Guess i forgot to mention it was the Mazda Protege5. Super fun to drive, especially with the manual shift option on the auto tranny. Its a little under powered (130hp)but the handling is super crisp and sporty. That coupled with the leather seats and new car smell is honestly making me kinda jealous. The pathy is feeling kinda old after sitting in the shiny like new interior of her car. Its funny because a Mazda was never even in the world of cars we were looking at (Nissan, Toyota, Honda), but it had great consumer reviews and its was seriously the nicest(newer) car we looked at in our price range. Its my understanding that is was the last to be an all japanese model as well, hopefully this will mean lots of carefree driving. The only thing I'm worried about is the low profile all season Dunlop 5000M tires. They don't look like they would be all that usefull in the snow. Oddly enough when I went to the tirerack web site to check out tires they have a protege5 wheelin in the snow as their header. The tires got Ok ratings for minor snow fall. This puts me into a major delima. For obvious reasons(pathy) I love snow, so do I pray for lots of it as usuall and feel guilty or hope for a mild winter and be bummed like last year. I'm going with guilt-I grew up going to catholic church-I can handle it.

not yet, i just got it all bolted in last night. I havent tried to adjust the TREs yet, but it seems like difference is within the range of adjustment.

So over the weekend we bought a new car for my wife, 2003 protege 5. I'll post pics later. This means that we now have an extra car for a few weeks. YAY i finally get to install the l&P centerlink Ive had since April. Good timing because yesterday was by far the coldest day we've had yet (40s F) Anyway aside from taking forever to drill out the pitman arm, everything went pretty smoothly. I got to the point of re attaching the the TREs and they need to be shortened, about a half inch on each side. I realize that they may need to be adjusted but shouldn't the old CL and the new CL be about the same length? It was a good stopping point anyway, and I plan to finish it tonight. I just wanted to make sure that this sounded right to you all.
thanks t

Lets hope the paint doesn't chip and it starts to rust... Other than that, it sounds like free $ for now! Tires and shocks will make it nicer and safer to drive, the exhaust will be mainly audible fix other than warped manifolds/broken studs which can shorten the life of the motor.
B
there are only a couple that might be a problem, but thanks for the heads up I'll keep an eye on the main offenders. Yes it is the broken stud issue and I really never though I'd have the money to fix it.

thanks
got em today, unfortunately they are b/o until next week.
thanks again

A couple weeks ago we had a pretty bad storm here in cental Ohio. I was fortunately out of town and didn't have to witness the carnage first hand. In fact until my neighbor told me to check the house and car I hadn't noticed anything at all. Well as soon as I got home I checked out the pathy and was shocked that I hadn't noticed all the little dents on the hood and roof for the two days I'd been home. Here the good part, when we bought our house the insurance company offered a house/auto policy with comprehensive on the cars for less then we had been paying for liability only.
I brought the pathy to the the adjuster on Saturday to see if the damage would be woth paying the deductible and HOLY CRAP- I'll be reciving a $1700 check in 3-5 business days! They adjuster made a point of telling me a few times that I did not have to spend the money on fixing the hail damage. OK... So now I'm trying to decide what to spend it on. I'm thinking new tires and shocks or maybe getting the exhaust fixed. Its like an early christmas. My wife is getting 1200 for her tercel which the dealer just offered us 1500 as a trade in. Definately gonna put that towards a new ride for her. Anyway, I've never been through a hail storm like this before-and really hope never to again. The house is next, aluminum siding + hail= a whole lota ugly. Wish me luck.

A few months ago I pulled my brake slide pins, cleaned them up and reinstalled. The squaking problem went away but it has returned :o . I'm thinking that I'll just get new ones because its kind of a pain to do all that work, just to have to do it again 3 months later. I know its possible to buy new ones and was just wondering if any knows any online source for them or if they are strickly a dealer type part?
Thanks

Saw a new wrangler limited yesterday. It was pretty geigh.
Looks like a limo, with no chance of being useful off road with out some serious mods. Still would love a CJ to play with though.

If the problem continues after brake line is fixed check out the post on slide pin maintenence. I had nearly identical symptoms and after i cleaned these up the noise stopped.

Thanks Guys and Girls, I thought that it was maybe due the way things are set up and the missing cat shield doesn't help. The fluids pretty new, I checked them during the trip and no funky smell or anyrthing so I'm not going to worry about it too much since other people are having the same experience.

