1. Nissan changed the tooth design for timing belts on VG30E engines from one with 133 square teeth to one with 133 round teeth. The change occurred during the 7/93 production month... although i have seen advertisement for modeles up to 1994 !?! Would that mean that prior to 7/1993 , belt is good for only 96000 km or 60000 miles (square teeth) and after 7/1993 the belt (round teeth) good for 160000 km or 100000 miles ? ...mine was changed 86000km or 53750 miles ago ... i imagine they have installed square teeth ...Have they ? or could they just have installed a round teeth one... would that be possible or not ? ... i am grinding my own 32 teeth now just trying to figure it out... since i drove 86000 km or 53750 miles since !!
2. Thank you for confirming Alkorahil... that is what i figured , after searching, although i was not sure 100%... i had fuel smells around the rear bumper before, wondering if it was the o-ring on the fuel pump, but now knowing that these hoses were unhooked and the fumes not goiing to the canister...this was the cause...of the occasional smell...
3. Voilà !! ...got my fingers tangle up on the keyboard
4. ...looking for rust with a flash light, actually going for a smoke i found , a rubber hose running along the back frame next to the fuel thank... with a clip on it...finished the cigarette , crawled under...found another rubber hose...checked in the Haynes... not accurate enough...looked in the downloaded Pathfinder Service Manuel (1994) , thanks to NPORA... got the design and more explaination. So i replug the hoses...I just want to make sure i did not plug them the wrong way since it seems to act like a non return valve for vapors...It does stand up next to the fuel thank...so i figured that the upper part goes to the thank and the lower part goes to the canister ? Right or wrong ? any opinion ? I figure i am not bad for a screw driver mechanic... should get a promotion non ? ...after spending 2 months in a garage and spending $1000 + at $69.00 a hour, on a Nissan fuel pump (the garage tried 3 jobber pumps before succeding)...but they forgot to replug that part ...!! here is a diagram of it ,if any help... p.s. You need Acrobat reader !! Pages_de_Emission_control_system.pdf
5. QUOTE(cstem @ Apr 7 2009, 06:25 AM) * Okay- well at least it sounds like you have a good attitude about this whole thing- and that will make the most important tool a mechanic ever uses function better- your brain. Keep your chin up. Do you have a manual? Any manual? If not get one asap. Comopression test procedure (quick and dirty- use the web to find a print version): -remove all spark plugs. -Dry test by installing guage and ensuring there are no leaks and its tight. Hold TBI butterflys wide open while doing test and test. -Wet test by adding a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder being tested. Add oil, test, move to next, add oil and test- for all. If the numbers come up- you may have just washed the cyl walls down or have bad rings (we already are in disbelief that all cyl fail at once remember). If numbers stay the same- either a valve is not closing (due to timing, bent valves or head gasket leak) or you have badly broken rings. -Just to confirm- -there is no water in the fuel correct? If suspicious, buy some water remover from the part store or your local meth producer (j/k- stay away from him) -the timing is correct? Improper timing can show as low compression too. -Can you rent, buy or borrow a radiator pressure tester? Leakage may indicate a blown head gasket or cracked head causing low compression. -A leak down tester is best (or if you have compressed air and a regulator- you can fab a leaker by using the compression test hose that threads into the motor. Remove the valve in the tube or it will not work. Apply about 6-8 psi of air to each cylinder while it is at top dead center. Listen for air to be escaping at the tailpipe, oil cap, bubbles at radiator cap and at throttle body. Air at tail or TBI indicates leakage past valves, at radiator -head or water jacket, and oil cap- rings or valve guides. -Battery- should not cuase the low compression but will cause a turn over- no start condition easily. -test the fuel pressure regulator per the manual you have. I honestly think you have a fuel issue. Low compression on so many cylinders at once and in such a short amount of time only really happens on catastrophic failures, improper use of compression tester o or head gasket (but usually only one bank of cyl) Be patient, methodical and write down results. When you have a doozy like this- the problem is usually pretty easy to find if you are not freaking out. Tell your parents what I did when I was 15 (a while ago!)- that working on your truck helps to build spatial thinking skills, troubleshooting and problem solving skills, perserverance and a sense of pride when you complete the job. These things keep kids off drugs and out of trouble (ask any youth counselour) and that is the advice your shop teacher should have gave you. Mine did 23 years ago! Good luck and hang in there.
