good luck hopefully its something simple

im just sorta curious...y shouldnt you hit the cams with an airgun...i always use a breaker bar and hammer (same concept) but as long as the rockers are loose and the sproket is jammed i dont see the problem with using air to break things loose? granted its usually my last resort as well but i didnt know if there was some reason y u wouldnt want to use air except for possibly breaking a bolt off which in that case i have a drill and ez outs b.c most will come out after the tension is released from the bolt some1 please enlighten me

i fixed 1 in a 92 hb i donno how similar it is but the cables should have lil black clips that snap around the cable sheething if u can pull those out then u can get the panel out a lil bit and unhook the cable from the switches there were a couple of hidden screws in his but from the pix it looks like u got them out so i'd look for more screws and try to unhook those cables...if theres a junkyard around that will let u pull ure own stuff and have a truck like ures i might would go experiment on it b/c if u break something on it it wont matter rather than breaking it on ures...hope u get it figured out

yea sounds like a dead cylinder to me...does the exhaust smell like raw gas? this could point to a fowled plug or plug wire i'd also check the dis cap and possably run a compression test if nothing else seems to be the cause
-
i'll just go with yes... hopefully it'll be finished up soon tho as of right now the only thing messed up is the front windshield the front bumper/mount and the starter...once i get the new used motor cranked up hopefully that'll be all and ohh yea an exhaust leak and the iniside looks stripped right now between working on the igition and having the shift boot out and carpet all pulled up and radio/dash out cuze i tested a guy at works factory wiring in his HB to prove it was the crappy radio he bought and not his antena poor poor truck but shes gonna get a bath and a wax job as soon as the projects completed then maybe a week later a minor run but nothing too serious for a while

doesnt look too bad...the heads have certain spots in the 3 or 4 diff 1's i've seen get buildup in the same places i guess the oil gets trapped and doesnt drain out and sludges up now from ure pix i saw something very interesting...does any1 know if the 86 maxima lower intake is the same as whats on slicks truck? it looks exactly the same b/c it was fuel injected...if it is this would broaden up my spectrum for possible buyers when i go to sell all the intake parts off of the maxima motor i have and ure replacing the timing belt and water pump while ure in there correct? i would try to do both b/c u dont wanna break a belt it makes for a very bad day and murphey's law says if u dont change the waterpump in a month or so it'll start going out on u i did a waterpump and didnt know any better about changing the timing belt and it looked good to me but i didnt know antifreeze broke down belts and here was the result belt valves (the 2nd from the right is strait the other 3 are bent

