Just for the sake of saying it, I think that Rangers have always been a damned good little truck too. I have owned more than I can remember and they are just excellent little trucks. They could stand to have a beefier rear suspension for hauling, but they are priced right in the market and are almost always good to go without needing work too.

Well, I think I have proved my point. There are a ton of little Ford Rangers out there for sale at a good price, still running strong. I drove on of my to over 500,000 miles and the throwout bearing went out on the transmission. I just sold it cheap since I had so many years of good service from it and I bought another.

Whoa! Lets not bring Jaguar into this haha, my dad is a Jag collector, all of which have been the most reliable vehicles Ive ever been around, not to mention the best ride Ive ever been in..

Of course Land Rover's have the bad rep though for reliability, and its for a good reason, but Jag's Id say atleast the ones Ive seen personally(and at the meets my dad would bring me too) were all top notch, solid running stock vehicles.. I learned to drive in a 95 Jag XJ.. The parents have an '02 X-type that has over 280k miles that is driven daily in Nebraska(salt does not phase this vehicle either), and nothing outside of regular interval maintenance has been done to it(aside from Amsoil being run in it)..

Obviously these are just my experiences, but I stand to believe that Jag's are very reliable(and pretty cheap luxury vehicles, after they depreciate that is).

Sorry for my rant haha, but I like to defend what I think/have experienced is a quality product. Anyways, your post of the CL ad's prove exactly what you were saying, I for one do not understand why people can/choose to charge that much for them.. whatever though Ill pay less for my Nissan and be happier.

See the Jag section I added to the bottom of the first post. :)

You have to give me some kudos for not just talking smack and then failing to produce evidence. We have things we love about this car or that car, but there are some chronic issues out there with some cars that we love. Hell, the Pathfinders had that stupid exhaust manifold issue for so many years. We bitched and bitched until they finally put a recall out for any Pathfinder under 100000 miles with broken manifold bolts, that they would replace for free. That was one of Nissans biggest and most common issues. The next thing I think was automatic transmissions on certain years. They would just stop working or sometimes they would have only reverse. It was a problem on a much smaller scale than the number of Toyotas with bad head gaskets, but an issue just the same.

If you managed to get one Jag that not only looks exquistic like they do, but that actually runs and drives without heavy weekly maintenance than you have something to be proud of there. That is not the norm for that car.

Ah I see your post of links of Jag's, it almost makes me want to buy one cause they are so cheap.. I agree about Rangers as well, they definitely do NOT get the credit they deserve, and there are oodles of parts out there for them as well, but they are a great truck that is very cheap.

We use Rangers at work, the way people drive them(because they arent paying for them, its the governments problem if they break right?) just reassures me that Rangers are definitely a cheap work horse that can get most any job done and still take more beatings long after. Its just a shame the Ranger is scheduled to be phased out as they are not selling hardly any compared to the Tacomas..

I just really hope that Frontiers arent next as they are consistently rated/reviewed to be the better truck at EVERYTHING than a Tacoma(and because I love those little trucks), too bad the general consumer doesnt care about the intricacies of the pickup, just the word of mouth of Toyota's 'reliability' from 20-30 years ago that isnt relevant to the current market..

No I agree, facts and evidence on your statements only supports your claims, as far as I can say though my experiences are strictly personal and I cant really prove any facts except what Ive experienced.

I will one day own a Jag after seeing the pure luxury they are as well as the reliability that comes with it.. I just hope mine lives up to the ones my parents have owned. Take that for whats it worth I suppose on me having faith in their reliability.

