Yeah, the WD21 uses a Centerlink with pitman and idler arms and a steering box. If the truck steers normally, but without the power assist, it's possible that one of two things happened. It threw the belt, or the pump died.

There is no rack, or pinion on a WD21.

You should NEVER use 4WD on pavement unless you are driving in a low-traction situation. I.e. heavy snow, or ice. Wet does not constitute a low-traction situation. Most of your problems with spinning out are coming from your tires. Those tires are junk. They provide very very little wet traction. I'd invest in some good tires ASAP, especially with all the wet weather the east coast has been getting lately.

It's just an XE with the sport package. XE was the base trim level, and the sport package added options like power mirrors, LSD, etc. SE is the middle of the road which has all the power options standard and a nicer stereo. LE is the top of the line one with leather, sunroof, power seats, etc.

A rear locker w/ IRS is fine as long as the speeds are low when the locker is engaged. Hummers have run lockers with IFS/IRS for years. I think you'll get the best gain out of a proper set of off-road tires though. Ditch the all-seasons and get some ATs.
