Modding My new R50

I just got a 1999.5 pathy and want to start modding it out. I have always been interested in off roading but this is my first time owning a 4x4. Right now it is all stock but it did just get Bridgestone Dueler ATs on it by the previous owner. I am thinking about gaurds and lifts. Any hints or suggestions? it only has about 47000 miles on it. Anything would be awesome as i am just getting it to it all.

Hi, I would go for a 2 inch lift, Warn Hubs, and put some decent tires on it like BF Goodrich AT's or MT's.

Poke around in these forums and you will be sure to find all the info you need.

Hey there!

Welcome to the board... good year pathy! :D

here's a good thread on lifts: http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=4990&st=0

you might want to check the other stickied threads in this section also.

Looks like you already have a ste of AT's so they should do you for a while...

Protection: check out www.blackpantherskidplates.com, He makes awesome skidplates for out trucks...

If you want sliders (heavy duty 'step rails' that wont bend like the stock ones) try www.4crawler.com, or Blackpanther has plans to make sliders for our trucks also...

We're pretty limited for other protection like bumpers... check the thread stickied in this forum for more info... and try searching this section -- you'll find a lot of info....

Good luck with your new pathy! Theyre great trucks!

How do you intend to use your Pathy? What I mean is, are your mods going to be primarily for appearance, for light off-roading, rock-crawling, mudding, deep back-country exploration? How you build up your truck depends highly on the type of off-roading you intend to do. That being said, a lift and skidplates are good starts.

For the lift, all you really need are new front and rear coil springs.

Here's the first 2" coil spring lift I put on my Pathfinder (This was done 2 years before AC's lift was available.)

You should know that there are side-effects of installing the lift. One side-effect is called "topping out" the strut. It can be a little disconcerting, since it makes a very lound thunk when the strut reaches maximum extension. Maximum extension is reached more frequently with the 2" lift than stock.

Another side-effect is that the front CV axles will be at more extreme angles, which could cause premature wear of the CV boots. Installation of Warn premium manual hubs (p/n 29091) addresses this issue.

Finally, of course, your center of gravity will be dffferent, so the truck will handle differently.

any tips for a newbie hitting the trail for the first time?

Read, read, read, then take baby steps as you familiarize yourself with your truck's capabilities. Look under the truck and get to know where its vital (and vulnerable) parts are.

Make sure your vehicle is well-prepared and well-maintained.

Don't go wheeling by yourself, especially while you're still a newb.

Get yourself some self-recovery equipment. A thick tow-strap and a pair of D-ring shackles are minimum requirements.

Learn when to use 4HI and 4LO.

Don't go through water too fast.

Don't spin the wheels if you've lost traction. You'll just dig yourself deeper. Pick a different driving line over the obstacle.

Also snoop around the region specific forums on here and at AC. It's more fun to go wheeling with another more-modded up R50 so you can really see the capabilities of your truck..... and how deep of a hole its gonna burn in your wallet.

  • 4 weeks later...

i'm sure that this has been covered TONS of times, but i found that this is the most recent thread that covers it somewhat.

i'm also interested in the warn hubs, and i've searched online for hubs for the r50's and found the cheapest one to be 129.99 USD. have you guys and gals found any that are cheaper? if so, where?
