My truck is an 87, I just explained mounting the X rack in another thread, post #4. http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=28105&pid=531379&st=0entry531379 And I must add I love your slotted rotors that I put on my Titan! I fought brake problems with that truck since it was new until I read about your rotors on clubtitan. James

My average of 15 in town I'm not complaining about it's the 13 on the highway thats getting me. So no one else gets worse mileage on the highway? It should do better on the highway. My motor is freshly tuned up, new fuel and air filters but It might be my exhaust thats killing me in the higher rpms. I see alot of y'all have headers, all the exhaust on my truck is still stock, looks like original converter too. It doesn't seem to be restricted sitting still with a vacuum gauge. I don't want to start breaking bolts right now because hunting season is about to start. I guess that will be another project for the summer. James

What kind of fuel mileage are you guys with WD21 with 31" mud tires getting? I have changed everything that can be changed as for as tuneup goes including O2, I have almost perfectly even 180psi compression per cylinder so the motor is not shot (only has 108K on the vehicle) The truck came with 31s so the odometer is right, I checked it with my GPS. Back and forth to work 55mph and only 4 miles so it hardly has time to warm up, I average 15mpg. The first highway trip I took in it on the interstate with the cruse set on 70mph I got barely 13mpg! I know these M/Ts are heavy but I didn't think it would get worse on the highway. I know when this model came out the speed limit was 55 so I guess the motor was tuned for this speed and rpm. My next trip I will take hwy 190 instead of I10 to see if the lower speed makes a difference. James

Welcome to the crappy nissan brakes! I had this problem with my first 04 titan but it wasn't at 60,000 miles it was at 3500 and again at 7500 and again at 12,000. Because of this and several other problems I traded it in 05 for a 06 model that had the supposedly updated brakes. This one started at 4000 miles over and over again until I spent $425 on a set of frozen rotors and hawk pads. Now no more shaking. Try getting the rotors turned and you might be ok being they lasted to 60,000. If not I recommend slotted frozen rotors. They are members here. When nissan started making their vehicles mid sized they forgot to make the brakes bigger, and they are too proud to admit a screw up so they just keep telling you nothing is wrong and hope you quit bugging them. That's why I will never buy a new nissan again.

Some of the holes I drilled into a roof support too but if you can find a short step drill you should be ok. It didn't cause a problem unless the liner would have still been in there. I didn't run into anything important like wires. Using a straw and a shop vac you could probably get most of the chips out but I don't think it will cause a problem if left in there I'm just picky like that. I think 3/8 is the size I stopped at for the 1/4-20 threaded rivets. I put sealer around each rivet before I put them in so it would be doable without removing the liner. I thought that was how I was going to have to do it too but when I took it off of the X I pushed on the threaded hole in it's roof and could tell they were just in the sheet metal also. That is probably why it only has a 80# weight rating though. By giving it something else to mount to it should theoretically be good for more weight. Mine will get all the weight I feel like putting up there once I build a basket and I will see how it hold up. James

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/ctd/1955338301.html These guys are closer to the coast than me, that oil floating up on the beach must be affecting their brains! Low mileage, 129,000 my 87 has 108,000. Also I wish my pathy had that 12v fuel injection. They even posted pics to show you that it has mixed matched tires. I'm not saying it's not a nice truck but $4975 James

I have hawk pads with slotted frozen rotors on my 06 Titan. So far they work great. No noise, better stopping power than the factory set, and most important no warped rotors with the truck shaking every time I stopped since the truck had 4000 miles on it! Damn nissan and their ignorant service departments! James One other thing, The brake pedal will feel spongy at first till you get used to it. The truck is stopping with less brake pressure so your pedal feels softer than the way it felt before bet it's still stopping at the same rate. This may be just with the combination of the slotted rotors on my truck.

I could have done it without pulling the headliner but I really wanted to know what I was drilling into. The step drill I was using was long too, I might have went through the liner. Also knowing all the drill shaving were on top of the liner would have drove me crazy till I got them out! I'm kind of weird like that. James

This is how I did mine. You have to shorten the front and shorten the two adjustable cross bars. I have a sunroof so that made it alot worse. I kept cutting little slices off the front and trying that rail on top of the truck until the center foot sat flush on the roof. The pathfinder has a small step in the roof but not as big as the X. Then after cutting the other rail to length I sat them both on the roof as close to the sides of the vehicle as I could and still get a flat surface to mount the feet on. Thats when I found out that the front feet would be over the sun roof. I cut the cross bars to the length I needed then I started grinding clearance on the front feet. The front feet sit over the corners of the sunroof but the bolt holes both are over steel. So I ground enough clearance so that the feet would sit over the corner of the sun roof and still allow the sunroof to open. Next was the really fun part especially when you do it in the middle of the summer in 98* heat, pull all the interior out from the windshield to the back gate. Set the rack on top and measure side to side till it is centered and mark your hole locations. Drill holes with a step drill so you get nice round holes. I put in the threaded rivets from harbor freight in 1/4-20. I used some black windshield acrylic around each rivet to seal them. Next I lined the whole roof with sound deadening material and then put some insulation under that before putting the interior back. You don't need to do this but it makes the truck nicer after. Then set the rack back on top, put a lot of Teflon tape on your screws so water doesn't leak through the treads and bolt it down. Now stand back and admire it and think was it really worth all that work? James

