  1. If you just converted over to R134a and it immediately was not as cold that actually makes sense, and there is probably nothing wrong with your system. R12 has a higher specific heat capacity, so in any system it will run colder with r12. Newer cars compentate for that by making the condenser (the radiator part of the A/C) much larger than the old r12 condensers to get the same amount of cooling.
  2. I took the wife out wheeling in the desert. I think she was pretty scared a few times we were destined to be stranded. There were a few hairy spots going in and out of some washes, but my trusty Pathfinder proved her wrong. Hopefully she will feel more confident in the future.

  3. Since both the Odometer and speedo quit at the same time there is definately something either wrong with the cable or where it connects to the speedo. At the end of the speedo cable there is a plastic piece that drives the speedo. It is pretty thin and gets brittle over time. Mine broke on me when I was replacing a speed for a different reason. I fixed mine by supergluing a piece of disposable pen over the out side. just made sure it was snug on the plastic piece and small enough to slide in the speedo. I have read a post about this happening to someone and they replaced that piece with a metal one. I'm not sure wheather they got the piece from Nissan or scrounged a wrecking yard for it. Good luck!

    Steelies

I'm rockin the steelies and will until I decide to put biger tires than they should really handle on the Pathy. I think they l;ook good with hub covers and beautyrings.
  5. Adjusted my torsion bars. It almost looks level now!
  6. When a nut is recomended to be a replace item it's becouse it has built in locking feature. Usually either a nylon insert or a pinched in portion at the top of the nut. As long as it takes a wrench, not your fingers, to turn the nut while the bolt threads are engaged in the lock part of the nut you are fine. Usually a nylon insert lock nut is good for 3 or 4 uses.
  7. Congrats souds like you found a great deal. I thought I stole mine for $2200! After market seems to be drying up a little for the older Pathfinders. There are still all the parts you are looking for, but not a huge selection. There might be some ARB bumpers floating around out there but I think they discontinued making them for the 87-95. Here is a link to a similar item. http://www.tacticalarmorgroup.com/TAGStore/TAGStore/tabid/71/List/1/CategoryID/364/Level/a/Default.aspx 4x4 parts.com also caries a good selection of parts. http://www.4x4parts.com/nissan/ Good luck
  8. Smittybilt xrc12 Winch and Hella lights are on!

  9. Love the Nissan factory guard way more than the very few available for the WD21. Added bonus 4 Holes and a mounting plate let me mount a Smittybilt xrc12 on it. The push bar part is pleanty sturdy, just a little thinner than 1/4 inch, and it has upper mounts that attatch to the bumper mounts.
  10. F.A.G bearings are actually very high quality. I have not replaced wheel bearing but at work we use them in large indutrial pumps and other machines. I've never seen any fail except when they were not lubed properly. Good luck with the change out
  11. Since your speedo works fine, it is definately something wrong with the gearing in the back of your speedo assembly. There is nothing to do but take it out and see if you can find something cracked or loose. Its Not hard to pull. If you don't see anything obvious try blowing it out with air and spray a silicone lubricant in there. Other option is just replace the whole assembly with a junkyard/ e-bay replacement. Be sure you get the exaxct same instrument cluster. Different models had different plugs and gages find one that matches exactly. I spent a few hours dremeling the speedo housing to get a replacement one to fit, and even now my trip odometers won't reset, so I need to get back in there. Also be careful reinstalling the cluster. There is a plastic sleeve at the end of the speedo cable that drives the speedometer. That piece of plastic can be brittle and crack. If that happens it might not spin the speedo at all. I fixed mine by cutting a piece of disposable pen and supergluing it to the outside. Good luck at figuring it out
  12. Wincch is in my garage. Just have to clock the clutch lever 90 degrees and drill 4 holes in my brush guard.

    fuel economy

When I first purchased my Pathy it was getting 20 MPG on street tires. After I put BFG KM2s on it it dropped to about 18. and its been pretty steady except when I take it off road. There are several things that can contribute to bad gas milage. First and easiest is the Air filter. I would hope that you replaced it in the last 3 years so probably not that. Tire pressure too low. Tune up: Plugs, wires and timing. O2 sensor bad Throttle position sensor faulty or mis-aligned (reads farther open than it actually is) Faulty Mass air flow sensor. Automatic transmission shifting faulty (not the proper RPM) Driving conditions and habits: Flooring it from a stop, a lot of stop and go driving or High speed >75MPH cruising Of course if your Pathfinder has a 6 inch lift and 44inch tires that wouldn't help either.
  14. Been doing a little wheeling in the desert, got my new to me factory brush guard. Winch is on the way!

