spare tire on roof..

i see some people on here put there spare tire on there roof of the car and i was wondering what u guys used to hold it down. i wanna start putting mine up there cause i use the hatch alot and tie tire gets in my way. im probably guessing u guys use straps to hold it.

I used a couple of ratchet straps on mine when I had a spare on the roof. Just remember that even a 31" tire and wheel is pretty heavy.

X2. I had a 33" tire up there, between the roof rack crossbars, and ratchet strapped down. No problems.

something like this could be improvised...

 

I did improvise something like that with 2 threaded j hooks and a piece of flat bar. put the flat bar over the wheel with the j-hooks through it and the lugs and hooked to the bottom of the basket.

My roof rack is deep enough that my 32" tire wont "roll out" or anything but you ya still gotta secure that sucker. My rachet straps are bright orange (just a little FYI)