I had a 86 ford ranger stx with the 2.9 port injected V6 It had 140hp and ran like a bat out of hell! I could pass a full sized chevy pickup with a 350 in it. With the small 6 Ford went from carb straight to port injected. Thats why I don't understand why this pathy don't have more acceleration it's got a little more hp than the ford did. The electronics on the ford sucked though, thats the main reason I bought a snap on scanner. It left me on the road twice because of the ignition module. After that I kept a spare in the truck with the tool to change it. I went through 4 TPS in the 170,000 that I had it. Finally got tired of it and traded it for a chevy. James

I remember a post about the crank being different by year. So as long as its from a 94 or 95 it will fit my 87? James
-
My local pick a part just got a 97 pathy. Truck is in very good shape, the only reason I can see for it being there is probably the auto trans. Someone already took the front of the motor off and I noticed it has the round tooth pulleys. Would pulleys from a 97 fit on my 87? James

Manual transmission TSB
JamesRich replied to madkiwi's topic in Technical Service Bulletins & Recall Information
No I still didn't get it out. The square drive hole is buggered beyond any shim help. I didn't think of the floor jack or else I might not have buggered it. I had both feet on the opposite frame rail with a large ratchet when it twisted out. I got some NPT easy outs. They are short and have a shoulder to bottom out against the plug. Not sure if they will work, I haven't felt like cursing that much again. If ever my blood pressure gets back into a normal range I will try again. If I can't get it out I will just remove the fill plug and let it drain, then add 1 1/2L of fresh oil to top it off and worry about it next year. At least I will know it has enough oil in it. James -
Who remembers the old 70s model short bed Chevy pickup with a 250 inline 6 with a two barrel carb? They would hang with and sometimes pass a 350 V8. I don't like jeeps but my sister has a 07 wrangler sahara 4 door with the V6 and it's gutless compared to there old 4L inline. They have made the jeep into a car for people that just want the look and not go off road. I guess in low range it would pull ok but it's a turd on the highway. She is going through a divorce right now too so it looks like I inherited a jeep to work on. Got to help out my Sis even though she has bad taste in vehicles. James James

And I thought I had a lot of @!*% to do! I commend you on your vision, you have more nuts than me! When I would have seen how far the intake needed to go back I would have just tossed it in the shed with the other junk I collected. Good luck on the rest of the project. After that the wiring will be easy. James

Why can a manual tow 1500 lbs less?
JamesRich replied to laxman0324's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I used to drive a friends ford one ton pulling a 40 foot mini float on the weekends to make extra money. I'm not sure what the trailer weight was but I took it down to Brownsville Texas once and put a 15,000# tool house on it and brought it back to Lafayette Louisiana. It had to be around 25,000# with the trailer. The truck had its ass full, by the time I reached the top of the Lake Charles La bridge I was down to 30 mph but it made it and many trips after that. It is amazing what those one tons can take. The only problem with pulling a trailer that big is it's too big for the truck and beats the hell out of the truck and driver. James -

The manual come with a higher final drive gear and the auto trans torque converter helps it get the load going easier. Don't believe them though,I once towed 8000 pounds on a goose neck trailer on a 4 hour trip with my 90 model half ton Chevrolet with a 5 speed. The dealer said the max tow rating was 4500. Just don't use 5 gear. James -
I agree with Kingman it sound like just an exhaust leak and the body looks great too. But if the owners can't get you a title walk away! I checked on this before I got my truck, Craig's list is full of ads for pathys with no title. If the original owner won't get it for you I don't think there is a legal way for you to get it. A friend of mine even had the vehicle taken from him after he put a lot of work in it. The cops show up and say you are in possession of a stolen vehicle so either give it up or come to jail, then your standing there with nothing but a dumb look on your face and no vehicle. For the right price it would be good to part out but don't try to get a title yourself. If they really want to sell it they will get a title. James

I went to pick a part today and pulled a couple Nissan pumps. A 94 maxima and I think a 96 sentra. Both pumps were exactly the same. Then I went home and compared them to my pumps. The main pump is basically the same. The only difference is two plastic clips on each side of the pathfinder pump wiring plug that help hold it to the reservoir. On the cars the tank was molded to hold the pump but other than that it was exactly the same. I stuffed it in the rubber grommet and I'm pretty sure it wont fall out. The rear pump motor is probably the same but has a different plug and the pump is totally different so no go unless your motor is bad and you want to switch the pump to the good motor. Cut the wiring harness off the car you get the motor from. At least now I will be able to clean my windshield. James

So any R50 5 speed will fit in a WD21 and from 96 on up the fill hole was in the correct location? James
-
Will pumps from another Nissan work? I'm tired of trying to find some in the scrap yard and I'm not ready to pay the $120 yet, but glad that still is an option. The local pick a part has some newer sentras and maximas, think they will be the same? James

JamesRich replied to madkiwi's topic in Technical Service Bulletins & Recall Information
You cant drill another hole higher up because the case would be to thin. A thicker boss was cast in the case where the plug hole was supposed to be so it had enough meat for threads, the rest of the case is thinner. The S pipe sounds like a good idea how about a pic? I can't get my drain plug out to change it and my main concern is that I don't have enough fluid. This way I could check it. Do you have to pull the carpet back to get the shifter boot off on a 5 speed? I was just eye balling it and it looks like it would be hard to get to the bolts. James -
Hey watch it now! My Dad drives a dodge diesel. He didn't screw it up with stacks and stickers but we did put a banks power pack on it and he does think its a race truck and tries to pass anything on the road. It is kind of embarrassing for the guy in his loud ass camaro to get smoked by a 63 year old man in a 3/4 ton crew cab long bed truck! And my old man wondered why I ran the hell out of his truck when I was 16! James

With the way you wheel, from your nose on the ground pic, a bumper is just going to get you stuck! James
