Bubbley11
Lately when going on the freeway, either in fourth or fifth, around 3500 rpms, I get this sound of a turbo? Now I know I don't have a turbo, wish I did. But none the less it is only when under power. I'll let off the gas and the noise will stop but when I push the gas to maintain or accelerate. I get a turbo like whine. The noise doesn't happen when in 1-3 gears only when going high rpms, 50 mph above. Diff? Drive-line? Belts? Slartibartfast
Mine had an RPM-specific whine that turned out to be the timing belt tensioner failing, but that was in any gear including neutral. Maybe it's coming from the trans. How's the fluid look? Do you do the overfill thing?
Kyle94
I have a whine coming from my transfer case/rear end only when im going over 30 can i hear it, and it goes away (or i just can't hear it) when i let off the gas. Mines and auto. But your 5spd tranny could also be a bit worn out and have some noise. Wounld't surprise me.

silverton
Probably the rear differential, does it get louder as you go faster and faster? Granted if you can hear it over the wind noise of driving a truck with the aero of a brick.
Bubbley11
No, it stays about the same noise as I drive down the freeway.
silverton
I remember when I had a bent exhaust tip, basically looked like a pacman, my truck would sound like a hoover vacuum.
Bubbley11
I do have a hole in my muffler that has been getting bigger, maybe it has found the resonance point and whistles?
silverton
I do have a hole in my muffler that has been getting bigger, maybe it has found the resonance point and whistles? More than likely. But I'd get a set of experienced ears in the passenger seat just to be sure.
Bubbley11
We ran down the road, and its hard to determine. My brother and I believe it is coming out of the tran's(loudest right by the stick). And it only happens in fifth. Fourth was just belts fixed that, cause it happened in every gear. So i think my fifth gear is going or the bearing holding it? Have no clue about transmission's's, but thats my thought?
Precise1
Have you 'overfilled' you tranny with 5.1 liters (5.5 quarts) of GL-4 only gear oil as per the TSB? B
Bubbley11
Nope, always let it dribbled out of the hole. Thats when I stop, always done that way, is a wrong?
silverton
There is a Technical Service Bulletin about the five speeds in these trucks needing to be over filled as Precise1 stated. You do this by filling it through the shifter plate on the top of the transmission.
Slartibartfast
My understanding of it is that the fluid level is too low to properly lube some of the bearings, so they wear out faster than they should. Depending on how far gone the bearings are, more fluid might not stop the noise, but it would probably make the bearings last longer. IIRC the later transmissions have the fill plug higher up to fix this.
Bubbley11
Well I guess ill throw some oil in. Edited December 13, 2013 by Bubbley11
Precise1
All of the above is correct. Here is the info Bud... http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/2621-manual-transmission-tsb/ B
Bubbley11
I fear it might be to late, but it has only been around for a small time and I rarely drive in fifth, so I might be in luck. Cant believe I haven't seen that before.
Bubbley11
Is it bad to mix, I have no clue what I put in before but I could just drop 1.5-2qt's of another GL-4 oil.
Kingman
Put it this way... if you don't know what you put in it before and it happens to be GL-5 (likely since GL-4 is so hard to find), its an absolute death sentence for it.
Bubbley11
Im am fairly positive it wasn't GL-5. I haven't opened it since I got it to check everything. I filled it to the level, then capped it and left it since its a manual.
Precise1
Kingman is right, not knowing what is in there from the PO is bad, and mixing is not a good idea either. In the hope of avoiding costly tranny repair, I would drain the oil and replace it with GL-4 or equavalent synthetic, 'overfilling' it as well. At least you will know what is in it and that the level is right, setting a maintenance point as well. B (I do miss my 5 speed...)
gv280z
my guess is a bad 5th gear synchronizer, in which case there's no way I know of to fix other than a tranny rebuild, but you may be able to put a bandaid on it so you can live with it until the entire tranny falls apart, or like you said just stay out of 5th. I also want to say failing throwout bearing but if it were that I think it would be related to every gear.
Bubbley11
Well I picked up a small bottle of GL-4 fluid and am going to try the overfill. If it goes away ill drain the trans and refill it.
Bubbley11
That was quite a job(ended up cutting some stress relieve point as you lift the carpet). I'll have to see how it sounds on the road now.
Precise1
Yes, I did as well. The job isn't hard but it's a bit tight and the right tools help a lot! B
