Lost my rear wing (wind deflector) during some spirited highway driving on a very gusty day. Screws pulled right out of the brackets / pillars attached to the hinges. Pillars showed some cracks along / around where the screw holes were, no idea if those cracks were a cause or result of the failure of course, but they were faded and maybe sort of brittle looking. Not something I ever paid much attention to... so I figured I'd let people know that after 25 years of rain, sun, salty air, (and loading canoes), etc., they should be investigated. I'm just happy no one in a convertible was following too close, coulda been brutal.

First time I have ever heard of that so I'd have to assume that the threads were somehow damaged before it actually failed.

It's possible the threads stripped out from the plastic being old.

 

I would definitely keep an eye on the wing if I had one.

I am about to pull mine off anyway... With the X rack it just doesnt fit...

I've had one drop on me, fourtnatly 1 screw held and it angled itself between my spare tire and hatch so I didn't lose the wing.

Were the threads stripped or is this a case for Loctite?

Really, they don't fit? Damn, I have one and a couple sets of hinges of hinges in the garage that I guess I won't mount begore the X-terra rack. Any pictures of what you mean?

In my case, it was hinge failure. You could see the crack where it was coming apart

They're self trappers...I check mine periodically BC it gets loose over time

Mine look like threaded machine screws...Still nice and tight after all this time.

I did make noise about making some mounts a while ago. I should be laid off soon, so that might actually happen...
