SquadCarPathfinder
Im new around here and just been kinda lurking. And I've understood that the 300zx turbo from the 80s has pretty much the same setup as a pathy's engine but with a turbo. Just curious if anyone has converted a pathy into a turbo build by swapping the ECU, installing a ZX turbo manifold and running it just from the ZX ecu stock? What would be the pros and cons? I have just so many ideas just from theory. Edited February 19, 2017 by SquadCarPathfinder
Cuong Nguyen
There's less than a handful here but you can definitely find the threads. Not a lot of folks specialize with turbos but it's doable. Most of my turbo info and engine builds come from z31performance.com
Bunchie
Personally, I'm not sure if it would be worth all the effort, as a turbo is designed for continuous higher rpm speeds...whereas a Supercharger, like the one found in certain Xterras, will provide increased power all across the rpm range. If ur 4WDing, you need power at all different rpm's. I believe that the better value for your $$ would be to ensure ur electrics are the best you can get or upgrade to. Ive noticed that a lot of member's upgrades have included a higher output alternator(considering that myself). Hope this helps, cheers.
PathyAndTheJets
The exhaust system doesn't swap. At least not without cutting and refabbing part of the firewall. The 300zx ran the crossover over the trans and I doubt the manifolds would fit well enough to allow for a lot of leeway to re route the exhaust. Plus the first gen z31s didn't run intercoolers, so any intercooler piping is going to be a hassle, Not a whole lot of space for that either. The turbo engines also run less compression, so you might run into detonation issues there if you boost the stock pathfinder engine. Then you get 8lbs of peak boost from the z31 turbo. I think you can run like 12 lbs if you fiddle around with boost controllers. You gain about 30hp from stock, with a bunch of pipes all over so you can't get to anything. Not worth the work IMHO. adamzan
I think grafting an Xterra supercharger on would be easier, and you could get better power range out of it as well. The only thing I think that would be hard is adapting the belt.
