  1. So the service guy call today at 930am. Says his tech believes it might be a power valve screw (like he didn't hear me yesterday when i told them to start there) and said it would cost $250 to take off the intake and verify. I said go for it, it's what it's there for. I ask who's gonna pay for it if it is. he said contact nissan, gave me the number, and i did. He said he'd call back and let me know what they found, never did call me back. Talked to a customer rep with nissan who took my info and problem down, and said someone would contact me tomorrow after contacting dealer and evaluating request for "financial assistance". I called the dealer back at 4pm and yep, number 3 cylinder is missing a screw, so they took out the plugs and tried to fish it out, no luck. So, he said my options were, leave it there and hopes it burns out, said it's already allot smaller than it's supposed to be, or remove the head and get it out (the $3000 dollar 22 hour option). So that's what i've got so far. I'll keep you all updated as i hear from nissan. I'm not holding my breath there. I guess my next call is to the Attorney general of my current state and the state i bought it in, but i don't hold allot of hope there either. The service guy said he believes nissan will claim it's out of warranty and not their problem, which i might buy if this was a wear item, but come-on, it's not even close. It's loctite on a friggin screw. I bought japanese hoping to avoid the domestic type issues.

Anyway, if you have a 2002 vq35(first year with the engine i belive), get going, don't procrastinate like me, and get those screw tight. I wonder if they got their heads out of their asses and did it right after that? Maybe everyone with a vq35 should get going on this. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the update...I was wondering what the verdict was going to be and even more interested to see if, based on your trip to the dealer, what I had heard from my VQ that one day was in fact a screw falling out. My question is: how can you leave it in there if the engine's making such a terrible noise?

I believe late build 2000 Pathy's were the first to get the VQ's, but it's happening on 04's even. It's a terrible design flaw!! And they don't give a rat's about it either.

I'm pulling for you man...I really hope those 1-800-a$$-hole Nissan North America d!ckwads don't pull the out of warranty sh!t on you. It's reasons like this I may never buy another NEW nissan again...they're build quality and customer relations have simply gone down the sh!tter.

    Keep us updated!

    Gianni

  2. Fixed that for ya :aok:

    LOL thanks :aok:

The service manager here told me that they've NEVER heard of or seen the wd21 frame rot issue, OR The leaking fuel filler issue that my father had on his r50, they didn't even cover him under the recall!

Yep. another classic issue. I'm not bashing Nissan service managers by themselves and saying they're peons compared to the rest of the industry...in fact I think they're actually pretty good (compared to some of the other dealers I've dealt with) and the denials they have are probably from a higher power instructing them to do it...they're not going to just admit to every common issue they're cars have. That could cost the company millions in settlements. Nissans of late (2000+) just seem to have some inherent issues with them that are worse than normal it seems (powertrain wise)

  3. Ahh, got it. The screw made it all the way through the exhaust!? How the heck did it past the cat? That's Crazy. Anyway, the dealers service manager claimed he has only seen the problem once on a altima (or was it maxima), and never on a pathfinder. I assured him the screw problem is happening, all over the country, and he just shook his head in doubt. This is not going to be fun in any way.

No kidding...Nissan service managers love to plead the fifth with this problem. I had the SAME EXACT issue with my 2002 QR25DE powered SE-R Sentra (same engine as the 4 cylinder Altima's) My engine actually DID eat a screw that bent the sh!t out of the side electrode on the plug...I bogged down on 3 cylinders with 3/4 acceleration on the skinny pedal in third gear doing about 65 mph (on the highway) The QR's are NOTORIOUS for this problem (esp. the production date 2001-late models which mine was) The entire engine was replaced with a 2005 one under warranty...and the service manager claimed he'd never once heard the issue before. That's exact reason was why I ended up getting rid of that car and into the Pathy...mainly because of it's still Japanese-built roots (the Sentra's prooudly made in Mexico) Little did I know this issue is becoming mainstream with them.

They need to get their head out of their a$$es is what needs to happen...and stop meddling in joint ventures with Renault and GM!

