glenn
Hello all. What size/capacity winch to you all suggest? Thanks --glenn
94extreme
the higher the better. 8k lbs at the very minimum. 9k or 9.5k you're doing better.
88pathoffroad
Ideally you should have a winch with a capacity at least two times the weight of your vehicle. My Pathy weighs around 4300-4400 lbs loaded if I remember right. Most of the time though, an 8000 lb winch will get you out of any stuck you're in. mws
Yeah, the generally repeated rule of thumb is double the vehicle weight as the one-size-fits-all recommendation. But if you want to think a little for yourself, think about what you will need it for. The biggest factor by far is mud. When you get stuck in mud, you need to pull the truck, all the mud stuck to the truck, AND overcome all the resistance caused by the body parts stuck in the mud. So then you want at LEAST 2x of the vehicle weight, 3X is even better for southeast US gumbo mud. But in dry sand, you won't need near as much. 1.5X of the vehicle weight will take care of 99% of what you encounter. vengeful
When I get a winch - probably sometime in July, it'll be a 10,000lb T-Max (probably get the Summit version for the virtue of cheaper cost and free shipping. )
mws
Mine should be arriving today. The first thing I'll be doing is ripping the package open to see where it was made... I'm so hoping it is still the original T-Max...
vengeful
Definitely let me know, as I'm very strongly considering it!
4wheeler
Ive got a 6k ramsey and to test it i buried my truck facing up a sand dune, parked my buddies on top and dead weight pulled it up the dune. If i need more ill just put a snatch block and have a 9k winch.
Filthy Luker
9K winch checking in here. Bare minimum for what we do here. We already snap winch lines and destroy the motors.
