Locker incompatibility with LSD?

So, "everyone" always says that you can't put a locker in a WD21 rear diff with LSD, so an advantage of having an open diff is that at least you can put a locker in it.

This was questioned... but no one responded. What is the incompatibility with the LSD?

there is 2 types of lockers.... the one you add hardware between the spider gears (like a lock right locker) and the one where you completely change the heart or core of the differential (like an arb locker).

 

Now an lsd "core" has already friction disks between the spider gear rendering it unusable to install the lockright locker type. But then again, maybe the inners of the lsd could be removed, but I don't know about that.... maybe the "core" is different and does not give access to insert anything..see the picture ..

 

as for an ARB type of locker, having an lsd or not does not prevent you from installing since you are changing the whole "core" and only keeping the ring gear.

The "core" of the LSD diff is smaller in diameter than the open diff. I think that Richmond made the right decision to use the open diff for the locker. The LSD diff would have a much smaller locking engagement surface.

So, as Fleurys said, it seems that arb provides the carrier, and thus you can use an arb locker in a oem LSD diff. Seems this might be a fairly big revelation around here... or maybe people just prefer other types of lockers...

 

Perhaps modern electronic traction control makes all this obsolete though (brake the spinning wheel only).
