  1. The forestry map are usually out-of-date (I know, I work in forestry and used to know a lot of the roads on the south end/east side of the Island). Get this instead:

I have most of the interior ones and they are pretty good.

This is their web site, lots of info here: Backroad Mapbooks

  2. Fair dinkum, yep, that horrid swear word again, some of you lot need to go and find a sense of humour. If you can't find one please buy one.

And if you want to be pedantic trainman, show me the letter to the editor that he wrote apologising for pointing out incorrect sentence structure amongst other things. I certainly did see it. You seem to have though??? No good him saying sorry to us. He didn't set out to correct us did he?

Get over yourselves FFS. Seems the only one to "get it" was 88 himself. Hats off to him for being one of a few here that can see past their own belligerence.

Here is how I saw this whole thing:

88 reads a review by CanadianDriver (a web based automotive magazine that deals primarily with Canadian content or issues of Canadian interest) of used 90-95 Pathfinders and believes it is inaccurate in several ways. He sends them an e-mail noting the issues in detail. He gets a reply back from CD politely pointing out that as a Canadian web site, they review Canadian models. So 88 then asks Canadian NPORA members if we had ever had 2wd Pathfinders.

As good forum members, we Canadians were happy to let 88 know that we do indeed get different vehicles than the US. That should be the end of the story. But it gets a second life....

Your posted a definition of a "rant":

    From Wikipedia...

"A rant is a widespread and distinctive phenomenon of emotional speech or writing in the form of a series of complaints or attacks, about a topic of interest, many times political in nature. Rarely, rants express great praise, defending an idea or a person from attack."

Now look at the original post and compare. :puterpunch:

88's original post does not meet your definition as it is not a "series of complaints", it was one complaint that was dealt with.

So 88's post is not a rant, so 88 has nothing to apologize for, hence my post saying just that.

But your series of posts on this topic, plus the personal jab at me and others (I will let the "pedantic" comment slide, I am an auditor and can get caught up in little details) makes you the one who is ranting.

Anyway, I am done, the turkey will be in the oven tomorrow for a nice early Thanksgiving. Hope you have a good one too, Vsicks or whatever you celebrate down under in October. I understand the British do not celebrate Thanksgiving at all, maybe it is just a NA thing?

  3. Last time I went Renfrew to Cowichan was in my 510 so unless the road has gotten really bad, it will not be much of a challenge for a Pathfinder.

Unfortunately it has been a few years since I drove any of the back roads on the Island, so I can not offer any options. I do get back once in awhile to see my Dad in Oak Bay and for the odd bit of work but no wheeling time I'm afraid.

have fun and keep us posted on what you find.

  4. *snic* Why yes, yes it is. Sorry for the unjustified rant, all.

    ^^^

    (apology)

I did not read it as such, just someone who was trying, based on their experience, to make a good review even better. And after the facts of the Canadian market were pointed out, he graciously acknowledged that he, in fact, did not know it all. We all learned something from this I hope. No need for 88 to apologize for anything.

See, I don't know it all. Mwuahahaha.
  5. Yep, as noted, NO 2wd drive Pathfinders of any generation in Canada, W or R series, 2 or 4 door.

Also different trim levels as well, so the differences mentioned in the article and 88's comments are probably both true, depending on what side of the border you are on.

I also thought it was a polite reply from CD and good comments from 88.

PS: Frame rust is not an issue in Western Canada but due to long distances between gas stations, fuel tank size could be. We have lots of Check Your Fuel Next Service xxx km signs here

  6. As noted, really good news you are OK (how bad is the person who hit you?).

Looks like the beast took some punishment and did what is was designed to: protect you.

Almost looks like you got nailed in the right/rear, then spun and got hit again in the middle of the left side. No rollover anyway.

  7. I wonder what kind of reception you will get here. I contributed a few posts to your topic at CarTalkCanada back last summer (and one today to bring back up from the dead  ), glad to see you are making strides in the numbers (5,000 to 18,000 in a year and a bit by the looks of it).

I may sign the Pathy up, will wait and see a bit.

  8. ... The corrosion is caused by salt on the roads from states that have heavy snowfall and it is only on these years of pathys because they were not adequetly coated with rust preventatives. The recall doesn't start until November and the states that are include are:

Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

    ....

So I guess we do not get enough snow here in Canada to worry about this

    JeepInSnow.jpg

The TC (Trans Canada Highway, our national coast to coast piece of asphalt) after a bit of the white stuff.

  9. For future reference, GL-5 is POSI/LSD safe and MT-1 is industrial HD grade. The oil is fine, I need change nothing, and I'll try the lifted wheel trick sometime soon.

Thanks for the update as I am due for a service and was wondering if I should go syn on the diffs as well as the trannie/all mode transfer case. Now I know what to use in the diff

  10. I know NC doesnt require reverse lights...

he has turn signals...look on either side of the radiator...vertically...

