somone, I think on n4w, has done it b4. I'm not sure why but it is possible and if you search there (nissan4wheelers.com) you might find it. I think the 2wd tranny has a differant tail end that won't bolt up the tx-10 t-case and the upper and lower control arms are differant. the 2wd lower ones have "compression rods" that extend to the foward of the vehicle whereas the 4wd lowers have "compression/tension rods"(their function changes based on load) that extend toward the aft of the vehicle. The 4wd oil pan is smaller to clear the front diff and uses a wider water pump but I don't think that will hurt you. those are the biggest differances I know of between the 2wd and 4wd.

The knuckles need swapping, not the suspension. 2WD knuckles have no hole for the CV axle to go through. Otherwise, it's a pretty straight swap job that involves a lot of heavy parts and a lot of time. If you've got time, money and the inclination, you can do it.

2WD's have forward facing compression rods? Wha? I've never seen that before. Pics?

I'm pretty sure they do, Or maybe its only the 2wd HB I'll scan the page in my book if I remember to after work.

It should cost you around $1,500, maybe a couple bucks more if it has low miles and a decent interior.

I'm just saying if you have the space you might consider buying a 4WD Pathfinder and swapping the good bits from yours into it. Or sell yours (unless you've really modified it already) and start with the 4x4 platform. Prolly way easier and more cost effective. Yeah, I think Steevo added an axle to his but then again he makes 4x4 parts, which gives you an idea of his mechanical ability and the kind of tools he must have.

If you really love your particular Pathy, then by all means do the swap. I'm just saying that all the money and effort might be better spent improving a 4x4, not making one.

ok my greasy haynes manual did not scan to well (I'm also lazy & ready 4 bed)but the drawing shows 2wd "tension rods" coming foward from the lca to what looks like a tab near where the front tie down is. and the 4wd "compression rods" coming back form the lca to(doesn't show)... well I know that tab is on the frame just behind the diff x-member. It also shows the T-bar ajusters being differant. but I don't think that will be an issue.

Only the 2wd HB had that "lighter" setup on them. The 2wd Pathfinder just never got any front guts, but the same basic suspension.

ok that explains it. my haynes does HB and Path but in some pics It just says 2wd only or 4wd only, I doesn't state which vehicle.
