Fuel light

My wife panics when the light comes on (Pathy or Xterra). She has to stop at the very first gas station, or sends me out to get gas before she will drive it again. I've driven 50+ miles with it on and still had around 2 gallons left (size of tank - gals to fill).

As 88 said, it isn't good to run an electric fuel pump dry. Most stock pumps are cooled by the gas. But you shouldn't need to panic when the light does come on - though my wife still does. :)

i don't know if it's the same for gas engines, but when you run a diesel dry, it destroys a lot more than just the fuel pump. I think it has something to do with sucking up all the grit and stuff left at the bottom of the fuel tank. I don't remember what the part is called that my friend had to buy for his 2500 ram, but i do know it cost him $2500 for a new one after his went kaput when he ran the tank dry.

I've gotten 'the shakes' once in mine as I was pulling into the gas station. I think i drove it about 40 km after the light went on, but not gunning the engine around everywhere. Either or, it's not a wise practice to get in the habit of Kramer

i calculate my gas milage everytime i fill up (about 3 times a week) and i have calculated it up and i get about 45 after the light comes on...but it'll come off and on sometimes so i dont try to push it...last time i pushed it i had figured up in my head that i was going to be .5 miles from making it to the gas station by work and stopped 1.5 miles before hand and with rounding errors i had about 8 miles left (~.5 gals)

I'm not saying it'll happen every time, but I've seen way too many people with posts like "ran it out of gas and now no fuel pump".

Good idea to ere on the side of caution :takebow:

Cheers 88 and all :aok:

mine will run on below E for about 120 miles b4 the light comes on...it drops to the e after about 160 miles of driving and sits for a while then drops below e then finally the light will come on and off then it'll stay on

Im afraid to let it get that low, but it's good 2 know.
