Timing belt cog on crank - can it move?

Thinking about a little problem I'm having. Is it possible for the timing belt cog on the crankshaft to move? I know the harmonic balancer has a woodruff key, but what about the timing belt?

it also has a keyway. but keyways can shear.

Mr. R had his keyway round itself out. said that if he would have just replaced the key when it was first showing signs of wear, he would have avoided all the damage that was done.

-thnkboutit- -thnkboutit- Does anybody know how much this has happened. I just did my t-belt, tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, cam seals, and that obnoxious litte 2" hose. It would really suck if a $.50 part was what did my engine in. :oops:

MWS, replace those keys ASAP... that is what did my original engine in. Both the HB and TB keyways rounded!

What happened? Does the engine run? If it runs and has no power after a t-belt job it is most likely that the t-belt is off a tooth. This is from experience.

Thank you. That picture is exactly what I needed to verify the design. I am still putting my money on a collapsed lifter, but this is number two on the hit parade.

I have kicked around the idea of rebuilding... and building, the original engine, but it was the lack of a crank that stopped the idea.

 

If you have an extra, I may very well be interested.
