OK, OK, OK,
So I have been reading all of the negative talk about the 05 and up Pathfinders, and well I am disappointed. I have a '05 Pathfinder SE 4x4 and it is a great vehicle. The 4.0 V6 has amazing power, great fuel economy for a SUV, I absolutely love the looks, and it performs excellent in the snow and ice. That is what it is used for primarily, to and from work in the snow, sleet, hail, bumper to bumper traffic, 105 plus heat, and everything in between.
If any of you have actually read the Peterson's article it is not nearly as bad as everyone here is making it sound. When the 05 first came out, it ranked 3rd out of 7 SUV's/ Trucks in the same 4x4 of the year competition in 2005. Same vehicle just different engine... against the following: Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma, Land Rover LR3, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, Jeep Liberty Diesel, and the Grand Cherokee. That was some pretty stout competition. I was very impressed and immediately went out and bought mine.
This years competition is even better, a H2 with the new 6.2 V8 and 6spd tranny, the H3 with the new 5.3 V8, Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel, All new Toyota Land Cruiser with the Tundras AWESOME 5.7, and the Jeep Liberty. IMO the Pathfinder held its own in a competition that was full of excellent off road vehicles.
Here is what the Pathfinder was praised on "Explosive power train, fun to drive on fire roads, a great family tow vehicle",
The acceleration times were the fastest times ever posted, the Pathfinder with its 310hp posted an explosive sub seven second 0-60 run of 6.75 sec, posting the fastest 0-60 time in the competitions history, over 4.6 seconds faster than the slowest competitor. The quarter mile time was also the fastest at 15.7 at 89 mph almost 3 seconds faster than the slowest competitor.
Where the Pathfinder does shine is on fast graded roads, where the V8 can really be opened up! On the sand dunes there was plenty of power available, it was the road biased package that limited the fun in the Pathfinder and hence, hindered this years run at the crown.
Just to recap, the FASTEST entry ever tested, great fit and finish, great sound quality from the factory system, good fuel economy, and second least expensive in the test. The universal complaint was "Where is the Off-road Package?" "I can only imagine how much better the Pathfinder would be with a rear locker". The V8 does not allow the Off Road package, only the V6 is available with the Off Road Package that adds Bilstein shocks, 32" BFG Rugged Trail T/A's, Hill Decent Control, Hill Start Assist, and numerous skid plates. This years entry was a SE V8, with 18" street tires.
This is what I ask of all of you, how would your Pathfinder sitting in your garage or driveway perform against any of these vehicles?
1987-1995 Pathfinders with a 153 hp V6, no airbags, no ABS, and largest avail tire a 31x10.50 ??? (by the way I own one of these as well)
1996-2000 Pathfinders with a 3.3 ltr 168 hp, a new, longer-wheelbase unibody chassis replaced the old body-on-frame design... ie car frame.
2001-2004 Pathfinders with a upgraded 3.5 V6 boasting 250 HP, but rack-and-pinion steering, McPherson struts in the front suspension and solid axle supported by coil springs in the back give the Pathfinder rather car-like ride, although this design may not be strong enough for heavy off-roading.
How would one of yours do... stock?
Not feeling so confident are you?
By the way, I love all Pathfinders! I am just sticking up for mine
Holy cow. Excellent write up, and good sticking up for your rig. However, the biggest argument you seem to be making is over power, over yours in the VQ40 (what is it at the crank...270?) and the competition. Who cares? A 60 h.p. Samurai is easily as capable as a 270 VQ40 powered Pathy, or almost 300 h.p. 5.3 V8 powered H3.
This debate is not over ergonomics, fuel economy (God knows, if you drive a Nissan 4x4 there is NO such word as "respectable" with regards to fuel economy), etc., it's over capability.
Each and every person who owns a different gen. Pathy will b!tch and moan over the fact that THEIR'S is the almighty (usually a WD owners argument) the R50 sucks and belongs on-road (again, usually from a WD owner) and the R51's a blinged-out joke.
Unless you're running Moab (Dean (R50) Alex (R50) ) you're run of the mill off road adventures are easily conquered in ANY chassis. It's like a chia-pet...dump money into it and watch it's possibilities grow. Articulation, banging your diffs., blah blah blah...it's all about the driver (Simon) Hell, I bet one could wheel a CRV provided it had AT's mounted and skids welded on:D
-
33's are considered small. Can you get 33's or larger under the R50?
max stryker had 35's on, IIRC, albeit extremely tightly and this virtually ruined all on-road abilities.

I plan on doing my plugs when I'm in there as well, as well as the PCV valve which is another cause for concern. I've got a tick under 96K on my stock plugs...they're about due for a change (105K)

I know you're not done yet, but this thread should really be pinned, or at least made a topic in the How To section.
GREAT walk-through here...thanks for all the info.!

Seems like every couple of years a car manufacturer tries something with multiple spark plugs again....was it the early z24's that had extra
plugs? Lol, but it ran like Hell!!
Yep. the HB 2.4's had 8...and the only people who will ever believe that are the people who have worked on them before!
Wasn't it the KA24?

Pathy owners are some of the best..
Some of? I thought we WERE the best???
Welcome!

Welcome! Pics pics!