6. ..when i mentionned ''you have put oil in each piston from the last compression test...'' i thought that you did a .'' -Wet test by adding a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder being tested. Add oil, test, move to next, add oil and test- for all.'' like cstem suggested you above, it would explain the blue smoke... or you did a ''-Dry test by installing gauge and ensuring there are no leaks and its tight. Hold TBI butterflys wide open while doing test and test... then it is burning oil and it would still have shown in the compression, you would have lost pressure on at least one piston !! ... relating to fuel in the oil pan, a mechanic told me one day that by cranking an engine while pressing the gaz pedal (on a electronic fuel injection), you end up with fuel in the oil pan, does it mean that oil would loose its viscosity and therefore decrease the ''étanchéité ''airtightness or proof quality? between the sleeve and rings of the pistons, thus the lost of compression ? a more mechanic inclined could certainely confirm or deny my thoughts on the subject and clarify yours ?! ... As i said...i am good at bread making... but mechanics is made out of 99% of sweating and 1% of genious (savoir faire)...
7. this might put my ignorance under the spot...but if you would have a blowned ring... it should have shown on your compression test ? you have put oil in each piston from the last compression test... ( hoping you didn't have any gaz in your oil pan )...you'd have enough to make french fries...guess i should go back to bread making...
8. thank you Kingman ...i did know for TBI...
9. ...not being a mechanic...i was wondering if your vehicle has Electronic Fuel Injection or carburator In the case of Electronic Fuel Injection, i have been told that if you ever pressed on the gaz pedal while trying to start your engine, ( happens in best families ) you'll end up with fuel in the oil pan, which would refer you to cstem comment just above '' would not start after running fine due to fuel washing down the sides of the cyl walls creating no seal at the oil ring. ''...but if it was the case, you would need to change your oil promptly... then do a compression test, afterwards...
10. ...strange...don't know that much about mechanics...but never heard of a sudden drop of even pressure on all pistons at the same time... within 2 days...anything special or weird occured during those two days ? weird sounds from the engine, or different behavior ? unccpathfinder has got a good point ...don't give up that fast until you made all tests... double check the work you have done on it !
11. ...moi aussi !!... 40 years of loyal smoking service... ashes and ashes and whatever ended in it ... not up in smoke... filters...so, shall i become...ashes... !!
12. i should have guessed have a good one...evening !
13. fskc ??? translate please...but have another beer first just whish i could help you...well at least holding your beer... anything ...that would encourage you bon courage !!
14. ...or maybe they forgot to put a snorkel on it ...can you see anything ? ... guest the telescope ain't working right
15. ... figured that doesn't matter which continent you choose : they're some brands that simply...make it..all the way !! ...in the desert :... don't worry, Renault was on it's own... http://www.teamdessoude.com/specific/formats/page.jsp?id=168 http://www.dakar.com/2009/DAK/LIVE/us/1400...sement/CGA.html http://www.dakar.com/2009/DAK/LIVE/us/1400/index.html ...in the Artic : http://www.arctictrucks.com/Pages/1335 seems like the Hulix from toyota is their biggest toy... ...and on mars : http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/mult...a/pia09105.html ... isn't in operation anymore... well... they should have tried our machines !!
16. thank you Beavis0076 and GrimGreg... for this valuable info ...
17. ...Just a little... it has 2 goods aspects : it cleans the valves and it makes just enough smoke to get the bugs and moskitos away for a while, depending of the season !
18. ...probably...i have seen tires deflating due to side pressure near the rim... ''is that what ,blowing out the bead'' means ?...but i do not quite understand '' is it for airing down "... is it deflate a tire like to 12psi to get more adherence in sand like ? if so i find the idea interesting...
