considering IRS yes or no?
AndyC replied to Cory74700's topic in Solid Axle Swaps, Hardcore Custom Fab
So is 4.10 -
Apparently my tapatalk is in failure mode...

He means how or why it failed.

I'm definitely subscribing to this thread, I'm very curious to how the tune comes out. We had a member with a vg33 xterra that ran headers, true dual exhaust no cats, it was a nightmare. MAF size and scaling are going to be key.

Could the ECU be going into limp mode after a bit of abuse?
-
Willing to bet clutch, probably on its last legs to begin with. Once you heat it up its going to slip more. Are you doing all of this "spinning" in 4hi or low? Save your clutch a bit using 4low. Rocking back and forth to extricate yourself, you shouldn't be spinning the tires too much anyhow.
-
Drove a 2nd gen xterra with E rated toyos. The ride was firm but not uncomfortable, however flex, even aired down to 10psi was non existant.
-
Since your wheeling it, how 'bout a trailer hitch? Cuts into your departure angle a bit but adds some weight, protection, and a good rear recovery point. The springs will settle a bit as well.

As cool as the vq40 is, the DBW system sucked, especially with a manual. Always felt like the computer was more in control than I was. There was a different map for low range than high, delayed throttle response. I think you would also have to tune out all of the traction control nannies and ALBS. Other than the coolness of keeping things all Nissan, you'd probably be dollars for doughnuts ahead with a SBC swap. Not to mention timing chain issues on the vq...

^^agreed^^ those are damage multipliers, and anything that mounts outside of your bumper cuts into your approach angle. Your MPG will take a little hit, maybe some extra wind noise... I bet you could have a local fabricator come up with a design you would like, that provides actual protection, and won't cost an arm and a leg. Plus keep your money local!

They also provide a good jack point for a high lift. Remember, although they may be 80lbs, that weight is very low on the truck. Definitely keep them, I always dread spotting the guys without sliders, slows everything down, one misplaced tire and Crunch!

Need a second set of eyes on these parts
AndyC replied to rollingrock's topic in 90-95 WD21 Pathfinders
Sometimes, if the idler arm is going it can strip the UCA bolt in the frame with it moving around. May be something to check on. -
Ok, so your new tire is 16.8% larger than stock, we multiply that by your stock 4.3 and get 5.0224 as a final drive ratio. 5.13 sounds ideal for wheeling.
-
Closest metric measurement is 315/70/15
-
And no, your calculation is off because you added 17, if you have a 15in wheel you add 15, so 33in.
-
Are you going to stick with 33's after the SAS?
-
Yep, you've got what you need! You also undoubtedly know of a few un patrolled parking lots near by. Go and cut 200 donuts, stopping from the left, right, 2wd, 4wd. Let your girl do the same. Keep a strap in your truck to help those who get stuck in less capable vehicles. Always think of other motorists as family members, we are all in this together...

Sometimes letting the clutch out partially and slowly will allow it to fall into gear. So, try keeping a little pressure in the gear selector, then letting the clutch out a bit.

Lokka - the front locker for the R50 from Australia
AndyC replied to stioc's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Road ratcheting would be eliminated by manual hubs, go for it! -
The Lokka (sp?) is a full locker, not selectable. The nice thing about running a full locker up front is on the street, you don't know it's there. In the dirt, the ratcheting is far less noticeable. A front LSD is fine, paired with a rear locker is a formidable setup. But for my money, if I were to upgrade the front I would step up to a full locking diff.

All wheel independent suspension
AndyC replied to NWT87PATHY's topic in Solid Axle Swaps, Hardcore Custom Fab
Those are awesome, another option would be the front M205 and rear IRS out of a 2005+ V8 Pathy. There are lift options out there, UCA's. cheaper than custom. -
What are the trails like in your area that you can fit a full width setup on?! I guess I'm asking what kind of terrain is your build directed at?
-
And on an '05 at least you can shut off traction control. Oh yeah, welcome to the world of ABLS which is great, TPMS (tire pressure monitoring) which sucks.
-
Having owned an '06 I can say it would be perfect for what you want to do. I wouldn't buy one as a wheeler, but they have plenty of grunt, tow well, are comfortable and reliable. As mentioned, the timing chain guides were a recall item, you can hear them go out, sounds like a super charger or ground noise. RPM dependent whine. Also the tranny cooler tends to make a milkshake with the radiator, but there are documented remedies. The diffs are weaker (R180 front c200 rear or a D44 variant in manuals and offroad package) but if you are not using it on the trail they are plenty strong. Plus's: amazing engine, rack and pinion steering which is effortless. Lots of interior space, room for an inflatable queen mattress in the cargo area. Just remember your maintenance items will be spendy. They are coil on plug, the hubs are not serviceable as they are one unit. Yet,for a modern vehicle, they are easy to work on. Hope this helps.
