drennan_1
I just bought a 92 Pathfinder SE. After I drive for a while on the freeway, it feels like the rear differential is locked when I get off the freeway and try to turn. It only happens after I have been on the freeway and doesn't do it when it has been sitting for a while. Any idea what's wrong?
flnl
Are you sure you're in 4x2?
drennan_1
I'm pretty sure ... unless the 4wd isn't disengaging. The lever is all the way in the forward position, the 4x4 indicator light is off and I am sure I have driven far enough in reverse to disengage the 4x4 since I last had it in 4WD. It seems like I would experience the problem all the time if it was stuck in 4wd though .... wouldn't it?
oilman
check the fluid level in the rear diff. or better yet drain it and replace it, make sure you use the right fluid, look in your manual for the specs, LSDs need special gear oil.
TrailChaser
The previous owner might have installed a lock right...
88pathoffroad
I vote for fluid level or dragging rear brakes.
drennan_1
Lock right installed by a previous owner would be nice. Pretty unlikely though considering the lack of any other upgrades or any signs of off road use. I'll change the fluid. Sounds like the most likely cause. Thanks. drennan_1
Turns out it was the rear differential fluid. I replaced it and it runs perfectly.