It was a Parts Source, which is related to Canadian Tire stores.
Thanks Gianni, I will try that. If they do have a listing for they will not be able to order it in time for tomorrow though.
Can you believe they had no listing in their system for spark plugs? I got NGK platinums from NAPA at least.
Good deal, the NGK's will do you well. I would always ask on here what a part number is for the Pathy before going to a local parts store...seems unless it's FoMoCo, Mopar or GM they don't have a clue.
-
My local parts place says the Haynes doesn't make a manual for the pathfinder
Parts shops guys are idiots. Was it an Advance/Auto Zone? They probably didn't see one for the Pathfinder because the Manual is combined with 98-04 Pickups and 00-04 Xterra's, as well as 96-04 Pathy's, The part # for the Haynes Manual is 72031. Tell them to search that number for you.

I wouldnt leave it like that for long man, the exhaust heat is now directed right at the floor of the cargo area/back seat. I did that awhile back (cut off the resonator dealy like you did) and I started getting smoke coming up behind my rear seats.
I was thinking about that when I did it, and I ended up cutting the pipe RIGHT after the backside of the resonator, before the bend occurs for it to go up and over the axle (and such directing the exhaust upwards) and when I made the cut, I made about a 45 degree cut downwards to help a bit as well. Only ended up keeping it like that for about 6 months or so (and it sounded pretty good too) then I failed State Inspection in November...now I have some cheap new weld-on crap there that was enough to pass me.
The one thing I DID do differently...when I had the new rear section welded on, I had them bend the tailpipe so it doesn't stick straight out the back (as all 3.5's do) but a side exit instead (like the 3.3's) This way I can't snag it when coming off a high ledge, etc. as I did a million times wheeling before.
-
Both my cats leak horribly, and sound terrible when the engine's warmed and in D while sitting stationary with my foot on the brake (so the engine goes under a bit of load and drops the RPM's down) that's when it sounds worst. These stock exhausts SUCK!! Of course I've probably rattled and shaken mine to death over time with wheeling.
Hell, I sawz-alled my stock exhaust off on a run a few months ago from the resonator back...it was so rusted the tubing had completely snapped on it's own and the rear portion (that I ended up removing) was just dangling by the hangers.

DONE!

Man I still need to so this. Chris, you wanna take a trip to the Va. beach oceanfront and give me a hand? I got your gas if you do LOL!
Ahh yes, the PCV valve. This brings up another great point..that it too should be changed. Oil consumption in VQ's is caused by two things...power valve screws falling into the cylinder bank and scoring the walls or a clogged PCV valve, which can be easily changed while the valve cover is off for the P.V. job. Not enough emphasis is being put on this other job because it's easily overlooked, but equally important.
If only it weren't the holidays and I had some time on my hands...

now if someone will cut some vinyl that is the same font and size as the original decals, we can peel our .com and replace with .net
LOL I was just thinking the same thing!

No shame in driving an X...I wheel with some extremely capable SAS'ed X's that put most other rigs to shame really quickly.
You're gonna have a good time with it Alex.

Yes, I have been looking everywhere. I am still waiting for a response from that link.
That's the databases biggest downfall...it's always very slow getting a response from any one of the JY's that are part of it.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Christmas Canon Rock FTW!
Followed closely by Trans-Siberian Orchestra-O Come all ye Faithful/O Holy Night
HAVE to listen to these tunes with the volume at a ridiculously high level

They pulled the SAME crap with me when I had my 2002 SE-R...the EXACT SAME ISSUE! Difference being, I choked the original engine in that car when the screw fell into the cylinder and smashed #4 cylinder spark plug. THEN they replaced the engine, with 1K miles left on the powertrain warranty.
What the fcuk is it with power valves and the screws holding the valves in place anyways? I've about had it with shoddy Nissan craftsmanship, of late anyways.
Should have never gotten rid of my 97 D21 4x4 with the (slow) bulletproof Z24.

IIRC, those can be found on 1999.5-2001 LE's and 2002 SE's (dropped on the LE's)
Definately check out THIS site. There's lot's of center caps to be found there.

You're looking for these, right??
6 spokes.

Nice strap!!

Oh yeah, my SS recipients gift(s) were ordered today

Another gift came today! A $25 gift card to Target, SWEET!! thanks SS!
Looking forward to getting some good school supplies with it!!

I bet your damn motor will run fine with 75 octane found up in the mountains of colorado....
You're kidding, right? I'll remember your words of wisdom next time I fill up with crappy 87 octane and hear detonation while attempting to pass a truck on a steep uphill in New England.
VQ's require higher octane. Period. Want proof? Drive a VQ Pathy on 87 and then on 93. Proof's in the pudding, or in this case, the fuel. This argument has come up a million times on this board.
i think your butt dyno is gonna need a recalibration.... lol.LOL!

He's near impossible to get in touch with, as far as PM's go. I was going to buy some things from him myself, in response to a for sale ad WITH pictures of said items and he backed out of it; same thing, ignored PM's.
Everyone's busy FUELER, everyone's got obligations to meet. Maybe it's just me...but school, work and offroading doesn't exactly make for the most insanely-busy schedule, especially when (again) you've told someone you would sell them something and can't even have the decency to say "I've changed my mind". But that's an entirely different story. But if you enter some sort of transaction with someone, whether it's a banana or a bumper, you need to follow-up with it. Especially on the internet, pulling the "www hide behind the screen, I'll never meet that person" trick makes you look incredibly unreliable.