19. i have friends that put tubes on their trucks ... i mean their tires( not for playing )... to go in woods... i wonder if it is still an advantage, considering the tires on the market ?
20. lol...well i do not think that this topic bears a flag, It does apply to all different regions of this continent... and every region is affected differently weatherwise... Two years ago, we had to evacuate the village because of a forest fire caused by the sparks of the brakes of a train. Living so far of big towns makes you think that your safer...but no... Meanwhile, in the same year, the national weather center in Canada, warned New Foundland that they could eventually be exposed to tsunami... That is new...we never heard that before... since large parts of the coast of the St-lawrence gulf is made of sand, considering that there are very few roads going north to get on rock platforms... it is a concern...even with a 4x4... roads here get washed out just about every year, by excess of rain...imagine a tsunami ! ... so i guess the north part is more concerned about natural disasters than...war... for now ! ...which unfortunately is not the case all over the continent...
21. ''if its worse and I don't make it then its darwinisim at its finest and it was my time to depart... from a Injanear'd Redneck university graduate ? mah !!! undoubtedly...survival instinct is still asleep i think !!
22. unccpathfinder !! unbeleivable...you are so quick... am i nuts or realistic ?...
23. Ask me not why i write this...but it is certainly not a joke from what i observe... i am 55 years old... i have travelled a lot since my 20's...right up the Artic and coast to coast and north and south of this continent and across...by boat, planes... But back on land, i always dreamed of a 4x4, which i do have today... for this simple reason...i have seen this world change...and not for the best... i figure that i might have a chance of survival to radical climate changes...just because i own a 4x4... a Path, although it is old... i know it can make it...probably longer than i can...lol But...Imagine yourself... in the middle of the night, any time, doens't matter where you live... you have to get out of your house in a hurry... you have to run for your life...what do you do ? are you ready ? everything happens in seconds...You have to save your family...you have to stay alive... hey we are not talking about ''birds '' of Alfred Hichkock...we are far further now... ...flood, earthquake, fire, volcano,Tsunami...name it... you got it all in the states lately !!... first step, if possible, is to escape...right ? how ? one option is your vehicule... are you ready for survival ? fuel capacity, food, first emergency kit, clothing, blankets, food, water, tools... oh yes i read about the topics of ''what do you carry along'' ...Have you ever thought that it could be for more than a little ride in the bushies ? Imagine you have to go for a month ? what would you think of carrying then, for your family and the Path ? Imagine you have to survive longer than a month !! just imagine that you cannot come back to where you live, there is no come back...you are the headlight of what is next !! Do you know what is eatable in the woods, and what is not ? have you ever thought of the name of plants and their medicinal properties since all pharmatical medicine are directly produced from those plants...i think that is what survival is all about...don't worry...i am not a grass hopper... i thouth of eatable meat...and rats are part of the menu... LOL As they say, Better be prepared than... sorry... ... I just have a tendency to start to understand ''the theory of chaos...'' and i know it's at work... Now in the house, I have always lots flour to make bread...yes i make my own bread...after the road was cut of for a week...just in case. Just imagine in plastic containers what you would like to carry in the path if you go camping for more than a month...countless of the perpective of any disaster... P.S. Mind you : you don't have to carry everything in your truck...until...it ever happens... but if ready, it takes only few minutes to get it aboard and fly... all to say... why i rely so much on my old Path...it may be just ''stock'' or ''oem'' as you guys say... but i know what it's been through... and can go through...
24. ah oui j'oubliais !! what means '' yuppers'' ? is it an obvious yup ?, meaning yes ? you know i am from different ...language and there are so many subtilities...and subtitles in languages... it's like ''mate'' when you read Aussies forum...well, i use to work on ships, and we called officers as ''mate'... hit me with a ...wrench ...i'm use to it !!
25. i totally agree, but as long as you know what you're doing, on my part it is an adventure, i mean mechanically talking...it's a triller... i know computers and and i am inclined mecanically... but the symbiose of those two is quite complexe... but i imagine that at a certain point you become...intuitive...heu...which one is first ?
