Hey

 

I am curious if anyone here may know what may be causing an issue that I have noticed with my brakes.

 

I have noticed this a few times now when braking, when I push the pedal in it feels as if I am not getting all the braking that I should be and i hear the brakes making somewhat of a clicking or a ticking noise. I never get an ABS lights coming on or anything and have never had any issues before. I notice this every so often but its not constant.

 

Just wondering what some peoples thoughts on this may be so I can look into it further.

The clicking is your ABS working. If you're on slick pavement, that's normal.

 

If you're on dry pavement, then one of your wheel sensors is probably shot, and is sensing slip, activating the ABS when it shouldn't be. Same thing happened to my parent's Exploder, and changing the wheel bearing assembly (which houses the abs sensor for that wheel) fixed the issue.

The same thing happened with me. As stated above, if it happens on dry pavement, it needs to be replaced. My truck did this on dry and shortly after the abs light came on. I only had to replace one sensor, but it was a pain nontheless. If your truck is pulsating (not just the pedal), there is a good chance that your rotors are warped.

I have noticed that it does this sound for the most part when its on slick or icy roads (Live in the Maritimes in Canada)

 

I don't feel any pulsing on the pedal so I don't thing the rotors are warped but if I do change the bearings then I will do the rotor and pads as well, might as well do it all then while I have it all apart.

 

Now I guess I know what the problem is just need to figure out what one and how hard it is to change these things, anyone ever have to go through this?

It really doesn't sound to me like you need to replace any parts. As you noticed, the sound (the ABS engaging) is merely preventing your tires from locking up when you brake on low-traction surfaces, such as ice. This is normal.

 

It's important to understand that ABS does not shorten braking distances on slick surfaces. Its primary function is to help you maintain control of the vehicle while braking.

Don't remind me P... abs/brakes are usless in ice/slippery snow.

Thats what I have noticed as well. This is the first vehicle I have owned that has ABS as I usually opt not to have it.

 

You guys are right I think the ABS should be ok for now as long as its working on dry pavement. I just was very unsure about the sound because this is the first time I have heard a noise like this in the braking system and it didn't sound like a good one so I thought I would see what it was all about.

I think in the summer I might take it out and see if I like it any better with it off.

 

I just feel that I have greater control if I decide if I want the brakes to lock or how hard I want them to brake.

In the summer, you'll rarely find that ABS kicks in. Remember, if you disable ABS and you start to skid, you won't have any control of the vehicle at all. Don't do it without first doing some controlled tests in a safe place (such as in an office complex parking lot on a weekend) with ABS on and off.
