So I'm laying in bed last night thinking (the curse of the nerd...) and thought it would be fantastic to put a switch in my electric cooling fan circuit that shuts it off when I hit about 30 mph, and back on when I slow down below 30. Do I need it? No, but hey, it would be so slick... And it would be good for others who aren't as careful as I am.

 

Anybody have any ideas?

 

(This is for analog speedo '88)

Get the ball rolling time:

The two I thought of last night:

- Tap into the cruise control output so the fan shuts off when cruise is activated (very easy, but only a partial solution)

- A lever arm switch mounted to the tranny case that is depressed by the shift lever when 5th gear is selected so fan is shut off when up to 5th gear speeds. (More work, but best I've come up with so far)

ill give it to ya, that does sound pretty sweet.

 

since i have the auto-tragic pathy, the cruise option is what i would have to have.....sniff sniff, oh how i wish i woulda held off for a manual tranny.....

If you had a real Pathy (read 4 door... :P) of the better vintage (read 94-95) you'd have an electronic speedo and the solution would be simple... ;)

 

The only thing I can think of is an optical sensor (rpm meter style) that is set up on a front wheel somewhere. Once RPM reaches a defined value, power to the fan is bypassed. You know far more that i do about this stuff so I think you can take it from here...

Oh, how about an electronic wind speed gauge mounted up front ?? You don't have to be doing 30, just the air flow... ;)

put a light trip switch in the back of ure gages...so when the speedo passes 30 mph it shuts it off then when it comes back down it turns it back off or maybe a contact on the needle with a contact track all the way up to 30 mph but nothing after so while it connects (below 30 mph) its on and over u have a break in the circuit and its off...

find some sort of viscous or air lock type fan clutch and use that