I have put allot of thought into this and here is what bothers me about the Jags. Yes, they are sexy sexy sexy. And the paint and body lines are artistic. The interiors remain flawless, so why are they selling for 1200-1600 across the country. My guess is this. I had a 10 year old BMW with 90000 miles on it under warranty. The transmission went bad and the very best quote I could get for rebuilding that 10 yr old 540i tranmission was $8800. That was more than half of the total value of the car and Then I had other issues pop up out of nowhere and I ended up selling the car for 8000 cash. My biggest personal loss ever on a car. Now, if something looks too good to be true, then there is a good change it is too good to be true. There will always be the lazy uneducated selling out there and we have to have checks in hand , pen full of ink, ready to seal the deal when those roll around. Just watch certain high dollar cars like bmw, mercedes, lexus, infinite, jags, range rovers, and others when they fall into everyman's price range, because one repair that could cost you $40 on your Nissan, might be 4000 on the Jag. My daughter hit something and ripped the bottom of the oil pan on her mercedes. She shut the engine off immediately and had it towed hom. The CHEAPEST damn oil pan for that 560 mercedes was $880 just for the part and they wanted another $600 to install. I bought the pan and paid a local guy to install it at my house, but I got somewhat lucky. Just beware of really enticing cars that seem to sell for much less than they are work in general.

I am and always will be a Nissan man, before I bought my 87 hardbody which was my very first brand new vehicle and first truck, I did look at the Toyota 4x4 but they did not offer a V6 in 87 and that is what I wanted, I also looked at full size Chevy 4x4's but did not like that every little thing was an option, they didn't have packages like the Nissan had. That said I only comment on Toyota from my experience with them, limited as it is, my wife bought an 88 4x4 used and my buddy has a 86 4x4. I'm sure different parts of the country will have more brands of vehicles available for sale or available in the junkyards. Just for an example as previous posters have listed what is available in the used vehicle market, here is what is listed in 2 Florida upullandpay's inventory as of today:

Yes, it appears that it depends allot on where you are located. There is probably some business venture waiting to be had where you transport rigs from one region where nobody cares to other regions where they can't get enough of them. Sounds too much like work to me, but you never know.

Actually, car dealers do it all the time. In the middle of the winter dealers in the north central US that get the worst weather dealer trade their cars for extra 4x4s and they trade to regions where there is no snow and people just want good cars. Supply and demand I suppose.

Anyway, I was not trying to knock Jags or Toyotas. Maybe I was just a little to blunt in saying what I have seen personally. For the record, I like both Toyotas and Jags.

I've never wanted a 4runner, I was looking for a S10 with a 5 speed and v6. Didnt find any for less then 3500 so I set my sites on finding a car. Found the pathfinder at a used car lot for the same price as a 96 GP and a 98 Jetta. Was winter and I wanted 4wd. I've beat it, broke the frame, welded theframe, beat it and welded it some more over a 30,000 mile period. Never let me down when I needed it, and even after having the tranny loose 3rd and 4th it still starts up with a fresh battory like it always did and shoves 800-1200 pound hay bales around like a tractor.

Solid axle 4runners are cheaper too lift but pathfinders can take the abuse there dealt over time.

I wonder if they stock a lot of Pathy's in Colorado Auto Wreckers because the Ronin Wheelers crew buy a crap load of Nissan Components and they make a decent turnover. If you follow their forums they gather a lot of stuff from the wreckers I know that much. I figure the main problem here is that they don't keep vehicles that are 10-15 years old unless they are big movers.

This is a qood question. I can tell you that I have an unhealthy habit of surfing the web for best "truck" prices, cars too, and I buy them on the side to resale from time to time.

What is a 4Runner anyway? Is it the Hilux Surf? Never heard of it here in North Borneo... :)

Alls i have to say is you will be happy with your puchase. Theres NOWHERE I have asked my pathy to go and it hasn't.

I can agree with your last statement, I know when I had my hardbody I felt the same way, I actually think I was only stuck 2 times in the 14 years I owned it, once when I first bought it and got in too deep in some mud but was in 2wd as soon as I put it in 4wd I drove right out, the second time I got stuck on a large patch of ice and couldn't get any traction and had to be pulled off, but most of the time I was the one pulling other peoples trucks out.

By the way this is a fore runner and yes it is also known as the Hilux surf:
