Another Problem

I have had my Pathy now for a while, for those of you who do not know it is a '95 XE. Every morning when I go out and sit down in the drivers seat I hear a loud popping noise coming from what seems to be just the front end. At first I thought this was connected to that suspension problem that is talked about when I have my wheels turned and I go over a bump, when I do do that I hear another popping noise.

Are these related?

What can I do about them?

pop, pop, pop when you start it up then it goes away once she has warmed up???

Exhaust Header Leak :X

Very common for all of us....

Broken header studs typically is the cause...

Solution:

Pull exhaust manifold remove and replace all of the Studs... Put it back together stock.. Thorley's or Pacemaker headers...

There are several threads on this please do a search on Thorley, or Pacesetter...

I don't think that's what Teen was talking about Casey.....but maybe I'm wrong....

Teen, for these types of issues, it's good to have someone bounce the front end up and down, while you check for play, or noises. My guess in this case could be sway bar links on the lower control arm.

I believe Simon has the right approach, and the possible culprit. Especially when it is cold and depending on how old and crapped up your shocks are, it may be stiction of the piston/shaft. I have witnessed this before. Regardless, have your head under the front end and have someone of same or greater mass hop in. Go from there...

Do you own a manual yet ? Get one. Chiltons has exploded views of things (including the front end) with labels. Spend 15 minutes under the truck while looking at the diagram and you will have a detailed understanding of what things are and basically how they work. ;)

This is a long shot, but check your steering stops. The little bolts that rub on the frame plate thingy so you can only turn so far before you wreck you CV's. The nylon caps come off and when have your wheel turned a fair bit and Start to move, stop, or hit a bump, they will Pop and make cracking or grinding noises depending on the amount of friction. Its a very distinct metal on metal noise. Mine makes a loud pop when they need some grease and I got around turns and the suspension moves at all.

also i've never experienced it (unless I was offroading and covered in mud, and let it dry), but a good buddy of mine says when tortion bars are muddy or whatever, they will squeak and pop.

Hope that narrows things down for you.

Get a Pathfinder specific one. There are also electronic copies of the FSM floating around... Ask REAL nice, and someone may send you a copy. ;)
