Kittamaru
I have a ticking noise in my engine... I know I need to replace my valve cover gasket (still ain't got around to that yet) but I was wondering - I saw the topic that broken manifold studs can cause ticking noises, especially on cold starts. How would I check to see if mine are broken...? I'm not really 100% sure what I'm looking for. How difficult are they to replace/upgrade if they are, or are not, broken. Also, while I'm doing this, will I have the engine apart enough to do the valve cover gaskets? Thanks! -Kitt PS - I'm also looking to get a new, deep cycle battery. Any suggestions on brand? Kittamaru
I have read the threads, problem is without labeled pics I'm not really sure what to look for - I may ask my mechanic to show me so I know for sure - we haven't gotten anywhere near this in my automotive class yet XD As for the battery - I did a search but didn't find a topic on brands. I'll try again though.
adamzan
k if you look down beside the fender inside the engine bay, your in an automotive class, i assume you know where the manifolds are. You'll see the heat sheilds for them, more than likely the bolts for those have rusted away or broken off. Either way, take off the heat sheild, and it's obvious where the broken ones are. Optima makes good batteries, can't remember off the top of my head which is the deep cycle version.

Kittamaru
*chuckles* I'm broke mate. My fiance's cavalier is at over 1500 in repairs (engine + fuel pump & relay, now looking at the ignition system + key tumblers) Ugh... only reason we're keeping it is it's the 2.4L DOHC Ragtop variant. nice lil car... just seems to hate us

But it only had a water pump done on it. Its startin to rust, it has the 2.4 too i think. I still hate cavaliers no matter how much faster it is than my pathy. GrimGreg
Actually Optima aren't as good as they used to be. Try an Orbital brand instead.
Kittamaru
I'm actually thinking it's not the exhaust manifold - my mechanic thinks that, because of the mileage I've put on it in the last two years, it may be the lifters and/or rockers making the ticking noise. I'm looking at a total engine rebuild kit - does $500-800 sound about fair?

Kittamaru
red, if I knew enough to pull my engine apart, I would. However, I cannot afford the time or money if I make a mistake and break something, loose something or, God forbid, simply can't get it put back together. If a more knowing NPORA member lived anywhere near me, I'd chance it knowing that, absolute worst case, i could get some help. As it is, though, I really cannot loose my daily (and only) driver. NaturaTek
Kitt, dang..we have things in common, we ride 90 pathys and our girls driving a cavalier. LOL, those things feel tiny once u ride in pathys for a while. What other stuff have you done to your pathy in the last couple of months?

You don't really have to pull anything apart, or at least I didn't. Step 1. Open hood Step 2. Look down the side of the engine. Step 3. Look really close to see if any studs are broken off Step 4. If no, , if yes, time to start saving, buy some good bolt extractors or just live with it. I can take some pics of mine if you want.
Kittamaru
Wait, why does it say in the FAQ that you have to go in thru the wheel well then?
adamzan
Well the one i saw that was broken through the engine bay on mine was enough info to tell me where the problem was.
zeppelindrummer
Take off the heat shield. I was going to do this and take a picture of my holes/broken studs... but it was cold outside, and i like the warmth of my house. anyway... That is their approximate location There are six bolts that you need to take off.. if i am remembering correctly, you will probably see holes, (i do at least) and that will tell you if its the manifold. I have one of my pieces broken off.... as Red said could happen... I'm skipping the fixing, and going straight for some thorley headers.... i can't wait til the pathy has a few more ponies and a new voicebox!
