2001 Frontier 4.9 3Rd Member?

I have a chance at getting a 2001 Frontier 3rd Member with 4.9s and 31 spline.

 

Question is, will it fit my 1994 Pathfinder SE, that already has 4.6 gears? If I get this, I know I need the front, but it is a good price, so I need to know. Thank you.

I thought the frontier was 33 spline. if so you will need the side gears out of your 31 spline Providing both are LSD or Both are open.

I thought the same thing, but I am told that it is a 31 spline?

Perhaps my friend was wrong if they only came with a 33 spline.

either way, you can swap the side gears from a same type diff and be fine.

If you mark all the settings you won't need to reset the backlash once the correct side gears are in.

why would both need to be open or lsd? the gears should be the same in either right?

There are 31 spline frontiers out there. Rare but they're out there. I know of a guy who's swapped to 31 spline on his frontier to run a detroit.

 

it's plug and play. Only thing is the ABS. You'll just have to swap out the tone rings from your old 3rd onto your new one if you want to keep abs. Otherwise just leave it disconnected.

The side gears need to be from the same type of diff (open or LSD). The ring and pinion can be from any type of 3rd member.
