My uncle put Sheet vinyl in the back of his Astro van. Super resilliant, and easy to clean. Just rip out the old carpet, prep the surface so its smooth and find a place that sells Linolium, the right glue, and have at 'er. If you do it properly, it wont look too bad at all. But i'd stick with carpet if you ever want to sell it again. It looks better, plus it helps with road noise.

Maybe make a wooden "box" liner to slide in and out when you need it.

Perhaps I should be asking: Why does it get so dirty in the first place?

Why remove the carpet anyways? You can shampoo it at many car washes and cover it if you anticipate dirty cargo. If its already thrashed and dirty... well, then, cover whatever you put back there so you don't get IT dirty. Point being, if you want to use it as a truck, don't be afraid to get it dirty like a truck. :allclean:

One thing that works well and is cheap is rubber roofing material. My old foreman used it in the back of his Rodeo and it worked great, the light grey even matched his interior (not that his interior was nice at all).

I redid mine with grey rubber-backed indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. It almost looks like the material they use to cover sub boxes. Cost about $35 and I just used the old carpet as a template to rough fit it then trimmed it to fit once I installed it.

That actually is what I covered my sub box with. It matches the stock grey in mine fairly well. Its pretty durable and high quality stuff, and you could cover the whole back end pretty cheap.
