truly suited to the Post Whore thread!!!!

I laughed my A$$ off though, as I can picture the "proximity" situation with my own cat!

ROFL:

I tried to respond earlier and lost all connection to the site - kept saying the site couldn't be found. It might have been an attempt to censor my comment about a good cat is the one you see on the road in your rear view mirror - guess I should say it then, huh?

LOL if I haven't learned it yet, it's not worth knowing. Keep in mind, I already have 4 years of school under my belt and have a few classes to wrap things up. Maybe it's a land lubber term, as I have never heard of it used anywhere on any of the ships I have been on. Google, here I come.............

OK, I give 88, what the heck is IIRC? I've hear of PSIA, PSIG and one more I can't remember, but never that one. And I'm a friggin engineer. Well not yet, but in a year I will be officialy.

I believe IIRC is a measurement of 88's brain cells. Typically, this number reduces with age and alcohol. :)