I drove out to pennsylvania last weekend and noticed that the shifter shaft on the 4wd t-case got really hot. Is this normal? If not what to look for?
The temperature was in the 80's.
I have an aftermarket tranny cooler that bypasses the stock one.
Automatic Transmission
any help would be appreciated,
thanks

GIANT HOSE CLAMP! Seriously You have to replace them every six months or so but they are cheap and work great. I am currently using one to keep my muffler off of the frame cross bar.

Guy I work with got one, you cant see s*&t from the front seats, which is something i notice on alot of vehicles these days. other than that the styling is OK and the tires it came with are a joke. I did like the button that locks the rear diff and that all the electronics are run between the headliner and roof. It seems like it wants to be a bad ass but someone came in and decided to make it appealing to soccer moms too. :X

Whoa Filthy I thought my brakes looked like they were in rough shape.
B- everything fits fine and looks fine, it was just one of those things that made me wonder, It seemed like it affected the travel of the slide pin by just a little bit, of course I didn't notice this until they were off and mixed up as to what came from where. Just wanted to check with those in the know, every thing seems kosher so I'm not too worried.
Thanks for the response

I did the slide pin maintainance yesterday. It was definitely needed and I am hoping it cured the squeaky noise Ive been hearing. When I was putting the drivers side together I noticed that the rubber boots were different lengths. There was no mention of this in any of the write ups I've read, nor in my haynes manual. One had a 24 and the other a 28 on one end of the boot which I assume is the size. Anybody know which one goes where?
thanks

So I finally moved enough of the other projects we had going on in the garage so I could squeeze the pathy in there. The squeak is definitely coming from the passengers side seemingly toward the front so I jacked up the front and tried to move the wheel back and forth to see if there is any play in the hub. It didn't feel loose at all so I moved on to the brakes. My brakes seem to always be barely touching the rotor, but the brake pads look pretty good(20,000miles). The slide pin on the bottom moved around pretty good. The top one seemed kind of stiff. I pulled it out and it was dry and rusty. Unfortunately I was not really prepared to do this job. I cleaned it off with some wd-40 and a light brushing and cleaned out the hole the best I could. I didn't have any brake grease and the bastards at the auto store closed 10 min early. So I just cleaned every thing up and put it back together, I'll do it properly this weekend. Its definitely better and at least all that dry rust is out of the socket so that the pin can at least move.
Hopefully after I properly clean and lube the pins the squeak will go away. Thanks for all the input. Now I just need to find some time to zap the rust spots, install my L&P center link, and replace a CV boot, not to mention finish the bathroom remodel we started a few weeks ago.
Thanks again
next day...After thinking about it I think the brake bads were touching because i had my foot on the brake when I shut the car off.
I also had a really detailed dream about going to the auto store and looking for brake grease.

Cool, I'm glad that did the trick for now. Hopefully it will last a while... Keep watching it though !!
B
Thanks B, I'll definately keep an eye on it.
GG-I don't remember the commercial but with over 130,000 miles We've only put brakes, tires, timing belt and a waterpump into the tercel, the first three being regular maintanence. Not too bad. From what I gathered on a toyota forum it is caused by three speed tranny causing high temps and rpms leading too the seals breaking down.

It sucks that Zidane had to go out like that. I read this morning that Materazzi is known for being a real ****. But no matter what Zidane should have let it go and saw his team through to the end. It will always be a mystery if he stayed in if the outcome would have been different. I glad Italy won, but It would have been better if Zidane got to go to the penalty kicks.
oops I got edited the **** is a pejorative for a mans member

Its been about three weeks and the oil level has held steady and the car is performing the same as usuall. I'll called it fixed for now. I'll check back again in a month or so. I know true mechanics are offended by goop in a bottle but some times you have to say what the f%^k.

I read the write up on the slide pins so hopefully I'll be able to check that out tomorrow. If it was the slide pins would the noise go away once the brakes are depressed?
Do problematic ball joints squeak with forward/reverse motion or up/down motion like when you hit a bump? I was looking at them and can't figure out how they would cause a repetitive squeaking with just forward motion.
thanks for all the input so far, I'm motivated to fix things just need a little guidance sometimes.
L&P centerlink installed, question about the TREs
in The Garage
Posted · Edited by ticker
Damn! I got home and measured the two CLs and the stock one is 2 inches longer than the one I got from L&P. This seems like a pretty big difference. Unfortunately I beat the crap out of the old one to get it out so its not going back in, this means paths OOC until I get this resolved. Anybody have an opinion as to the size difference. I'm going to hold off on messing with the TREs until I have more information.