    Ahhh. Hidden turn signals!

That truck would not be street legal in BC without flares to cover the width of the wheels, also the mods would require an engineers stamp of approval that they do not significantly alter the trucks safety devices. Would not stop him from driving it till stopped by the police though.

  11. Wow, averaging 12.7L/100km is good, I'm around 15.2L/100km if I remember correctly (I don't have my spreadsheet infront of me). I do have a tendency to be heavy footed though :)

This is after approx. 9000km of tracking.

I run regular gas, have auto tranny, and have 30" MTR's.

Now that I installed the manual hubs I'm hoping I'll notice a slight decrease in consumption.

I use cruise as much as I can (really helps) and have a light foot. The kms I posted does not take into account the 3% difference in the odometer from the larger tires I run, so it is even a bit better (adjusted kms would be 11,300).

Because I use my truck for work, I keep pretty good records (got to keep Revenue Canada happy) so have a pretty good idea on fuel use.

  12. So, for the last almost 11,000 km I have been using premium fuel (91 octane) in the Pathfinder even though it is only "recommended", not required.

    I have noted the following:

I have had a "battle" with the Service Engine Soon Light (SESL) or check engine light. I could not get more than 2-3,000 km without it coming on, always for either a valve timing and/or a idle speed issue. The light went out 400 km after I switched to the premium fuel and has not been on since. I have even tried to provoke the SESL without any luck

Performance is better, notably on hills (and hills would be a trigger for the SESL too). Less need for gearing down as on regular gas.

Fuel consumption: strange here, at lower speed highways (90-100 kph limits) there is no change but at higher speed limits (110) fuel economy has increased and is the same as the lower speed. Before, there was a noticeable drop in economy at speeds over 100 kph. Looking at the spreadsheet, you can not tell what speed highway was being driven (but you can still tell the off-road stuff). Lots of MPG in the 24-26 range (imperial)

    The facts:

Km driven: 10,980 (includes all types: highway, urban, off-road)

    Liters used: 1,394.2

I think I will keep at it and see what happens over the entire year, need some winter driving experience in my data set.

    EDIT: and still waiting........................

EDIT No 2: I bet we do not get our activation, that is why there are no posts on the site despite all the "users".

Wonder if it is a scam to get valid e-mails? Good thing I have an e-mail just for this type of junk site.

Maybe it was a scam then?

Oh well, another good forum bites the dust, I guess I'll just have to stay around here

  14. I have been running Quaker State 10W-30 for about a year (or roughly 30,000 km) with no issues. I have not noted any change in fuel consumption or power but it does start in about half the time it used to.

I may try syn for the trannie and transfer case at its next service but the quoted cost sort of puts me off (over $200 just for the oil?). Will be using a different shop than the last few times, maybe the price will be better

  15. Wow, what a neat idea. Well done to all who participated.

Bullied student tickled pink by schoolmates' T-shirt campaign

Last Updated: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 | 11:25 PM ET

    CBC News

Two Nova Scotia students are being praised across North America for the unique way they turned the tide against a fellow student bullied for wearing pink.

The victim — a Grade 9 boy at Central Kings Rural High School in the small community of Cambridge — wore a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up, students said.

Two Grade 12 students — David Shepherd and Travis Price — heard the news and decided to take action.

"I just figured enough was enough," said Shepherd.

They went to a nearby discount store and bought 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day.

    'Sea of pink' support

Then the two went online to e-mail classmates to get them on board with their anti-bullying cause that they dubbed a "sea of pink."

But a tsunami of support poured in the next day.

Not only were dozens of students outfitted with the discount tees, but hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some head-to-toe.

When the bullied student, who has never been identified, walked into school to see his fellow students decked out in pink, some of his classmates said it was a powerful moment. He may have even blushed a little.

"Definitely it looked like there was a big weight lifted off his shoulders. He went from looking right depressed to being as happy as can be," said Shepherd.

And there's been nary a peep from the bullies since, which Shepherd says just goes to show what a little activism will do.

"If you can get more people against them … to show that we're not going to put up with it and support each other, then they're not as big as a group as they think are," he says.

The students' "sea of pink" campaign did not go unnoticed outside the province. U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres expressed interest in their story, and other schools are talking about holding their own "pink day."

"It's been totally overwhelming for us. I mean we're just two local boys and I mean we're getting calls from like Alaska and e-mails. It's just phenomenal the support that we've gotten from across the globe," said Price.

The school principal, understandably, was flush with pride.

"You're always hearing about the youth of the world and how bad things are. Well, they're not that bad," said Stephen Pearl.

  16. The "accuracy" of the R50 gas gauges is somewhat suspect. It drive my wife nuts when she sees the gauge at the 1/4 mark but I know it will only take about 45l. When the low fuel light comes on, I can barely get 60l into the 79l tank. 1/2 gets me about 30l. Go figure.
