  1. Look here: Thinking of buying this LCD

and here: Plasma or LCD TV?

Both are topics on the CarTalkCanada forum that really get into the technology (sort of weird for an automotive forum but there is lots of neat topics in the Off Topic section, like here). You will find lots of dsicussion about the pros and cons of all tyopes of TV's.

Also this topic: Alright finally got my TVs, this from the forum admin.

BTW, I just helped my dad buy a 40" LCD by Samsung. It is very nice and has no glare, a big issue for him as the room the TV is in has windows on three sides, it is a sun room so the walls are windows.

  2. Probably oxygenated gas or whatever they do to gas during the winter.

I've never heard of such a thing.

Yup, get it here in the winter. We all know when the "winter" gas comes into town, our fuel consumption goes up. Probably depends on what part of the country you are in, I doubt that the "winter" gas in Vancouver or Victoria is as oxygenated as it is here in the interior. Just a thought anyway.

  3. Not sure on the basket....

The tire carrier, best of luck. They were fairly rare on the R50's. Either fab one up with a rear bumper, or hit the scrap yard, or dealer. I don't believe anyone here has retrofitted a carrier to a previously non-carrier equipped model, so I'm not sure if there's any braces in the rear pillar that you'll need.

Funny thing is that the factory service manual for my 02 shows a rear tire carrier and all its parts.

But as noted, very rare to actually find one on this style of Pathfinder.

  4. So the motor on the Pathfinder has been ticking for around 8,000 km. My shop in town told me to get it diagnosed at a dealer, which I finally did today. They say it is a lifter (that is what my mechanic thought too). All they did was add some Kleen Flow valve oil additive stuff and suggested doing this for the next 2-3 oil changes. If the noise does not go away after that, then it will be time to get into the motor and see what is up.

I of course want to bring this to the well versed techs here at NPORA and see what you think. Is the dealers suggestion reasonable? Anything else?

More info: 135,758 km; full synthetic oil since 100,000 km, changed every 5,000 km; no codes showing; no engine drivability issues. Except for the noise, the motor has not been this good for as long as I have owned it

    Have at it :hide:

  5. So, I have to replace the headlight units on my Pathy (02) as the original ones are beyond repair from some sort of discolouration and the light output is significantly impacted, notably on low beams. I have tried lots of things, such as polishing the units, talking with a body shop, etc all to no avail.

I have the new ones, any tips/things to watch out for when I get to doing the replacements?

    Thanks.

  6. Weird....she was seeing it, then I logged on, read this thread, and I couldn't see it. Maybe something was in her cache? I saw it on her screen as well, so we can rule out drunkeness!!

I thought she may have been referring to this, in a sarcastic sort of way knowing how she likes the Leafs:

  7. Trainman,

Correct on the strut suspension up front. There is though a stabilizer/torsion bar connecting the 2 wheels. Hard to put it under load. I was hoping someone else out there had an 04 with the same symptoms.

    Regards,

    Zee

Check out the replies on CarTalkCanada, the sway bars are the consensus there. articsteve figures about $35 per side for aftermarket and $80 from the dealer.

  8. Interesting campaign that my wife's employer is endorsing:

ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE."

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

  9. Our 3.3L gets around 550kms before the light comes on, its a 2000 5 speed, so that might have something to do with it. I figure if im good on her i can get about 700 km's to a tank, 75 of those clicks being after the light comes on.

Based on what I have calculated and the size of the tank, I figure I could go to about 700 km as well before it runs dry. But I am not going to try it

  10. I usually get 400 kilometers (250 miles) per tank.

That's exactly what I get, sometimes a bit higher when I travel to Connecticut on the highway the entire time. Next time you fill, divide total miles (km's) traveled on that tank by how many gallons (liters) it takes to refill it (read: Trainman :D )

As has been discussed in depth a few times, the gas gauge on Pathfinders can be rather deceiving. Based on what my gauge shows me, I would be around the same as well, maybe a bit more. But the fuel put in really tells the tale. My gauge will say I have only 1/4 tank left (ie 60l consumed) but all I can get in will be a little less than 50l. At the 1/2 tank (40l) all I get in is just over 30l. Based on actual consumption, I can get an easy 600 km per tank.

  11. I picked up the used 2004 Chinook version in Feb, and shortly thereafter began to hear a clunk from the front end. Only seems to happen on the crappy Montreal roads, which for me means all the time ;D

Most noticeable at low speeds going over depressions in the road. I think it might be a torsion bar bushing, but hard to verify.

Anyone out there see the same thing?

The 04's do not have torsion bars, they are coil springs front and back.

May be a bushing, those Quebec roads can be rather hard on cars I hear

  12. As has been posted before, the only true way to calculate gas mileage is to record kms/miles driven and fuel put into the tank, then do the calculation.

Over the time I have had the my 02 (almost 80,000 kms) I have been averaging around 24-26 mpg on the highway (not correcting the odo reading for the larger tires).

It really depends on how you drive, it can get decent mileage for what it is.

  13. I've done around 60-70 kms and still put in less than 70l of fuel. The light and gauge are totally wonky, at least its on the safe side :aok: The gauge will show 1/2 tank but I can only get in around 30-32l, just under the 1/4 mark gets 50l. Go figure.

The other point to remember is that it is not a good thing to run the tank dry, the fuel pump relies on the fuel to keep it cool and you also risk uptaking any sediment that may be in the bottom of the tank. Not good for the injectors if it gets that far.

  14. So I took a look at my 3.5: it is on the drivers side, it appears to be under the AC pump, so quite far forward but with the skids on, it is hard to see the exact spot.

    WRONG:

Here it is, from the service manual:

    BlockHeater.jpg

Looks like there may be 2 of them, one on each side. The drivers side is at the rear.

  15. I will take a look in the morning to see where it goes.

I had to find the cord and uncoil it, it had never been used as the beast was from Vancouver. Must have been quite the shock when 1 month after I bought it, it was in -34 temps.

  16. Mine has the same problem. I figured it wasn't the motor, since all the windows do it, and last year at -40 the window would come up about 6 inches, slow down and go back down. Even if I pulled on it, it would trigger the anti-pinch and go back in. I was pissed... Try driving 100km/h for 10Km at -40.... I pulled it inside and let it warm up... Silicone spray eh? I'm on my way to buy some! What about dry graphite?
