smokersteve
I got a 93 5 spd pathfinder. I'm going to change the fluid using amsoil. I know you need to use 5.1 L I plan on taking out the gearshift so I can get it all in. Can I pour all 5.1 L through the gearshift or do I need to fill it from the fill hole first then top it off through the gearshift?
fast5speed
You can put all of it through the gear shifter. Be very gentle when trying to take out the drain plug. It is not the same size as a 1/2 drive socket head. but it will be tempting. It is, in fact, a larger size.
smokersteve
Fast5speed, Thanks What size is the drain plug?
silverton
probably 3/4 drive. Also beware what the fluid is rated for. I think we can only use GL4 as anything newer will destroy the brass inside the transmission, and then you need a new one.
Towncivilian
The plug is 13mm. Harbor Freight sells a drain plug socket set including the correct sized socket.
smokersteve
Thanks, I'm using Amsoil MTG synthetic oil. I appreciate the pointers being I'm not very mechanical
Precise1
Is that GL-4 (soft, yellow metal) compatible? You need to be sure or it will do more harm than good. Otherwise, sounds like you have it under control. B
smokersteve
Precise1, here is the info on the amsoil. I found a local guy selling it for $12/qt http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/transmission-fluid/manual/manual-transmission-and-transaxle-gear-lube-75w-90/?code=MTGQT-EA
Precise1
I'm not an oil expert, but it would seem that it is compatable... silverton
These tests/standards have me curious though... B I've heard of a 2 ball wear test, but a 4 ball test just sounds a bit too kinky.
Towncivilian
Precise1, this gear lube study describes each of those tests. While no GL-4 manual transmission lube is tested as part of this whitepaper, it is still an interesting read. Amsoil MTG should work great in any transmission requiring GL-4 fluid. Precise1
Thanks for your input, I was actually waiting for it. I will read that link tomorrow, thank you for it. B
smokersteve
Got the fluid changed. 5 min to drain the old fluid. It was a very dark grey color and there was 3 3/4 qts in it. 5 min to add amsoil. About 2 hrs to remove and reinstall gear shift knob. It was a pain. The tranny shifts as smooth as butter
Precise1
Yeah, I had to cut my carpet in 2 corners to get the shifter/boot out. It wasn't designed for that... Glad you feel the difference, I'm sure it will make it last longer. B
hagge
Hi! I have a buzzing sound that seems to come from the gearbox when running in fifth gear. (manual) I have been told that it is a problem with bearings in the gearbox that don't get lubed when standing still in neutral. And that Nissan recommends overfilling the gearbox when changing oil, to avoid further wear. Anyone else heard about this? /h
Slartibartfast
Yup, there's a TSB on overfilling the trans to keep the bearings happy (referenced earlier in this thread).
ahardb0dy
that's the same gear oil I used in my sentra's manual trans, no problems, works good even when it is cold out, still shifts very easy, not as cold as some of the Northern members but still works good.
