A key question, literally

Ok, this will sound a bit weird, the area on my ignition key that is used to secure to a key ring has broken. What I want to do is drill a hole in the key so I can re-secure it to my key ring. My question is, will drilling the plastic area on the key damage it, I am under the impression that there is some sort of device in the key that is used to overcome the vehicle immobilization system, the vehicle is a 99 Pathfinder.

i donno...but u can always call the dealer and ask them or even stop by walmart and they shoudl be able to tell u if they can copy it...if they can copy it then theres prob not a chip...

For my 02, the chip looks like it is located at the base of the plastic bit (where the metal comes out) so it is close to the reader.

 

Look at yours to see if that is the same. All the keys I have seen with chips have some sort of access hatch, then you will know about where it is if you have one.

96-00 Pathfinders do not have a transponder chip in them, so drill away...

96-99 doesn't a chip. The 99.5-04 does.

Ya, I'm sure about it. in fact I'm looking at my book as I type just to be sure. Although it states 00-up only it is possible that a late year 99 or 99.5 could have it.
