89_trailboss
Pretty much the center, as fueler guessed... right where the steering rack mounts... I had no idea I had done anything, but noticed the truck was pulling left hard while the steering wheel was pointing right. I can only guess I dropped the truck on a nice pointy rock right at that point, and it gave. Needless to say I ordered skidplates after replacing that bad boy... (imagine that plastic splash guard didnt save the day!!?!?) I've beaten the hell out of the truck since with no further issues. Looking forward to seeing the build trailboss... Mind if I ask what your estimated budget is for this project? I too have had problems with plastic splash guards. just a few weeks ago I punchered the tank on a 90 XJ. ended up leaving it on the trail for 2 weeks till we had time to go and the snow had melted abit. there isnt a set budget for this. what it takes is what it takes. for the first stage, it would be nice to spend 5000 including purchase cost(which was only $600, but still) have $1700 into it right now. thats for the truck, both D60's and the rear supension. second stage is planed to be gears, rear steer and full hydro steering. sammyb33
ah ok, i can see if you dropped yourself on a rock or some other obstacle. but minimal bracing should be easy and effective, by no means did i mean to leave it alone, but when everyone was saying "oh the sub frame is weak, i just couldn't understand why everyone thought an SAS was not do able.... 89_trailboss
mostly part gathering. have started cutting tho. needed another trail truck to scratch my wheeling itch so I pulled my 91 zuk tracker in the grarage a month ago. just finishing up it up. has a D44 and 8.25 with 3 links front and rear. doubler and 35's. it started as a "get me out on the trails ASAP" thing but now im kinda liking the thing lol. hope to be out on the trails with it next weekend. then the R50 will get attention agian. from what have seen so far on the R50, a SAS is not all that hard. the biggest issue is steering, full hydro steering is a must IMO. mounting a steering box can be done, but isnt worth all the work specially if you are trying to fit 37"+ tires and/or trying to get near zero approach angle. csutke
got any pics of the zuk? and of the current SAS?
tmorgan4
I'm glad to see you're going full-hydro too. I'm not sure if you're aware of it but a lot of the Cherokee guys have issues with cracking the unibody where the steering box is attached. Full-hydro takes all the steering load off the frame. Good work.
89_trailboss
mmmm, rubber 39.5x13.5x17 bias Iroks mounted on 17x10's. tires are the biggest hit to the pocket book. everything else can be bought in pieces and be easier on the pocket book! threw the 39's on the diesel for kicks and giggles today. flat spots are INSANE. and they handle like CRAP on the road. im sure having 8k lbs on them doesnt help. but my god! needles to say, the 37" truxus will be going back on! lol. tmorgan4
I had planned on doing mine over this summer while I'm out of school but the Pathfinder is still leaking oil and pissing me off. I've just given up on working on it for a little while since I really want to buy another car so this can be a toy and not a car I have to drive everyday. It's hard to call it a DD when I've barely driven it in the past year! The best part about mine is the full hydro steering is done and installed. The only thing I have to do when I get an axle in to make the steering work is get some longer lines to the ram and make a mount for the ram on the 60.