  4. Unfortunately, those HOA's and CC&R's are YOUR problem to deal with, and most of the newer versions have some bite, they can fine you and/or LIEN your property, as in you can't sell without dealing with it. I work in real estate title, and this is some of the stuff I see daily. "I didn't know" simply doesn't cut it at all, you will lose. When you signed to buy your place, and also usually if you signed a rental app for a house in a newer neighborhood, you also signed to accept documents detailing these rules (CC&R's, among others), and to agree and abide by the rules (look at the contract and stack of paperwork sitting in your closet or file cabinet), and to accept their penalties. Pretty much, you're stressed out while buying your house, here's a 100pg+ stack of stuff with a couple pages that could screw you, please sign. There are some ways around some of the stuff, or maybe you have cool owners that let you slide, but really, you're most likely screwed (based on your local laws, of course). Seller disclosure is generally not an issue, as you were almost guaranteed to have been handed a copy of those CC&R's/rules in that stack of paperwork you were given when you bought your place. I had a fukin-fit at my old place when they told me on like New Years day that I had unauthorized (Christmas) lights in place, only to read that sure as hell, anything other than white was considered against reg's. F- that isht, in my book. You really should be ok in older neighborhoods with CC&R's, as they're usually just protecting against some lost hippie trying to paint their house tye-dye, but the newer crap can kiss my arse. All in all, future homeowners, take note. By signing on the line, you already have given up your rights, and YES, HOA types are generally in full right to make your life hell, and charge you admission. Sign at your own risk.

Bye the way, you wouldn't believe some of the rules I've seen. No commerical vehicles is almost standard, so nobody in repair or construction is allowed to park unless in the garage or behind a fence... if at all. No RV's or boats, of course, then there's "no visible vehicle maintenance" except in a garage, no exterior parking for as short as 24 hours, besides the endless Architectural Control Committees that can control everything down to the exact species and locations that you can plant in your front yard as to be asthetically pleasing to your neighbors. Might as well hand them your rights in a sack along with the docs. "Please sign with your right hand, and extend your left for cuffs..."

Best reply yet. That sums it up, well said P :aok:

  5. but yea, soon as it is legal, im makin it loud, big ole coffe can tips. maybe even loosen up the alternator belt a lil so it squeals real loud when i start it too.

You obviously don't care the slightest about bringing more attention to yourself than you're already doing...disregard my last post ;)

  6. I would comply with what they're saying and not be an a$$ about it. If you can't deal with their rules, you need to find a new dwelling. I'm sure those rules and regs. were in place before you moved in, thus not giving you much of a leg to stand on. HOA's have dealt with issues like the one you're having many times before I'm sure and they know how to make it miserable for you.

Before anything else, I would get a copy of their Constitution (of whatever law-written piece of paper they have) and read it to a T. See exactly what's allowed and prohibited.

Know your enemy before you confront it :D

  7. I plan on starting with the comp test. Hopefully the motor is not screwed.....used 2001 Pathfinders with scrapped motors don't fetch much $$$.

You would be lucky to get too much of anything at this point, though, a running one would be better obviously. The market for these things has gone down substantially over the last year, with the exception of MAYBE the 04 Platinum Editions or the LE's. I say give it a patch job to get it idling properly and find yourself a wholesaler to pawn it off to. That may be your best bet for getting a decent amount of $$ for it.

"Resale value" for R50's in virtually non-existent.

  8. This question has been asked literally a hundred times already...search around a little bit

I think people register on this site to SPECIFICALLY ask the all important "I'm gonna lift my Pathy" and "I need bigger tires" questions, then never reply again.

  9. I had one of those "bumper guards" on my R50 before I sold it, a Westin actually. Had two KC Daylighters mounted on it too.

One wheeling trip and that thing was dented and mangled to bits on the underside. It was aluminum and not worth a sh!t as far as strength goes...

  10. Was browsing craigslist and came across this.....

MY TRUCK!! Looks like it ended up at auction and wound up on a slummy dealers lot, still with the balled General Grabbers, OME lift and Hidden Hitch. The question is...where the hell did the stock pathfinder roof rack go, along with the step rails (I had reinstalled the step rails when I sold it) Kind of looks like a stripped down XE now.

    Wow...a little bittersweet right now!!

What it USED to look like:

  11. Glad to see they're bringing back the "4DSC" Ad. Campaign from the early 90's era models.

It looks great, FAR better than previous. IMO the 2001.5-2003 Max's were some of the best looking ones (def. came with the best engine offered to that date too) This one brings me back that feeling again. I've always been a fan, and fell out of love with them in 2004 for ugly reasons. I can see myself easily falling for this one again!

And 290 h.p. to boot!! Looks like Nissan is getting back to making decent looking cars again.

    **EDIT**

What? No 6 speed? Come one now...!!
