I am looking for a fuel economy upgrade for my 01 Pathy. I have increased my tire size a bit recently, and my mileage is down. So I want to mitigate the economy loss with an upgrade.

BTW, I did think this way before I joined this forum. :D

It only last longer.Performance wise theyre the same

So, in other words, they don't increase fuel economy, they just simply maintain it at the optimum level for a longer time. (Old, worn spark plugs can reduce fuel economy.)

i thought i had read on this forum that the plug upgrade would help with fuel economy b/c of hotter spark. maybe not. if there is no economy increase, i will probably hold on that one as my pathy only has 52k miles.

anyone know a multiplier for adjusting the odometer after my tire size upgrade? an online calculator said that i have 3.5% fewer revolutions per mile. so should i add 3.5% to my mileage then divide by fuel purchased to get the true ecomomy?

thanks pathians!

Yup.You also have to keep in mind that leaving youre plugs for a long time like 2-3 years is kinda risky. It may seize up in there for that long period of time even with an anti seize. I have not done a tune up on mine for 2 years and beleive you me its scary pulling that old plugs in there.

You might wanna go with the NGK wires too.

the recommended interval for plugs is 100k. and i dont have wires in my vq. just the coils.

No wires? You mean you dont have spark plug wires?

can anyone give me a cost estimate on manual hubs installed? i did a quick search and it seems that warn premiums cost about 150 for the parts. is that the brand to go with. i dont remember ever seeing another brand mentioned in mod lists or sigs. also, will my stock se wheels accomodate the new hubs? if i need to mod my wheels or buy new ones, i will pass on this.

thanks again for everyone's replies!

I think that price is about right... I know I got them a bit cheaper than what 4x4parts has them listed at (cant remember the website, but I do have a reciept at home)

As for installing them, if you have any mechanical abilities at all, do them yourself, it's a really easy job. I've posted links to a series of pics that XPLORX4 has on his website a few times on this board... I can search it down again if you need.

I know someone else makes them for our trucks besides Warn (I want to say Superwinch??) But whoever it is, I know will make Vengeful cringe, and tell you DONT DO IT! I think most of us run with the Warns.

Here is a link to a tire calculator:

Canadian Driver Tire Calculator link

You input your old (stock) tire size and new size, it then will show you the difference (both % and speed). You can pick metric or barbarian units :P

Plus it shows a neat graphic of your old vs new tire.

Hope this helps.

Probably cost about $150-$200 for installation. Or, if you have some basic tools and a pair of snap-ring pliers ($10 at your local auto parts store), you can do it yourself and save a bundle on labor by following these photos:

The VQ35 has independent coils for each spark plug, instead of a distributor cap.

Even without the distributor it still has to have plug wires to go to each individual coils right?

That sure looks pretty simple.

Whats the advantage of having a manual locking hub to auto locking ?

Auto locking hubs actually disengage between changes in direction of travel. If you're stuck and need to back out of the hole you're in, the hubs unlock for maybe a 1/4-wheel rotation before re-engaging. This means for that 1/4-turn, you're only in 2WD.

Auto hubs can also be weaker than manual hubs.

Other advantages of manual hubs include being able to unlock them to use the 4LO transfer case gearing, but still be in 2WD: "2LO"

A week or two ago, I was descending a very steep grade (nearly 11%) called "Old Priest Grade" which descends 1540 feet in just 2.7 miles. It's narrow and very curvy. With 2LO, I was able to descend the grade at a safe speed without using my brakes. The vehicle behind me had smoke coming from his brakes by the time we hit the bottom of the grade.

tecciball,

Maybe this website can help. I ordered my Warn hubs through them. $134.90 shipped!