after a quick google i found this site... decals -
i envy you... and on a poorness note i understand that completly im still using the oe 87 tensioner so i'd assume ures is still good and i think think they're like $40
-
i've never replaced my tensioner ( sssh ) mine always looked ok but its just 1 of those things that i've heard every1 wants to replace but them things are expensive...i guess i'll ride the line till it bites me then from then on i'll change the tensioner plus i dont think after u tighten down the retaining bolt or whatever u wanna call it...i dont think its gonna move but the bearings could go bad sometime and cause some unpleasent noises... if u've had ure motor out im sure u can handle this with no problem b/c my 1st time ever doing anything "serious" with the motor was top end work after i broke a timing belt when i didnt change it after the water pump b/c i didnt know anything about milage on a timing belt and it looked good but my mechanic buddy said antifreeze will break down the structure of the belt i also liked using goo gone (think thats where a lot of my smoke and smell came from) but that stuff gets rid or any kinda oil or sticky stuff and 3m pads to remove the remaining gasket after scraping with a strait razor
-
yea that too...but no matter how clean u keep everything theres still gonna be smoke and smell the smoke was from the engine bay and not from the exhaust sorry i didnt clarify that 1...plus it was dark by the time we got to crank up and we were in a pretty small garage even tho the door was open i might be over exhagerating it a lil bit that was about 4 years ago and i was scared my truck was never going to run again...for some reason that should be the case now but im just like whatever...i swore i smelt stuff and heard stuff i had never heard b4 i was just being paranoid
-
and if i can do it any1 can...it seems like its a big task but once you've done it got it back together and shes runnin u'll look back and kinda laugh at it if ure like me i was scared to death about pullin heads b/c i hadnt ever done anything like that b4 but now i didnt think twice about pulling my motor and doing this swap... the only other thing i could think of when u 1st crank it up ure gonna have a lot of hand oil and what not on parts as well as the new gaskets and what not that will smoke and stink to high heaven this was a lil nerve racking at 1st for me b/c no1 told me it was going to smoke like that and the guy helpin me gotta good laugh at that cuze i was like ohh crap we messed up but everything worked out good luck with it and im sure it'll be fine and like every1 else said if u have problems im sure some1's had them and can help with my last project i've had lots of issues so i think i got most of them covered but i've learned a lot more during this project (my motor swap) than any other if something breaks goes wrong other things are going to go wrong so just stop for na hr or so and go back to it if its still a bad day its a bad day try again the next... didnt wanna clutter it up with pix but heres some links to some pix as i went along taking it apart...the main difference is just going to be u're intake Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 4 Parts 1 Parts 2 Gasket set i'd also change the timing belt/tensioner and waterpump while i was in there so murphey's law is reduced a lil bit later on
-
i donno if the 92's are like the 87s but pretty sure they are...theres 2 hidden (well not really hidden but u'll over look them or at least i did the 2 times i've pulled my heads one is on the front side of the driver side i think they're 12mm and 1 is on the back of the pass side on a flange off of the head into the block...if u hit all the head bolts and it still wont come thats whats holding u on more than likely... im sure ures has a lot more electrical connectors than mine did...i used a paint pen and marked all my eletricals on both connectors 1- however many and for vaccum i did v1 to however an coolants c1 to whatever just to make sure i didnt forget any and loose where any went... as for the alignment pins both of my kits from napa came with replacements although mine stuck in the block and were stubborn about comming out so i just left them and havent ever changed them i'd say haynes or chilton is plenty for the project and they sometimes give u some actual photo's where the FSM doesnt...im pretty sure i used haynes rather than chiltons for the during the procedure reference b/c i dont wanna get my FSM crudded up with greasy hands and what not
-
yea i let her sit for about a week or so...im gonna go ahead and try to finsih up everything else then come back to the starter...if i have problems i'll just stop thats what i've been doing and prob y im not done yet but hopefully everything goes alright today today went fairly alright...i got started late after running around for parts for 2 hrs since pdq doesnt run on sat....then i went to bass pro for like 3 hrs but came back about 4 and got the driveshafts in...tranny crossmemeber and an 1.5 hrs of grinding/air hammering 2 exhaust bolts off so i could get the down tubes seperated so they'd go around the tranny (put her back together a different order than taking it apart but all is well on today i left the starter for another day...if its not raining tomorrow im going to reindex the t bars and possibly go hunting at the junkyard for a starter to use to figure out what i need to do to make mine work cuze i think its gonna be about time to get more creative and a question that single lead is just the relay switch to tell the solenoid to kick on correct?
-
yea its the 1 with the spaded type connector...and i know it goes to the solenoid but i think i might have broken the tab off that it connected to b/c i dont remember it being hard to find last time i had it all unhooked and went to hook it back up....so if i know about where it goes and can locate where it broke off (if thats the case) i'll get out a soldering iron and see what happens...if not im while im scrounging for the windshield im gonna take a pic of the 87 and 88 they ahve in the yard and see if i can figure it out...its just turned into a PITA...im too close for all this stuff to be going wrong and i had every1 and their brother calling me cuze mom doesnt pay attention and i was like well the way my luck is going the motor will end up smoking or something and she interperted that as the truck runs but smokes so every1 was like man i heard u got the truck going heard it smokes that sucks....i was like WTF mom get the story strait as soon as i get the waterpump tomorrow and figure out where that wire goes she should with a big ole cross of the fingers crank up im thinking about video taping the crankup since it can go really good or really bad and either way might be a moment in history
-
and the saga continues...does any1 know where the post is for the single wire i've got the cable from the battery and the plug hooked up but i have a 3rd wire that i know had a pole to hook to...well i cant remember/find it and im guessing it broke off or something if some1 has a pic of their starter that would be awsome so i could try and see where it goes... hopefully tomorrow will be the final day but highly doubt it cuze things just seem to keep on getting worse and not going the right way
-
had some time to mess with the truck yest...tightened up the rocker arms changed valve cover seals finished bolting up the intake and hooking up all the vacum, fuel, electrical stuff...put the timing belt on and cleaned up the belt covers put them on...went to bolt up the fan and fan pulley...big no go the flange is smaller in diameter and the snout has to be like an inch shorter than my old 1 (i used the maxima waterpump since mine has those really long flanges and wouldnt work b/c of the way the timing belt cover is for this motor and i didnt wanna go pulling the cam gear and all that stuff to change it so its like mine so my question is does any1 know for sure if the D21 2 wheel drive waterpump has the same snout length as the 4x4 WD21...im gonna go to napa sometime when i find a ride but i did look online and found that the maxima WP and d21 4x2 were diff part #'s but looked the same so im hoping thats the case if not looks like im buying 1 for the wd21 4x4 and taking it to the shop to put on the band saw and take off the flanges note:they dont have a 4x2 wd21 listed for parts
-
did u try having the hood up and pull on the accelerator cable to get the rpms to rise so u maybe could see where its coming from
-
yea its like $265 for new glass and install...the used glass is $30 and $100 to install in my driveway
-
sweet well i appreciate the tips if im around this weekend (might have to go to virginia with the gf) im going to fetch a new windshield and see if i cant get some1 to put it on for me
-
hey neri is that solids works? if not what software did u use to draw that in? btw that looks sweet i want 1 haha
-
yea i was reading the FSM and figured if i can get the windshield out of 1 of those 2 pathys at the yard and let some1 put it in for me...granted if i break 1 then i have another to give a try at b/c they dont care if u break nething u only pay for what u get to the counter...but i was going to get some fishing leader wire and cut the seal then put the wire thru and run it around and have 2 or 3 buddies help me get it out...
-
yep...think im goin to pullapart to get a windshield they're like $30 and they have an 87 and an 88 over there
-
i went ahead and bought a new flywheel it was only like $60 and when i have time i'll resurface it at the shop and either sell it on ebay or keep it for later on...and yes i did the rear main seal as well as the pilot bushing and throwout bearing only if i had time to finish bolting down the intake and put the timing belt on this week then it'd be time to cross the fingers give her a crank and see what happens
