  1. All the best to everyone from down here in Victoria. Catch up soon. Safe driving. Nick
  2. I stopped to help out a chicky babe and her boy the other night on the side of the road near our place. We are in the country so you know when people aren't stopped on the side of the road for the fun of it. It was an oldish Range Rover with a delaminated tyre. He didn't have a clue. He did manage to find the wheel brace and fit it to the nuts and the jack was under and lifted. Apart from the odd truck tyre on the side of the road, I haven't seen a car tyre do that before. The whole tread was off the tyre and it stuffed the back of the Rangie on the way out!! I had a fridge full of cold bottled water in the car for the following days hay pickup in the paddock. They thought I was god when I offered them some as it was in the 30Cs temp. They must have pent ages trying to get the nuts undone. They looked stuffed! Nick
  3. Watyf As others have said it is normal. BUT highly NOT recommended. What you are experiencing is referred to as axle bind or axle windup. In 2WD, the engine has no input to the front wheels allowing the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds. This is why we have a diff in the front and the rear. If you had diff with welded up spider gears, the axles would want to spin at the same speed and when you try to turn a corner, one of the wheels has to slip. In 4H or 4L, the centre diff is locked which ensures the front and rear diffs spin at the same speed and together. The front wheels are trying to spin at different speeds to the back and because the centre diff is locked, they can't so one of the tyres trys to slip. Also as others have said, you should ONLY use 4H or 4L on surfaces of low traction so that the wheels can slip slightly when they need to. In an extreme case, you could break an axle using 4H or 4L on bitumen. Nick
  4. Nope. Qualified Telecommunications Technician (in 1984) Just doing some hours in the fire truck which will end up with me having a Medium Rigid licence, so that may open up a few doors. Still have some $ up our sleeves but rather save that for a rainy day, not right now. I'm not even going to replace the cd/radio in the Pathy yet. Geet its getting boring with no sound in the Pathy... Just wao wao wao wao wao wao from the tyres! Nick
  5. Don't think I have seen him on PCOA, or you for that matter. Once these sliders are dnoe you should put some pics on PCOA. I am guessing you will get rid of a few sets. Nick
  6. I've spent 29 (how many?) years in Telecommunications. From my apprenticeship with Telstra in the 80's through to many years at NEC Australia doing PABX maintenance, level 2, level 3 support and finally Networm Management with many Vic govt organisations as my customers. I have had a couple of bits and pieces back at NEC but nothing permanent. I also currently have a short term job Project Managing some upgrades to DSE (Govt dept) fire Incident Control Centres across Victoria. Went for a site visit to Noojee last week, got another one at Rawson (near Walhalla) next week. The 2 guys I deal with at DSE both have motorbikes so we will be riding up there and prob have lunch at the locl pub. I have also done about 6 weeks with a friend as a Plumbers Labourer earlier this year. I have also designed, built and raced a 1927 Ford Roadster in the Modified class of Drag Racing. I was able to better and hold 3 Australian National Records in the class in 2000 and 2001. I held the records at 10.21 sec and 121mph but went as fast as 9.93 and 126mph. It had a turbo charged Rotary engine in it then, after that I sold that engine and built a Holden V6 to go in it. Whilst it went ok, never ended up with enough money, or help from the engine builder to go further with it. It ran a best of 11.38 and 116mph before the engine retired and got sold to a guy near Cyril at Peats Ridge. I built the whole chassis from scratch including the pipes on both engines. The turbo was easy, 4" stainless elbow into 3" stainless elbow, the V6 was a little more of a challenge but worked and looked ok. Car with Holden V6 in it. We have a small farm in Gippsland with a few horses and 2 cows. Nick
  7. Whos is the lucky truck getting the sliders Cyril? Newcastle is the home of PCOA..... Anyone I know?? Nick
  8. I got 31" Maxxis Bighorns on NJ Pajero wheels. I also have 50mm front and rear lift. Nick
  9. I wish I could fit 33's or even 32's on my 2" lifted 2004 Pathy! The 31's I have are as big as I can fit. Not wanting to do any fancy hammer work or that sort of thing to my Pathy. I love my Pathy.... I'm sure you guys with hammers and 33's love yours too. Nick
  10. I did this mod a while ago. it really helps with additional air into the engine. As you can see, there is a screw on cap to use when crossing deepish rivers. http://www.pcoa.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4285 Pezzy, that crossing is a very short crossing. With the use of video editting, I cut a photo from the video for the best pic. The pic hasn't been photoshopped or anything, just cut from the video. If you pull off the inner guard plastics, you can see the pre-air box. There are only a couple of bolts holding it on. Pull it off and take a look at it. It could do with some more diameter inlets and outlets, but it's not bad. Any water has to flow down through the inlet under the guard, up to the top of the pre-air box, then down into the next chamber, then up to the air filter box. It's no sealed snorkel but works well with the addition of a front tarp. (below) It's a simple lightweight 6ft x 4ft poly tarp held down with shock cord to the underside at the front and down to the lip of each guard. This way it fits R50 with no bullbar, with bullbar, with nudgebar and R51 without bar. Haven't tried any other vehicles yet. Cost about 10 bucks!! Nick
