Touring Western US

Hey N, I got the phone message so thanks for the update. WTF?? Tioga Pass is still closed?? :scratchhead: But then a co-workers friend went to Tahoe last weekend and needed chains to cross the pass, actually had to put them on!! This is not normal at this time of year. You have brought the Frozen North down with you. Turn back!! Go away!! :D

I'll be home aboot 4PM tomorrow and looking for you. Just a word of advice, get through the Bay Area before 3pm unless you like traffic...

You'll probably go through Tracy on 580 West. Stay on that until you approach San Francisco and there will be a route North to San Rafael (80??880??) across the Richmond bridge (4$ toll) and merge North on 101. From there it is 40-45 miles...

the US government sees everyone who is not a US citizen as a possible terrorist.

I fixed that for you. The US government is insane. That is all...

hey B, i'm right near the san jose airport, and i'll be heading a bit south to monterey bay to check out the aquarium. rush hour starts early in san fran  but i have to see the city so hopefully it doesn't slow me down too much. I'll call you after i leave the aquarium and also when i get across the bridge. looking forward to cracking a beer with you

Actually it is very easy to get your license and then purchase one. Not worth it to bring it to the US though, as the ATF and State Department are a pain in the ass, and the only way you can bring one down now is to have paperwork from an event in the US stating that you will be attending it. You also have to apply 3 months in advance to the ATF to bring your gun(s) and get authorization for a certain time period when you will be bringing it down. You cannot just bring a gun into the US without a good reason as the US government sees everyone who is not a US citizen as a possible terrorist. As I said before, it is not worth it. Just rent one at the range, or borrow one from a friend while at the range.

Good luck on the trip. Sounds like you are having fun!

 Hope you're having fun though. If you decided to go along the border through Arizona i'd go shooting with you :bounce:

made it to victoria, the pathfinder got strip searched at the border and going out to help my cousin teach some kids about the plants and animals living around their school.

B, thanks again for the hospitality, it was nice to have a break from so much driving. I drank one of those Blue Moon beers yesterday. They taste even better when you're sitting in someones homemade cedar hot tub!

You are welcome N, it was good to meet you. Too bad it was rushed with little sleep, but hey, at least you can relax for a while now. Having a Blue Moon right now myself... :D

Did you get to see some giant trees??

sorry redpath, but i had to make the last ferry out of port angeles for 5:00. i didn't even have time to get up to hurricane pass for a good view and some photos. i am trying to squeeze too much into too little time.

victoria has been pretty nice so far. i've got some kayaking on the bill for tomorrow, and if the weather doesn't cooperate, i', going to the old growth forest for another nature tour. the people i've met in victoria have screwed my head back on in the right direction. i am finally beginning to feel like I know what purpose i'm supposed to fill.

b here's a quick photo of my destination from your house. i'll post one from the good camera when i save it on the laptop

No problem, it was good to meet you. Sorry it was so rushed though, and BSing until 2am probably didn't help either... :D

Glad you made the trip without any real problems.

hahahaha i'm only at the halfway point so far too! I am going to do it again next year, but see some of montana, wyoming, and more of washington this time. not so far south.

i took up packie88's advice and went to zion, n.p. I was pressed for time, so i didn't get to see as much of this place as i really wanted to. It was a really cool park:

yosemite falls. i really like this park and i'll have to fly back and do some backcountry camping next time
