Tranny Replacement

After a few days of my tranny making a whine/grinding/vibration, it died in the McDonalds drive thru. I have never replaced a transmission myself so I'm going to need some help here. I'm going to the junk yard in a few days to pull one out. It sounds easy, but its it? Any tricks to getting it out? Any special tools?

Also could the torque converter have went bad and the tranny may still be good? I can run it though all the gears and the damn thing wont move an inch. I shut the engine off and then it would grab D...I made it about 15 miles and it started slipping again.

That's what you get for eating Micky D's...

The trannys are big and heavy so a tranny jack is helpful. You have to pull the T-bars(or at least the cross brace for them) to get the tranny out. You'll have to jack the truck up about 2 feet to get it out. The TC bolts are accessed through the starter hole IIRC. You will need a LONG extension and a couple of swiveleys to get the top bell housing bolts. Bring a friend.

Start soaking all the bolts with PB Blaster or some other penetrant. Make sure the stock tranny cooler isn't clogged.

Go to the garage section and download the factory service manual for reference. Search and read up on what others did or didn't do.

Oh, and sorry to hear, that sucks. I told you not to worry and just drive it, right?? Oops... :hide:

Din't someone here get one from a j/y by cuttign the floor out and lifting it UP? Besides what you will find searching, I'm abou tuseless on autos... sorry

yep, that was koveman and I. actually, we lifted the transfercase up and out, but dropped the tranny. that way we didnt have to remove the torsion bars.

doing it the proper way does require the removal of the tbars and crossmember. a tranny jack will be your best friend too.

have you thought about an auto to manual swap? or are you going to keep it auto?

I'd like to, depends if I can find a MT and all the belongings. I have found several pathys and all are AT.

JY's usually have some, or you could try people parting out on craigslist. If you do find one make sure its from a 90 or newer vehicle - ill find the tranny code for you when I get home. The reason is the newer ones have better gear ratios.

If you get one, hopefully I will be done with my AT to MT writeup.

You can lower the tranny using a engine puller(cherry picker?) Simon did it that way,but yeah a 5 speed would be worth it(strangly there not rated to tow as much as a auto) since I had to deal with the tranny burning up twice in mine(the second time I dont know why it burnt up,was gone in 20 miles)
