Baker95pathy
New timing belt but won't start
Baker95pathy
I just bought a 95 nissan pathfinder. It has set for 4 months. The guy said he the timing belt broke he replaced it but it would not start. I checked and the timing was not set correctly. I set it correctly but it still won't start. The engine seems to be turning slow to me. I'm getting fire and I'm pretty sure I'm getting fuel because when I pulled out a plug it smelled like gas. Can someone please help me. Citron
When you say timing was not set correctly, do you mean ignition timing or cam timing? Have you checked compression? If the timing belt broke it is likely you have internal damage. Compression test would be a good place to start to check for valve issues.
Slartibartfast
^+1, broken timing belt almost always means valve damage on these. And depending on how far out the timing was, it may have damaged the other valves trying to start before you fixed the timing. Compression test is your friend. Baker95pathy
Ok I do not have a way to test compression but when I try to start it with the breather off it occasionally blows a flame out the breather.
ScottyB
Is the cam out one revolution? I have other engines where the cam turns twice for each crank revolution.
Baker95pathy
Should the cams be hard to turn. My crank is a little tough to turn but that's normal what about the cams.

Citron
Yes, when you turn the cams you are compressing the valve springs and that takes some force. However, don't turn the cams if the timing belt isn't on because the valves will contact the piston if the crank isn't moving. I guess I am having trouble following what exactly is going on. Please explain everything clearly. What condition is the engine in now? Is the timing belt on or off? Is anything apart? What procedure did you use to set the timing correctly? onespiritbrain
You probably don't have top dead center on the compression stroke. If your blowing fire out of the intake then your timing is set at 180deg and you will need to reset everything.. ScottyB
Sorry, I only pretend to be a mechanic on my own vehicles. While there may be valve damage, the backfire makes it sound like he's 180 out to me. Perhaps he got lucky that way.
Baker95pathy
Ok I counted the teeth on the belt and I was 1 off on top fixed that. Now I'm ganna check the ignition timing again to see where I'm at.
Baker95pathy
Ok all timing is correct but it still won't start. It will almost start but then it just starts turning slow again. Still has a little back fire but no flame out the breather anymore. I'm stuck.

Citron
And you were at TDC on compression stroke on #1 cylinder when you set the cam timing?

onespiritbrain
I'm sorry man but it sounds like the engine may have suffered damage when the timing belt broke on the PO. You will need to do a compression test. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited July 18, 2017 by onespiritbrain
Baker95pathy
Ok well I turned the engine about 10 to 12 times by hand and my marks on the belt and the gears are different every time. Shouldn't they line back up after a few rounds.

adamzan
It takes quite a few turns for it to line up again. If you are confident the belt is on properly, move on to the ignition timing. It would run a tooth off, not well, but it would run. Was the distributor removed (you shouldn't ever need to unless replacing it)? Bring the engine back to TDC and reset the distributor as well so its pointing at plug wire #1.
Baker95pathy
I think I have a bent valve or more than 1. I'm ganna check compression to be sure but probably ganna get knew heads. But should I rebuild the ones I have or get new or get some off of a wrecked junker.

pathykline92
I've seen new sets of valves for under $100.00 and head gasket set for about the same but the labor to remove and install the heads I'm not sure about.
adamzan
Could go the JY route... That's probably what I'd do to be honest.
