I'm not sure how thick your skids are but I'm thinking a permanat soloution would be to counter-bore the holes big enough for a socket and deep enough to protect the fastener head. On second thought that would have to be a thick skid to be able to counter bore that much....

Next Idea:Not as simple but still simple.

drill the holes big enough for a socket and weld a backing over the hole with a hole in it for the fastener so it sits flush

or vise versa

make 1/4-3/8 plate doublers with socket sized holes and weld them over the fastenr head.

 

end result. no more washers to break, fastener sits in a recessed hole safe(er) from impact so it can easily be removed and best of all when a rock hits your doubler it does not apply any shear load to the fastener whereas the rock washer would.

Actually, you just need the rock washers with a short pilot sleeve for the bore. To lose one on the trail, well it's either torn off (bad luck) or you dropped it when you took the bolt off (stupidity, pick it up). What head bolt is used, standard hex? Using a pan head or others would reduce the clearance requirements quite a bit...

 

Yeah Pezzy, sent me an example or at least email me dimensions and I'll tell you what I can do/recommend.

That's how she's losing them, B. They're being torn off on the trail. She's popping the heads off the bolts, or stripping them out in the process.

 

Her idea of welding them to the plate is sound, as that would actually lend a little more support to the bolt as well, as she wouldn't have the rock washer alone prying against when she hits a rock.

I like the idea of welding the rock washers, or welding a plate with a large hole (like MY1PATH said). That should work well. Maybe I'll do that next time I remove my skids. I also want to strengthen the mounting points for the front skid as the little M6 (or whatever) bolts that hold the front of the front skid get stipped out really easy. There are some other larger threaded holes in that area that could be used...

Hmm, I don't have a plastic welder, or plastic washers....

 

Actually over sized washers do work well, I saw a guy who modified a Skid Row skid so that the bolt heads were tucked inside steel washers.

Interesting idea. A couple of them stacked, and welded to the skid would do the job methinks.

Seriously though, wouldn't stacked washers create a snag point? That' the whole idea of the OD slope. I must not get what you mean. Also, are you using hex bolts? What size thread? What size through hole?

3 washers stacked with a standard weld bead around theoutside and they won't snag, a nice pretty bead will just be like a chamfer on the edge :aok: .
