Tranny going out

Yeah, on the way back from my girlfriend' house, she started shifting really really weirdly, like into second gear then bam back into first then second then first then second and then it shifted normally into third. Slowing down it kept slipping out of hear until I was in first gear at 25mph...a lot of revs there...

First thing I did when I got home was shift it into reverse. Took a few seconds then BAM it shifted into reverse (I could hear internal mechanical clangs and thunk) and the whole truck shuddered. Same with Drive.

But then I put it in neutral and held the revs at 5k (thinking lack of fluid pressure) for about 15 seconds, shifted it into reverse, smooth as silk. Same with drive.

Drove it around the block again and it shifted like normal.

Got it home, smelled the fluid and it smells a little burned.

Tomorrow me and my dad are going to do a tanny flush, see if it helps.

I can't believe I posted about my tanny in PoHo and what not...and then this happens.

It's got what looks like a cooler right in front of the actual radiator for the coolant.

Is that what you're talking about?

Sounds like problems. Lack of flow could be part of it. Bypassing the stock radiator cooler is an answer, as they tend to clog/starve flow/let the tranny overheat. They clog, due to sediment from the tranny. Tranny sediments from parts wearing/poor fluid/heat/lack of fluid changes. Wear and heat are the two big killers of these trannys. See how it is all full circle?

IF I was you, I'd install a tranny cooler (at least bypass the radiator for test purposes only), flush/change the fluid and see what happens. Don't be complacent about these things...

Thinking about it, I was grinding up mountain roads on new years day, got pretty hot, smelled like something was burning by the time I got to the top. Temp gauge raised a bit too.

HOw much are tranny coolers? GG said that the thing in front of my radiator was for the AC, so I have NO idea how I would install a tranny cooler on my own :crossedwires:

 POS

The first one sucks a lot, the new one I have is a hell of a lot better. I can actually type without pressing a letter and having it select the one on the other side of the keyboard. LOL

A tranny cooler will cost you under $100. Get the biggest one you can. FWIW, mine's a 20k lb rated one. Take the lines out of your rad, and plug them into the cooler. Mount the cooler to the outide of the AC condenser and you're done.

WTF?!?!

Tranny worked perfectly fine on the way to school today, and I had to get on it hard to get out of the way of an asshat semi truck driver. No hint at all of what happened last night.

This thing is so flippin BiPolar...

Remember Mate - Pathfinders are ALIVE. They aren't your average vehicle :)

Lol figured that one out early on.

Tranny hasn't acted up once today, but my lifter tick came back. This whole thing is getting really amusing actually...just about everything that has gone wrong, is extremely intermittent. It's horrible

Better than outright failure and stranding you, right??

NO. Because now I don't know if its going to do it again next time I driver it or next year...

Got an offer for a tranny, wants to sell a newly rebuilt one for $400

I posted a wanted ad on CL and that's what I got...

Got the tranny hookup going, the same guy offered for me to work at $10/hr for a few days to pay it off, yard work and some cleaning, and i think fix something with the house.

Bought an 18,000lb rated tranny cooler today, so with the new tranny and cooler I should be good to go!

Oh yeah, tranny had 160k on it before it was rebuilt

Hell, even without doing the work that is a damn good price! Swap that in and then rebuild the one you have now with the TRANS-GO kit. Then you can swap it back in and have a nearly bulletproof tranny, and resell the $400 one for $600 and come out ahead :aok: .

I re-checked the email, and it was actually only $300 :D I hadn't thought about putting a shift kit in and selling the other one for like...almost pure profit. This could work out nicely...but for now I need a tranny that isn't going to implode at school 26 miles away from home

He's also VERY well educated about WD21s...I almost asked him if he was a member on this site lol

I'm going to look into the shift kit, for sure

Tranny is just about gone, barely wants to shift, constantly hunts between 3rd and 2nd, and 1st to 2nd.

If I barely hit the gas in 3rd gear it kicks down, and back and forth between gears.

It's annoying, but still drivable once it's on the freeway it stays in 2rd gear.

I think I got around to putting in a cooler too late, the debris has already stuck its self in some valve in the tranny.

did u ever change the fluid?

Yeah back when it first started acting up that's the first thing I did. It settled down after that, until today.

All day its been acting up.

Watch, tomorrow it'll be perfectly fine.
