Gearing Changes?

Can you just change the gearing in your transfer case rather than having to change the gears in both the front and rear dif? And do they offer new speedometer gears to correct it for lower gearing? What is a good lower gear setup that would still work fine on the highway?

The speedometer gear is in the transfer case, so I don't think it matters what gears you put in the transfer case. they make lower gear kits for our TX-10 though. High will also be 1:1 though.

I'm wanting to lower the 2WD for towing.

i dunno if any companies make a different gear set for the HIGH position of our transfer case. your best bet is finding a 4.9 gear set from an Xterra.

Yeah, pretty sure the transfer case goes between 1:1 (H) and whatever you have in it for low gear. So you're stuck either doing the diffs... or adding more power.

i got 31's on my pathfinder to.. so would it be easier to change the gears in my stock transfer case or just get a transfer case from an xterra and bolt it on in place of the stock one?

Will that work and does an EX have a lower hi gear?

As mentioned above, this isn't going to do what you want. I don't know what 1996 is asking...
