  1. Yeah, well I mean I just got done replacing the oil and filter and I just bought another good filter and some more oil today. I figure I will just do a few more oil changes and see what happends "This may be a stupid note and I am really tired and I've tried to read through the other posts, but are you sure the sound is coming from a lifter? It can't be like a bearing in a tensioner or a wheel for the timing belt? Does your motor take any oil? Bluesmoke? When you start the car you should propably hear the lifters, just for a sec, right? Is it the same db on startup and after a while? Is this the same sound (at startup) as you are hearing when you have droven a bit? Sounds very strange, and I guess I dont even have to bother asking how your oilpressure is... Hm... " When I did my timing belt I replaced the tensioner, and the noise was before the timing belt. After adding a thicker oil it got worse, which leads me to believe it has something to do with the oil. No my pathy doesn't burn any oil... They tick on and off for the first 10 mins of driving. And no it's not my exhaust manifolds.. i had them replaced. And I tried to pinpoint the sound and it seems to be coming from the manifold area. Any way, I guess I will just try an oil change once a week and see if it gets rid of it. -Mike
  2. Has any one heard of replacing a quart of oil with a quart of Auto tranny fluid, to clean out the engine? When I search for "hydraulic lifter pathfinder" I see a couple of forums and car help websites that say to replace some oil with some auto tranny fluid and it should go away. One website says to swap a quart of oil for a quart of tranny fluid, and a different website says to do half and half. Has any one done this before? -Mike
  3. Okay so a little bit of an update. So I changed my oil to a heavier weight last week... and It still makes the ticking noise. Actually it seems to be worse (or at least last for a longer time). I have a 8-10min drive to school and it almost ticks the whole time. Once it is warm it's fine. And I tried to pinpoint the sound using a piece of pvc pipe as my stethoscope , it seems to be coming from right were the exhaust manifold is on the passenger side. I think I may switch back to a thinner oil so it won't last so long, any one else use this "Engine Restore" stuff? I am kind of scared to. I hope I can get through this winter with out replacing it... after $500 worth of exhaust work this summer and my balding tires that need to be replaced VERY soon... I won't be able to afford it. <Start rant> Well lets see, this car cost me $2400 a 2 years ago... last year I put in new timing belt, radiator, starter, belts, waterpump, thermostat, shocks. For a total of about $700 in parts. Then the manifolds go bad... hmm another $400... then the exhaust falls apart (exhaust shop ripped me off $200).. and now hydraulic lifters and new tires (another $600 for tires). Bought it at 103k it now has 113k and has cost me nearly $1900 in repairs. </End rant> Seems like a car this new shouldn't need this much repair. But I guess still cheaper than a car payment -Mike
  4. Thanks for all the replies... I will try a few things and see If I can pinpoint where it is coming from. It's due for an oil change now.. so I will try a heavier weight oil. Oh and during the summer it pretty much dies down.... But when it starts getting cold out like right now... it really gets loud in the mornings. -Mike
  5. Hey guys.. As you probably read, there is a ticking noise coming from my engine. I have assumed for about 6 months now that it was just the Exhaust manifolds ticking, but I had the manifolds done this summer and the ticking still exists. And yes I have checked and changed my oil in the last 6 months. The sound comes and goes like:....bbbrrrrrtick......TICK TICK TICKTICK..tick...brrrrrr and seems to go away once the car gets warm. So I am really not sure what is next.... I tried SEAFOAM last spring, with no results. Any suggestions? A little video that you may be able to hear the ticking on, I tried the video with the hood open first but the engine noise drowned it out.... so that's why the hood is shut in this video. 6. Hey all, I need to get a hole in my exhaust welded. And I know a lot of you are from WA and was wondering if any one has had a good experience with a local exhaust shop. I live around the seatac airport... for reference. Thanks, -Mike
  7. Mmmm 4wheelin..... I think I am going to be gone on a family vacation on 8/8/08... bummer.. -Mike
  8. Evans creek is still listed as "snow" on the national forests website..... but it doesn't say inaccessible I was just up at Tinkham road a few weeks ago and it was snowed in about 500 yards up.... and my friend was up their 4rth of july weekend and said the snow had receded a long ways (Shooting area now accessible! (wrong hobby:) ). It's melting every day.... when it's clear I am game for a trip, along with my brother and his pathy and his G/F and her land rover freelander (pfft...) -Mike
  9. Last time I counted there were 12? or is this the one with one bolt 11 studs Yeah, that or have 5523Pathfinder do it I want the experience but not that bad... The problem with the neighbor is.... he got out of the auto repair because he hated it ... Plus he is super busy with his new job, so I kinda feel bad asking him about auto stuff. Even though he seems to know just about everything. Any input on keeping old manifolds vs getting new ones? -Mike
  10. Seriously? You would do it for $300 or help for $300? I don't mind driving that far... it's only like an hour and half from here... Would I need new manifolds as well? or can you use the old ones again? -Mike