  11. They look good Cyril Cyril, does the bracket in question here wrap right around that frame bracket or just right angle bracket? Full wrap around and bolt through may be the go for additional strength. I like the idea of being bolt on to OEM mounts, but maybe need some additional like yours in this photo. Nick
  12. Welcome to the forum brix Nick
  13. Welcome to the forum Casey We in oz have those 245/70/16 tyres from std. My road tyres are slightly oversized at 245/75/16 with 31 x 10.5 for off road. Nick
  14. Welcome to the forum phraza. Like the petrol Pathys (underpowered) it's great to see peoples eyes when you end up where they think you shouldn't have got to... Nah too steep for one of those things. Nick
  15. Wassup Dave? Can't be much worse than a week before Christmas and no job in sight can it?? I got retrenched from my job at the end of April this year, Only a couple of temp things since... Nick
  16. Hi Guys I can see Maxstrikers point where he has needed a snorkel for some real extreme wheeling. Although, I do intend to agree with others here, before you rip in to installing a snorkel like on Bobby's black R50 here in oz, you gotta weigh up the for and againsts. I have always brought these up with people here debating whther to install one or not. Down in Victoria where Bobby, Justin and I are from, there aren't many rivers deep enough to warrant a snorkel. I have had mine over the bonnet with no snorkel fitted, I did have a tarp across the front though. Though Justin's R50 got a air box full of water on the same bonnet high crossing. Here's mine below. I think the under guard pre-air box does a fairly reasonable job of restricting water ingress, though not as good as a snorkel. I think a lot has to do with the river crossing techique too. I think these snorkels are available on ebay.com.au Nick
  17. Hi Pathyhaze Welcome to the forum. 1. Souds like you have water in one of the bearings. Alternator, water pump or idler/tensioner pulley. Will need a stethascope to find where the noise is coming from. 2. What size tyres did you have before the Patrol tyres and what size are they now? Patrol tyres should make your speedo more accurate as the Pathy speedo is out from std. Nick
  18. Cyril I had a good look at the pics you sent me a while ago whilst under the car yesterday. I think I got the hang of them now. Those pics were very helpful - thank you. I just saw 3 brackets to the frame rails on each side of the car. Do you see any point in adding a 4th bracket using a 90deg 38NB from the rear step OEM mount to the slider main rail? I guess if yours are stable enough without the extra one, why bother? I am round here usually daily. Nick
  19. I'm very keen on those slider update pics Cyril. Did you have plans I could see or buy pls? I just need a job so I can pay for them! you either have money and no time, or heaps of time and no money. Oh well. We are off to the High Country New Years Day for a few days with the 4wd camper trailer. That will brighten things up a little. Doing Butcher Country and Caledonia River Tracks. Will post some pics when we return. Nick
  20. Nice one!!! Well done on TOTM Nick
  21. A full length of 50x5! Is that 6 or 6.5m? Do you run one for the slider and one to butt up beside the pinch weld? Maybe you have some left over I'm thinking. I was thinking of running 50x25 along side the pinch weld on its end. Maybe yr plans are different to mine. Nick
  22. Cyril I will be very interested in seeing the finished R50 sliders. There are so may people on PCOA looking for some including myself. Like you, I just got to find the time and money atm. I live about 25km from Warragul in a very small town clled Heath Hill. Perched up on a north facing hill, we can see Mt Baw Baw to the east and Westernport Bay to the west with Bunyip State Forest in front of us. Actually, we were up in Walhalla area 2 weekends ago. Heres a link to my trip reports if you interested. http://www.4x4earth.com.au/forum/trips-gatherings/5103-saturday-trip-report-jericho-tunnel-otooles-09-team-nickj.html and http://www.4x4earth.com.au/forum/trips-gatherings/5104-sunday-trip-report-deep-creek-1-tk-otooles-09-team-nickj.html Hope you enjoy them. Nick
  23. Hey Cyril Hmmmm, R50 Sliders! I am about to tackle a set myself for my R50 with the view of making a couple of sets if they turn out ok. I've got lots of pics of a production set on someone's car and I think I have enough to go on with. I would be interested to see yours when they are done, although i may have mine done before then. I have damaged my drivers sill for the 2nd time and don't want to do it again, or at least have some protection.. First time was $3800 repairs and the second time $1000. I plan to use 50mm x 5mm square tube with 40mm x 5mm supports. Would have liked to use the OEM step mounts but I don't think they are strong enough. Yeah Dave, I did recognise the name and the Terry too. Nick