  15. You need to start by asking yourself what your goal is with the truck. How are you going to be using it. Off road monster or daily driver? Are you more interested in actual off road performance or just looks? How much green are you ready to put in to a 20 year old pathy that you will probably not be able to sell for any more than you paid for it? Make a plan of where you are going with the truck before you start you mods and then work on them one at a time. I love the KM2s for off road. I think they are one of the top all around tires when you leave the pavement. They are not the greatest on pavement. My 89 does a little drift in a turn since I put them on my truck. The all terains I had previously were way better on pavement. As far as actual tips here's what I recommend from my own experience and poking around the sight. First start out with dependability. If you have an automatic tranny get an aftermarket tranny cooler and abandon the stock in radiator cooler. Give your truck a good tune up if you have no idea when it was done. A new set of plugs and ignition wires can work wonders. Change out the oil in your tranny front and rear diffs and transfer case. A lot of people never change those fluids and they are suposed to every 30 or 40 thousand miles. Make sure your suspension is solid and the frame isn't rusted out anywhere. Make sure your battery is in good shape with the hold down bracket in place. Clean tight connections on the battery cables both at the battery and the terminal conections. If the coolant isnt pretty antifreeze color get/do a coolant flush and put in a quality antifreeze 50/50 with water. For Off roadiness the stock set up with good tires like you have will get you through almost all but really extreme trails. The first step to offroad domination is a locker rear. $300 for a lock rite gear type or around $800 for an air locker. The gear type will make racheting noises when making turns on pavement, but works great. Air lockers are also available for the front diff. If you are hitting some hard trails and have a little larger than stock tires an idler arm brace might be a good idea. Decide wheather or not you want to do a lift. he only practical reason to lift your truck is to fit big tires underneath the wheel wells. You can go 32 or 33 inch tires without having to lift the truck. On the other hand it does look cool. Body lift is the cheap way to go. Suspension lift will give you more travel and be better if you are going to do rock crawling type 4x4ing. If you are going hard core rock crawler getting rid of the independant front suspension in favor of a solid axel set up. This company makes suspension parts for our trucks. http://www.calmini.com/ My take on winches is that you probably will never need one unless you plan to hit very difficult trails on your own. In a group someone can always pull you out. If you want one you either need a factory brush guard or aftermarket bumper to mount it to. I believe ARB discontinued their bumpers for our truck but Tactical armor group still makes one http://www.tacticalarmorgroup.com There is a lot of info hidden in the NPORA threads. Use the search engine to read about particular mods you are interested in. Good luck with the your truck, Phil
  16. After looking at everything I'm leaning toward the Smittybilt XRC-12. It might be a little over kill but better to have more than you need. I like that it pulls less amps at 12000 lbs than the 8 does at 8000 and that on the 4th layer of line it is still pulling 8500 lbs. its line speed is a little slower but with no need for a snachblock it ends up being alot faster. I just think that combined with the durability of a heavier machine is worth the $200 more than the xrc-8. Even at $500 it is a bargain (about 50% the cost) compared to a Warn, or almost any other brand in that capacity range. XRC-8 Line speed and amp draw (first layer) Lbs 0 2000 4000 6000 8000 Fpm 37.2 18 13.1 10.2 8.2 Amps 75 195 260 335 410 Line pull and cable capacity Layer of cable 1 2 3 4 Lbs 8000 6900 5850 5100 XRC-12 Line speed and amp draw (first layer) Lbs 0 2000 4000 6000 8000 10000 12000 Fpm 23.5 12.8 10.5 9.4 7.4 6.3 5 Amps 65 120 165 215 270 320 370 Line pull and cable capacity Layer of cable 1 2 3 4 Lbs 120000 10270 9200 8500
  17. The only extra step for shipping out of the US vice in, is that you have to fill out a customs form and take that to the desk with you.
  18. Hi,

I'm new to NPORA saw you on the members map as living in the Phoenix area. Wanted to suggest a group to go out with. I was hoping to get some other Pathfiders out there with me. www.adventureoffroadclub.com

    Thanks,

  20. Got the new tires They are pretty good and less noise on the road than I expected. They definately have a different on road feel than the A/T tires previously on there.

  21. Thats a pretty simple calculation you just need the measurement of the drum and of the spool when full. You would just use this equation: Drum Diameter/Full spool diameter X rating. So if you have a 3 in drum that goes to 4 in full spool your ending up with 7500 lb final pull on a 10000 lb rating. Easiest way to kick up your pull is use a snatch block and bring thcable back to your truck it doubles the pull but reduces the speed it pulls you out by half.
  22. I've found a good group for trail riding with in the Phoenix, AZ area. www.adventureoffroadclub.com They alternate between Hikes and trail runs. And its all free. Just meet up and head off as a group. I will be participating in the run next week. Table Mesa East to Great Western Trail Adventure February 26, 2011 AORC Trail Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (Off Road) From I-17 we take Table Mesa Road heading east, crossing through several canyons and following the Aqua Fria River. The trail T's into the Great Western Trail, which we will take north. The trail gradually turns back to I-17 and exits at Bloody Basin Road. This is high desert and very scenic. Meet: 9:00am @ I-17 and Table Mesa Road (East side) Hope to see some Pathfiders out there, Phil
  23. This is all I have for pics but I'll get some up.
  24. Hello Everyone, I just picked up an 89 XE a few weeks ago. This is my first 4x4 truck. I think I already have the off road bug. I've already been out tearing up some dry river bed and hills west of Phoenix. I'm excited about NPORA. I've always been a big motorhead but that has mostly been my 1992 AWD Eagle Talon for the last 10 years. DSM has always had a strong member support even if the aftermaket support wasn't out there. It's always good to know that there is already a thread with the answer or If you post a problem someone has been there and will answer your question and get you pointed in the right direction. I plan on tinkering a lot with my truck to get it just the way I want it. I know I will have questions. Hopefully I can be a help to some of you as well. Keep your axles underneath you, Phil
  25. I'm loving this truck, Popped one of the old tires on some sharp rocks out by Saddle Mountain. Got some BFG KM2's on the way!