  11. Yeah i was actually thinking of offering him some money to help me out...
  12. Hi all, Well It's almost time for me to get out of school for summer vacation. This means that repairs are to begin on the pathy, the most major repair being the loud exhaust leak from the front (which I assume is the manifolds). I was going to leave this task up to the pro's but after receiving many estimates it would cost well over $1000 (probably more like $1500 if there are many broken studs). So now it's ditch the pathy for what ever price I can get for it with the exhaust leak and hunt for another car... or repair the exhaust leak my self. I would like to try and repair it, but I have heard with out a body lift it can be very difficult. And I am afraid once I get the manifolds off I won't be able to get the broken studs out (as I have no bolt extracting experience). Also if I did it my self I would buy some Doug Thorley headers with the money I would save. Are they harder to install ? I have read many articles on here with people asking about exhaust manifold leaks ... but most people seem to have it done by pro's My neighbor who used to be a nissan mechanic says I could do it easy... (easy for him to say ) What do you think? attempt it or not? -Mike
  13. Cool... I have always wanted to set up a cctv system I always see them at costco and am tempted to put one in my cart Unfortunately (or fortunately ) we don't have much use for one Let us know if you catch any one with it...
  14. Yeah I was wondering about that.... the other stuff will cause rust right? -Mike
  15. I found it.... I let it dry out today ( a nice day in the NW yey!) After letting it dry I then peeled back all of the carpet and the padding, and the rubber like stuff on the wheel well. Then I took the hose and sprayed water in the wheel well and that area.. And there was the leak, a tiny screw hole was just letting water come right in. A little silicone caulk should fix that. -Mike
  16. Hey guys, I kept smelling kind of a musty mold smell and I finally went to investigate... for some odd reason the carpet is sopping wet under the passenger side carpet (right where the passenger would put their feet) I cleaned it up and dried it up and the next time I got home from driving (it was wet outside) it was sopping wet again. I figure water is being kicked up by the front tire and is leaking in somewhere. I lifted the carpet and see no holes in the floorboard? I have no rust issues .... any one know where it could be leaking from? I though maybe some one has had this problem before thanks for your help -Mike
  17. Just incase every one hasn't found the new link yet LINKY** FSM for 1994 up to 2002 **LINKY
  18. Cleaned MAF a while back with no change. Not sure about the EGR (I will have to search for a post on how to clean it or where its at) I do hear a whistle... like It sounds like it's coming from my air intake, could that cause it? I actually checked that by taking the cables off and it still stuck.. I forgot to check the fuel filter Doh! .... I have tried to pull codes but get no error.. and I don't get a check engine light... Thanks for all the great ideas... I will get back to you guys after I do a couple.. -Mike
  19. Excuse my ignorance... but what coil are we talking about? Yeah I do have an auto... and thats exactly what it's like. I think I am going to go get the tranny flushed... thanks for your help.. -Mike
  20. Hey guys... this one is going to be hard to explain When I am off the gas peddle, coasting down a hill. My pathy will start doing this strange jerky thing... like my brakes are being tapped on off on off ... If I then push on the break or the accelerator it goes away. Another but possibly related issue: my pathy is missing or sputtering now At idle, when I first start it up...or when I am at a stoplight it sounds like it misses a couple of times... just a quick vvvrrrrmmmmm blub*sputter*blub vvvrrrrmmmmmm I have replaced the cap, rotor, sparkplugs, airfilter... with no change. I changed out the timing belt last summer... and I am starting to wonder if these could be something to do with timing? Any advice on these issues would be of help The following is a rant with all the things wrong with my car.. and really has no relevance to my post above Exhaust leak- getting worse ... I now sound like a clacking 747 .... I know it's bad now because yesterday as I was driving by some one on the sidewalk plugged there ears as I went by... Starting - After replacing the battery, ignition relays, inhibitor relay and the starter it self ... it still doesn't start 1/4 of the time.... I carry a screw driver that jump starts it rather nicely... good entertainment for passengers Throttle body - No matter how much I clean it... it still sticks when I go to a stoplight... people keep thinking I am trying to race them... my passengers think I am a lead foot. Sputtering- explained above Tranny - all the sudden starting to shift at strange times... (plz... don't let my tranny die meh... -Mike
  21. I would like: And spend the rest on the old pathy and make it off road only -Mike
  22. I thought nissan must have released a new vehicle..until I looked up the navara ... we call it the Frontier here in the states. But yeah.. the frontier was my first choice for a vehicle.. but the pathfinder I got for cheaper so thats what I got one -Mike
  23. My pathy has the exact same symptoms this week.... and I talked to my dad about it yesterday and his A/T hard body is doing the same thing. We we figured that it must be due to the cold weather? I was just about to ask about this.... like you said I checked my dipstick and my tranny fluid is above the hot level. Strange..... Oh and make sure you have the button on the left hand side of the steering wheel set to "Auto" not "Power" I made that mistake once And some times if you accelerate hard there is a button behind the gas peddle that will trip your tranny into power mode... next time it happends look for the Light on the left hand side.. if it's lit up switch it to Auto.. -Mike
  24. Yeah I hate the stock cup holder for the driver and passenger... I feel like I am risking my life every time I try and grab my soda.. I bought some of the single cup holders that can go in your glove compartment, but my glove compartment wouldn't shut with em in there. I did find they work good for a rear cup holder though.. This works pretty good... but won't hold up to something heavy like a big gulp.
