"It turned out only 3 made that climb all weekend and many destroyed the rigs there. Bob Standage didn't roll, but spun in the air and landed hard on the flat ground. He hit so hard that he hit his helmet on his steering wheel (breaking the helmet and denting the wheel), it knocked him out and his foot was wide open on the throttle. He ran over one guy from Skunkworks, ran over Charley Milchners rig with him in it and his spotter diving under it, and ended up hitting Joel Randal's rig before it slowed down enough to grab the kill switch. It's amazing no one was killed. No one was hurt seriously, but the guy I'm sure will be sore for a while. It did mess Joel's rig up, breaking 2 front links and an air shock and bending lots of tubes."

Was that at the Salt Lake facility? Guess they'll be mandating longer tethers on the kill switches now.

As every one has mentioned, those are some lucky people. it always amazes me how close some people feel they need to be. I mean "anything" can happen.. and with the HP those rigs are toting, it's not to be taken lightly.

Saw that a few weeks ago. I think he shoud be fined for not wearing his harness correctley. He did a lot of damage to other buggies not to mention the 2 people he ran over. Lucky for him his foot was not hard to the floor. If he had been flat out, he would have killed people.

 

 

This is how we race in OZ. Not 4wd but just as good a smash that you'd see anywhere.

I bet his foot really was most of the way to the floor, remember how low-geared those things are...and how does slo-mo wall-crawling offroading compare to road-track racing at high speeds? :confused:

 

Man, that Porsche took a beating. At least it rolled over the rounded roof and hood a couple of times before it impacted really hard on the rear axle like it did, that may have wasted a bit of energy and saved the driver from worse injury or something.

There was a crash the next day in the same spot involving a V8 super car (race class). It was almost identical to the VW.

 

As for the buggy, if his foot was flat to the floor or just about, you would have 1, heard it and 2 he would have climbed everything in his path. Who cares at the end of the day anyway, no one was hurt badley and that's the main thing.

Most guys use transverse 4cyl engines in buggys like that. The mount them so the outputs of the transaxel run to the front and rear axels. They don't scream like a V-8.
