My '90 Jeep Cherokee has AC.

You can look into a small circular window while the AC was on and if you saw

liquid flowing, all was well.

Is this true for a '95 Pathfinder with AC ?

Else how can I know there is enough Freon in the system.

Bought the vehicle used several months ago.

Do HAVE to go to some SHOP and have it done ?

Some of the DIY r134 kits have a guage on them, when you hook it onto the system it will read if you need more, are full, or overfull.

Thats what I was gonna suggest, but then I remembered those are like 30 bucks or more, so if he doesn't need it that's 30 bucks he didn't need to spend.....
