  1. get the best tires you can afford. Lift kits will allow you to go through deeper mud and larger rockpiles. If you have some nice mud terrains, they will help your 2wd situation out more than any other mod i can think of

    yeah i know, because I have the SE with 'offroad' package including 31's, cruise, stepbars, an aluminium brush guard, lsd, rear tire carrier, but no foglights? I always thought that all those were options and not offered all in a 'package'

    odometer problem

    that's crazy... the same thing happened to mine right when i bought it. It had 96 and change, The dealer could not sell it with a broken odometer, so an entire new cluster was installed with a fresh meter. People actually think my truck has only 65 000 kms on it, until they see the b.o.s.
  5. I would go with an oiled cotton type filter as opposed to the foam ones. My 27 year old lawnmower has a foam air filter in it. -pretty high tech eh?
  6. you could use a dolly too. Just drive the front axle onto it. I'm pretty sure the rear wheels need to be supported as well (at least when mine got towed with a dead alternator)

  8. a longer wheelbase gives the truck more stability when braking. It is less likely to jacknife under heavy braking. If your horse trailer is equipped with a surge brake system or better yet hydraulic brake assist, this lessens the chance of a jacknife occuring. It is imperative a heavy trailer has this especially when braking in wet road conditions. My best friend has a 22 foot boat he towed with a 2wd 1999 dakota 6 cyl. and we nearly got into trouble when slowing the whole thing down on a damp road. When he got enough money, he bought a 2500 ram with cummins powerplant (darn rich bricklayers!) which solved the sketchyness issue.
  9. score! she looks like she's in decent shape! you can try the meguires 3 step stuff. I had a red miata with a bit of a paint fade, but it does a decent job in restoring the shine. If you want to get really busy, you could try a wetsand to smooth out the deep scratches and pitting. I saw the dude on trucks! do it to an explorer with great results

    it could be condensation if you live in a hot climate. Is it more than a dribble? fill in where you live and such too! You might find another member close to you to go wheeling with

  14. If you want to increase traction, the first and best single purchase you can make to upgrade you rig is tires. They will make the biggest difference for the most reasonable amount of money spent. If you've already bought new ones and are still struggling for control, you might want to step up the tread depth and lug size. BFG AT/KO's are what my brother's boss uses on his landscaping fleet -he says they are great for all conditions with reasonable road noise levels. If you are going to spend a good deal of time wheeling, get a more aggressive pattern such as BFG Mud Terrains, or the Goodyear counterparts. Personally, I like when the tires hum down the pavement. No other upgrade you do will give you as much bang for your buck as new shoes.
  15. 100km/h is as fast as i take my truck. I don't like speeding in a 4000lb suv. I'll borrow my brother's car for a quick burn if i get 'the shakes'. I've never really had a car that does 100mph COMFORTABLY, although the old man's audi a4 is pretty smooth past 70 mph. The miata i used to have handles like it's on rails, it's a great car for throwing into corners, but it could have used another 400 or 600 cc's!

  18. yeah, i fiddled around with the choke to get it going, but it still gets the same trouble. I don't want to run the motor any more as I may burn out the tops of the pistons
  19. I've got a 1999 Johnson 25 hp 2-stroker, 2 cyl. with a single carb that has a bad case of the cough/shakes. I do all the regular maintnence including winterizing. My problem began with a rich mixture put through when i lent the boat to my friends dad. He put in 30:1 cocktail while it requires 50:1, so there was an abundance of oil on the plugs and in the chamber. I've run about 2/3 of a tank of good mix through it. Now when i give her full throttle, it floods itself and dies. I can only operate at about half throttle. It feels as though the motor wants to go by surging for a moment after you decrease the throttle. The carb operates normally as i just adjusted the linkage. I've cleaned the plugs and reinstalled them, but the hesitaiton persists. I'm reluctant to take it to the marine mechanic as he charges 69 bucks and hour! any ideas on what it could be? I thought it was dirty plugs but no. Maybe the a/f ratio? i have no idea...

    Electrical Gremlins

    the haynes-brand manuals aren't too bad. The one for our trucks has quite a few tests you can run on your electrical system. A multimeter or tester light is an excellent tool for diagnosing electrical problems, but who needs a manual when you have this message board!
