Horn question

my horn works intermitently, dont know if there is a bad contact in the steering wheel , I tried to take it apart and the lower part seems to be stuck and I didnt want to force it, so I squeez a file to clean the contacts , but no luck , I know the horn is located behind the front bumper inside the wheelwell, ( between the tire and the bumper) , have anyone had any trouble with the horn?

Sometimes the ground for the horns gets corroded (There are two, behind the bumper area IIRC, they bolt to the rad support/front end sheetmetal and simply ground through the attachment point) or the 12V+ wire on the horn corrodes. Check the wiring and wiggle each horn itself to see if the contact improves? Could be that OR the contacts in the steering wheel.

Mine has a bad spot in the contact at the wheel. I have to turn the wheel a little to make it work sometimes. I've been to lazy to pull it apart and fix it.

 

Theres a post of mine out there with a "quick fix" its not necessarily the correct way to fix it but eventually the cruise will stop working too b/c of this...I just shimmed the plate so it made contact with the 2 copper fittings again... to find it, its under one of the cruise control problem threads...

My cruise doesn't run through there, 93 and older it's on the trun signal lever :aok:

The worn down rods on the plates between the steering wheel and the shaft -does anyone happen to know a good replacing where to find it? I have yet to access them, but would love to get the horn working again.

I was able to get the horn working on my '95 just by cleaning up the contacts. If they're actually wore slap out, though, you may have to get creative. I don't think they're available on their own.

 

What year is yours? I've got a round-dash column sitting in my parts car, and AFAIK the contacts are still good.

Mine is a 95 (I also have an 02, but that R50, has a working horn). 

 

I was struggling to remove the steering without one of those fancy tools, but I wonder if a hardware section in Lowe's, whatever, would have something. 

 

We're having an excessive heat warning for today, so I may not tackle it further until the temps cool off.

Yeah, if it hasn't been off in a while, you'll probably need a puller. I think I used a harmonic balancer puller on mine. You could probably cobble something together from nuts and bolts and a piece of square tubing that would do the job. Make sure you've got the nut threaded back on a few turns if you're gonna keep yanking it by hand, or you'll end up wearing the wheel as a hockey mask. Oh, and mark the wheel and shaft with a paint pen if you haven't so it's easier to line it all back up when you're done.

 

My parts car is also a '95, so if the innards are truly borked, let me know and I'll see if I've got better ones.

Temps were tolerable earlier in the day. Another win is that my neighbour's has a steering wheel puller. It's been years since I last looked at it.

 

I am not having any luck in figuring out the part number as of yet. I appreciate all your help and support! And anything else you may be able to provide.

Got your PM. I had a poke at my spare one. Haven't quite figured out how the assembly comes off the column, but I noticed something about the contacts.

 

Mine are sticking out at least twice as far as yours--but they're sprung, and when I pushed on them, one of them stayed down. Probably bound up by old grease and dirt. That dried peanut butter looking schmoo on yours is probably what's left of the grease, and in similar condition to what remains around the contacts. Shoot a little WD40 on those, give them a wiggle, maybe pull on them gently with pliers--see if they're actually worn all the way down, or if they're just shy.

 

Looks like there's a cover screwed on behind the plungers. I haven't taken mine off, but I suspect that's what you'll need to do to clean out the bores and get them freed up properly if they are just gummed up.

I'll have to give it a ago this weekend, most likely. I don't think I got peanut butter in there for they do bounce back when I push of them, so maybe, I got some graham crackers or Cheezits on them? I have owned this Pathy since 99, so decades of food crumbs and road dust!

After a long battle with the snap ring (I just haven't mastered the pliers, nor feel I ever will lol) Also, to find out after the fact, I never needed to mess with the snap-ring lmao  I finally got off the related parts and scrubbed all the contacts with white vinegar.

The horn works!!!! I don't know if the cruise control does, for I am still waiting on a slave clutch cylinder to arrive.
