Michigan Newbie

Hey all - I am picking up a 95 SE Pathfinder tonight. I found many good topics on this forum to look for when I tested the Pathfinder.

 

I found that it is LSD, has the sport package, and that the rear frame is not terribly rusted. There is surface rust on the frame and most of the undercoating is falling into the streets. The body is in great shape. 117K on the clock. The owner said he never had the timing belt changed, so that is #1 on the list along with a fluid change. I need to check the transmission fluid tonight to make sure it isn't burnt. It shifts good, and reverse is strong.

Got it back home, but on the way home the odometer stopped working and the door switch on the driver's side started going flaky. Not sure what is going on with the odometer, but I know it was working for a few miles, then it just stopped. Maybe something to do with the regulator? The fuel gauge and temp gauge works fine. Also noticed the exhaust ticking noise. So a couple more things to do.

Sounds like you found something decent. There are bound to be a few issues but that is inevitable and is probably covered here... :S

 

Not sure what is going on with the odometer, but I know it was working for a few miles, then it just stopped. Maybe something to do with the regulator? The fuel gauge and temp gauge works fine.

Could be the regulator but first just remove the cluster, check the connections and tighten the brass screws (ground points) in the back. If that doesn't work, there are several threads about the regulator but I can't remember the exact solution... :shrug:

Thanks for the welcome. I'll post up some pictures this weekend since it gets dark here too early in the day. The tirefoamcan name is from the cleaner for tires. I happened to have a can sitting on my desk when I needed to change my name.

 

I was reading a couple of threads and saw that the 94/95 has a 100K belt, anyone know why? Did Nissan switch to a rounded tooth design or something? Still planning on changing it this weekend.

 

Plan for the spring is to wire wheel, steel brush the frame to check for weak spots, hopefully not have to do some welding and undercoat the frame. Heard the exhaust ticking last night after it cooled down, also on the list. Probably will do a 2" body lift as well. A guy at work as some free spacers, so why not.

 

It will be nice working on something where I can stick my hand further down than the valve cover.

That might just be the exhaust cooling? Or did you mean when you first started it up after it cooled down?

 

Yes, it nice having a larger engine bay with everything in view(other the the oil filter)

 

Just one thing too add, do change it to a after market tranny cooler and change the filter just for peace of mind if nothing else. Its probly the orignal fluid anyway.

Got the timing belt and all the other stuff changed yesterday. Wasn't too bad of a job. The hardest thing was finding that small hose connecting the t-stat housing to the upper radiator hose housing. The dealer didn't even have the original part, and said it is not made anymore. I ended up finding a similar hose with more than 90* bend, and it seems to be holding. No pics yet, but soon - I promise.

Fixed a small issue with the door ajar and dome lights, which was the rear hatch not seating. There was a thread about putting some washers under the latch, which worked. Still no pics yet, today was the wife's bday.

 

@OldSlowReliable - I'm down in Monroe. Where abouts in mid-Michigan are you?

Lambertville is a favorite town of my wife and I. I have no idea how it got started, but it is now a favorite town.

 

Where do you go wheeling? I know of a few of places that are more dirtbike oriented, but I've heard Bundy Hill is good for 4x4s. I usually go to Silver Lake every year and would do some tooling around there.

 

My Pathfinder has 245/75 15's on them, I would like to put some 31x10.5's on, but it looks like the torsion bars have sagged. The 31's are only about 1.5 inches larger in diameter, and 1" wider, will I need to worry about rubbing?

Some have 31's on them stock. Mine did. Bundy Hill is awesome ( see my signature pic.) It's huge. There is a place off Airport Highway down in Toledo that is kind of fun. I'm in the process of swapping transmissions due to the auto one dying. It will probably be more towards spring, cause it's cold. Rocks and Valleys up by OldSlowReliable is a great place to go too. Good to see another Michigander on here.

You may have to adjust the torsion bars, as well as the steering stops (mine previously had 235/75/15's, and possibly some rubbing depending on the wheels you are using, as I'm fairly certain they used different wheels for the different sized tires.

 

I usually try and make it out to Silver lake, (actually one of my favorite places!) but didn't find the time this year....maybe next summer we could get a local run going! I'm only about 40 minutes away from Rocks and Valleys, in Harrison, so I spend alot of time there as well.

I do have the 235's on now, and the alloy wheels. Did they make the alloys different widths?

 

A friend of mine's Dad has a Geo Tracker modified to run on the dunes. It is setup pretty nice, the original body is gone and there is a custom fabbed orange/black body on the frame now. It usually kicks the ass of the big trucks out there going up the big dunes. Definitely not the real sand rails though. We usually pop the bead on the tires, it has something like 275/285's on it. It is called the "Sand Hog".

 

I've been down to Maumee State Forest on my KLR250 before, which was alot of fun.

Nope, those are the "lego rims" intended for use with 31x10.50x15 tires...they made chrome-style rims that typically held the 235's on em (and are about an inch thinner I believe) and I another type of spoked wheel for the LE that held 31's I think...

And, welcome. This place has been a godsend for me, and I hope you can find whatever info you need. Real cool part - go to the services section of the forums here. That stuff and awesome people, can't beat it with a stick. :)
