WyKi
Well guys what to look for here? I was driving thru traffic and well there was water here and there, it was raining hard, and well huge puddles form, so while driving thru them at slow speeds, the brake and battery lights come on.. any idea as to why this happened? what/where should i look for? thanks. nige
alternator is probably on it's way out
Precise1
X2 Classic symptom.... You can try giving it a shot of WD-40 to see if displacing any water helps. B
sammyb33
Used to happen to me as well, sometimes in deep water crossings my alty and brake lights would flash for a second until the alty spun all the water out, seemed like it just did not like getting wet. Do you happen to have some splash shields removed so the puddle water can splash all over the alternator? If so I would say that is the problem, this may not kill your alty immediately, but it will harm it over time....
WyKi
Sammy: Yes I think I do as it has no splash guards in the wheel wells, and no splash guards under it aswell.. B: I think I will do that but prob. with some CRC 6-56 as that is for Marine use.. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/woeimages/engine/large/543.jpg Edited November 13, 2010 by WyKi
Precise1
That's not exactly the same though. WD-40 has a low flash point (harder to catch on fire) and WD stands for Water Displacement. It's a trick to use on wet electronics to make them work sometimes, especially things like distributors and ignition components. It may help with the alternator and is a cheap, easy attempt. nige
nismojunky suggested I race the engine after going through a muddy puddle one time. It kicked it back to life and it's been ticking ever since. Put a little digital panel voltmeter in your truck. they are under 10 bucks on ebay, and you can wire them to something under the dash. They will tell you when the alternator isn't pulling it's weight.
WyKi
Cool B, didnt know that small WD fact.. now the 40 is weight? or what?
GrimGreg
Did the belt squeal? I've hit puddles and had my lights flash on just for a moment, it's usually from the belt slipping and is just fine afterwards. If they came on and stayed on, the alternator is done. WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement formula #40. Pretty cool name and a handy product, as long as you don't use it as a penetrating oil... It is very light weight, more like water than oil in viscosity. B

Nope, no belt sqealing, just the lights lighted up.... after going out of water the lights turned off...anywho... working with the disk bearings now so i'll be taking care of that later on...
