Key Reminder Relay

I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder LE. My problem is that when the truck is off, the door is open, and the key is in the ignition there is no chime or "dinging noise". Also, when the truck is off and the headlights are on the chime does not work. I know some people go through the trouble to get rid of that annoying noise. But when I am driving during the day when you need your lights on say in rain or fog. I sometimes stop somewhere and get out and without that dinging noise I leave my lights on. I know the switch in the door jam works. I have removed the driver's side kick panel removed the chime and replaced it with one I no that works out of a D21 hardbody and no dinging noise.

A few weeks ago (you can see my older posts) I had electrical issues with my a/c. Without the use of the factory service manual I could have not fixed it on my own. Looking on the EL section of the fsm on page 88 on the lower left is a relay #336m. This is the key reminder relay. Well I wanted to get a new one to see if that would fix my chime problem. I got on the web and went to the usual places like autozone, advance auto parts, napa, rock auto and could not find it anywhere. I have googled and googled the part with no success. I don't know if the relay fits on any other nissan models of the same year (1994). I could go to the Nissan dealership. But I have went their before searching for parts and either they couldn't get parts for a twenty year old truck, or they would have to order one and hope it was the right part. I could also go to a salvage yard, but I would prefer any electrical part to be new. On the top of the relay it says nissan 12v 5a. It has other #'s and even a picture on the top, but I can't even type that. The relay has 5 tips. The two perfectly apart from one another say one and two. The one in the middle says three. The ones that are slightly staggered a part from one another say four and five. Here are some pics of the relay.

Anyone have any idea where I could buy this relay. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe Rob (Alkorahil) can source one.

Have you tried testing it? Three switched pins sounds like it's got a normally open and a normally closed, so be careful you don't put power to the normally closed instead of the coil.

If it's not the relay, it could well be that a previous owner got as tired of that little beeping SOB as I did and cut a wire somewhere.

Thanks for the response. No I have not tested it b/c I really don't know how to do it. Not much of an electrical "guru". I have a 12v testing light and that is about it.

Thanks,

OK, I found a part # for the relay. This particular website gives part# 25230-79910. I run the part through the actual Nissan parts website for a 94 Nissan pathfinder and it comes back as "key reminder relay" with over a $20.00 price and no picture. I google the part # and it comes back as 1989-1994 Nissan maxima anti-theft relay. None of the websites give a picture. So, I don't know if I am purchasing the right part or not. Guess I will end up at the Nissan Dealership.

that is indeed a relay P/N. The full number or last 5 of that number should be printed on the side of the relay itself if you pull it out. There are only a few different types of relays Nissan used back then. They are used all over the vehicles for different purposes based on power required. This particular one was used on Maxima, Pathfinder, Hardbody, Sentra during the 90's for different purposes.

I do show this is the key reminder relay for a WD21 and is still available from Nissan.

P/N 25230-79910

DESCRIPTION: RELAY 12V

$17.79 (NISSAN LIST: $23.72)

Thanks, for the reply. Where did you find that price for that relay. I will also give you an update on what I have done since my last post. I went to my local Nissan Dealer. Parts guy found it only when I gave him the part #. He said he did not have one (well I knew that), but he could not show me a picture of the relay either. Next, I went to the local salvage yard (which is a pretty big one in this area). The guy took me to four Nissan Pathfinders ranging in date from 93-95. Not a one had a place for a relay like mine. I have the relay right here and unless they changed the part # the numbers on this one says 422N. But that is the only relay I found in that area of the wiring diagram. I don't know if since mine is a LE that it might have something else to do with the key reminder like anti-theft or something. B/C none of the Pathfinders I looked at yesterday were LE and none of them had a place for that relay.

Now what do I do?

Maybe yours is like my 94. Mine has a "dinger" for the key in and light reminder, but when you turn it on it beeps for the seatbelt warning. My 95 just beeps for everything. Have you tested the relay yet? Maybe I could take a look at mine and see what it's supposed to do, where is it, exactly?

No don't go tearing your rig up. Mine has a "diner" also. It is below the seat belt diode behind the kick panel on the driver's side. That is what I thought was wrong with it at first. But I took one that I know "used" to work out of my Dad's old 86 1/2 (first hardbodys made) and it looked just like the one in my pathfinder and it plugged right in. But it did not "ding". But I was at advance auto parts getting an a/c relay for my Pathfinder a few weeks ago and I asked the parts guy if they sold the "dinger". He looked it up and said no it was probably a dealer part. But his computer dis say there were differences between the chimes. He said some were made for Pathfinders that had alarms and different ones made for those that didn't have alarms. When I was going through the Pathfinders at the salvage yard I was going to get the chime, but either someone had already got them or the others were exposed to water and were all rusted.

How do you test the relay? I may not even have the right relay. But looking at the wiring diagram in the fsm I am pretty sure I have the right one. After the salvage yard visit I looked at the 95 (mine is a 94) diagram and it show it on that diagram as well. The warning beep for the key and headlights work in my 97 Nissan hardbody 4x4. But it doesn't even have the chime part. Something else makes it beep. The relay may not even be the problem. It just may be a bad "dinger.

I found some of the relays on ebay going by the part#. They show up close pics and the relays are identical to mine. Every one of the ebay sites state it is a standard Nissan antitheft relay and they were a little on the expensive side. My next move is to find a new chime ("dinger").

I work at a Nissan dealer. I have the parts cataloge right here in front of me. :)

XE Pathfinders and Hardbody trucks will not have the chime. SE/LE Pathfinders from 94-95 and SE Hardbody trucks from 93-97 will have it.

I have just about given up on this project. I was putting things together a few hours ago and I said what the heck I will try a little harder. The chime assembly looks brand new. You have a top square piece and a bottom one. I took the bottom piece a part and there is something like a coil in the middle and on each side is two small metal pieces held together with two small pieces of rubber on each end. I assume this part makes the dinging noise. Well the hooks that hold the metal pieces attach to were a little rusted on one side so I sanded the rust off. I took the plastic cap of the top square and it is just a circuit board with the wires attached. The whole thing looked new. The Pathfinder has 80,000 original miles on it. I took a test light to the plug that fits into the chime and I could not get the test light to light up. There are two wires to the plug. A green one with grey dots and a brown one with either a white or yellow strip, but they go into that massive set of wires that are wrapped up. So, I don't know if the chime is getting power, if the chime is broke, or if that relay has anything to do with it.

At this point I really don't care I tried my best. I just like for things to work. But dinging is not work all of this.

Lucky, Lucky working at a Nissan Dealership. I did look the chime up online at the genuine Nissan parts store. Your right certain years chime assemblies go to certain Pathfinders. I read where the one I would be looking for Nissan doesn't make anymore. Maybe one day I can find some of this stuff on ebay.

Thanks
