the 95 to 99 Maxima uses a different engine the VQ30DE, specs below:

VQ30DE

The 3.0 L (2987 cc) VQ30DE has a bore and stroke of 93 mm and 73.3 mm respectively with a compression ratio of 10.0:1. It produces 193 PS (142 kW; 190 hp) to 230 PS (170 kW; 230 hp) @ 6400 rpm and 205 to 217 ft·lbf (278 to 294 N·m) @4400 rpm. The VQ30DE was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list from 1995 through 2001. It is an aluminum open deck block design with microfinished internals and a relatively light weight.

An improved version of the VQ30DE is known by the designation VQ30DE-K. The K designation stands for the Japanese word kaizen which translates to "improvement". The engine was used in the 2000–2001 Nissan Maxima and adds a true dual-runner intake manifold for better high-end performance compared to some earlier Japanese and Middle-East market versions of this engine. The VQ30DEK produces 226 PS (166 kW; 223 hp). The 1995–1999 US spec VQ30DE was equipped with only a single runner intake manifold.

It is fitted to the following vehicles:

* 1995–1999 Nissan Maxima (A32), 192 PS (141 kW; 189 hp) and 205 ft·lbf (278 N·m)

* 2000–2001 Nissan Maxima (A33), 225 PS (165 kW; 222 hp) and 217 ft·lbf (294 N·m); 230 PS (170 kW; 230 hp) for Anniversary Edition SE

pathfinder/truck VG30E specs below:

VG30E

VG30E

The 3.0 L (2960 cc) VG30E produced 153 hp (114 kW) and 182 ft·lbf (247 N·m). Bore is 3.43 in (87 mm) and stroke is 3.27 in (83 mm). In 300ZX form, it produced 160 hp (120 kW) and 173 lb·ft (235 N·m). On April 1987 the "W" series VG30 was released, adding 5 horsepower but leaving torque unchanged. In 1989, the Maxima received the 160 hp (120 kW) rating, but also used a variable intake plenum improving torque to 182 lb·ft (247 N·m) @3200 rpm.

It was used in the following vehicles:

* 1984–1989 Nissan 300ZX/Nissan Fairlady Z (160 hp/165 hp)

* 1984–1994 Nissan Maxima (160 hp)

* 1987–1988 Nissan 200SX SE

* 1990–1992 Infiniti M30/Nissan Leopard

* 1990–1995 Hardbody Truck

* 1990–1995 Nissan Pathfinder/Nissan Terrano

* 1992–1999 Nissan Gloria/Nissan Cedric (179 hp)

* 1992–1998 Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager (modified to become a non-interference design)

The main difference? Easy. The VQ is a all aluminum engine. The VG uses a iron block with aluminum heads.

Or...

The VQ uses a timing chain. VG engines use a timing belt.

Or....

As stated above, the VQ has dual Camshafts. VG uses only 1 per bank.

what else you wanna know??

My friend's '96 Maxima is a VG30DE... :shrug: I thought the VQs weren't put in them until quite a bit later.

I can promise you it is not.. Maxima engines list

89-91 all VG30E

91 - 94 GXE - VG30E

92 - 94 SE VE30DE

95 - 99 VQ30DE

after that I havent paid much attention... I just know those off the top of my head, seeing as how I have owned at least one model of each of the above.

BTW Kingman: On the firewall, righthand side, under the hood, towards the top, is the engine code. It will say VQ30DE on his car.

I'd rather make a vg33de...(if it would fit lol)

IMO the VQ's haven't been out been out long enough to prove their relyabilty and longevity

but the vg's been on wards best 10 engines for over a decade an hell mines been running for 2 decades :)

15 years isn't long enough to get a pretty good idea about a type of motor?? :scratchhead:

Well, what is, then?? Should we all be driving around with air cooled 1600 dual port flat fours?? :lol:

Nothing wrong with those at all, VW should still be making them, better than the 1800 slant fours they went to (though not a "bad" engine, just not as simple).

VQ's opened in the 95 Max with 190 hp. Then bumped to 222 hp in 2000 but still 3.0. Then 240 hp in in 2003 with a displacement increase to 3.5. What was once fun with 190 horses and front wheel drive in 95 was just wrong by 2003 with 240 horses snatching the steering wheel all over the place. The move to a stretched Altima chassis in 2004 killed it for me. I'm leaving the front wheel drive stuff to Honda. Been there done that. Visit my cars of my past link to see how I came full circle from gray ZX to gray Z in 27 years with some Maxima time in the middle.

No where near enough. :lol: Which Pathfinder? WDs 140-153, R50s 173, VQ R50s TWO HUNDRED AND FOURTY FIVE. That's a sh*t load of power for a small and light SUV.

how many horsepower is the pathfinder, though?

Sorry I got off on a ramble. Just meant to respond to the original post and say I've never heard of a 153hp VQ Maxima of any year. I've still got the window sticker to my 95 buried somewhere and it clearly stated 190hp in the standard features section.
